This was such a long time ago, the world was different then no social media, no Nadal, Djokovic or Murray on the scene. Federer had just become World No.1 in February 2004, taking over from A. Rod! Hard to fathom that the World No.1 mantle for the next 18 years would be shared between the aforementioned tennis players, until the arrival of Daniil Medvedev to that summit in February 2022! 😵💫😵💫
Andy roddick just forget to use his forehand a year onwards and started whipping the ball in. I wonder which coach ruined his game like that, this version looks menacing.
That would be Dean Goldfine. Roddick's biggest mistake was getting rid of Brad Gilbert. Roddick thought changing his FH to add more spin & margin, would give him better consistency. Instead, he handicapped himself and lost the power in that wing to actually be offensive.
i think he had some trouble with his arm or shoulder or was worried about that possibility, and hitting big forehands and a big serve would add to the strain and so he prioritized his serve and moved to a loopier forehand with more spin and less power, playing the percentages. which helps most of the time, but not against the top top players where the margins are important and every little thing helps. thus why andy was a consistent top 10 player but could not win another major. rumor was his backhand improved under jimmy connors, but yeah brad gilbert was a good coach. just look at andre agassi's success. fed owned roddick. roddick wasn't going to beat fed with defense and moevement like early hewitt or nadal or djokovic, his movement wasn't good enough and his court positioning was sometimes worse because he ran around a lot of backhands, he would have to be the aggressor, win a slam with power like safin or del potro or wawrinka. unfortunately i think he lessened his chances by forfeiting a weapon.
@@mitchaelhollingsworth1698 fully agree on that I think it was 05 season when switched his forehand. Perhaps under Stefanki? He had an amazing attacking game during his early years. Trying to beat Federer basically took it away from him. Still a great player, should have stuck with Brad
From ‘01-‘07 Federer really took it to Roddick. They met about 16 times, 10 of them finals. Roger won every one of those finals and lost only one match to Andy. The ATP Masters was where Andy was able to win all three of the matches he beat Fed. Fed beat him 21 times before Andy retired. Nadal and Joker were more generous to Andy. Andy retired with a winning h2h to Novak, 5:4.
2009's final was great, but I still think that before the rain delay in this match, it was the best tennis that Roddick put together against Federer. Such a confident game. Great shotmaking and just relentless, early attacking, even off of his backhand.
I always remember Federer started of this match with no wristbands on his right wrist for some reason. I’ve never seen him do this before or after. He quickly put it on after he was broken near the start the match lol
Une des 10 plus belles finales de Wimbledon pour moi. On oublie le niveau de ces 2 joueurs (avant big 4) de cette époque. Whoever told Roddick to change his forehand , is a clown. His forehand went from a fast penetrating shot with just enough top spin to a loopy slow shot with no penetration. Will never understand why he changed his forehand this much.
Roddick did go on to reach multiple slams after he and Brad parted ways, and he arguably played his best tennis in the '09 Wimbledon Final, when Larry Stefanki was his coach, so I don't think Brad was the missing piece to the puzzle.
