Yeah, i built a sea kayak the same way, only i used cedar strips instead of polyurethane foam. Its amazing how much stiffness comes from the fiberglass on both sides. If i could manage all that... then, well pretty sure building a surfboad cant be that hard.
There are more than a few who do this in Australia alone. I'm sure the numbers woukd get way bigger if you add places like Hawaii and the US West Coast.
I used to do fiberglass professionally and I can tell you that fiberglass and resin are not waterproof. It is the gel coat on top that make the fiberglass waterproof. Water will slowly osmose through the resin and fiberglass and collect in the foam core. He should do his first coat of resin and fiberglass and then gel coat it. Then, abrade that surface and put his decorative resins on for appearance.
There’s many making boards, very few make anything I’d ride, wouldn’t call myself a shaper & ive been making decks since the 70’s that I ride on the big island
PU foam is closed cell. It cannot absorb water. However water can caused the glass fibre to delaminate. Continuous adhesion is important but not for the reasons given.
My brother was a shaper before he bought and now runs the fiberglass supply company he was buying materials from. Almost all boards in the US were made in here in the US, until Clark Foam shut down. After Clark Foam closed foam blanks mostly came from Mexico or China. When that happened the Chinese also started building finished boards and now it is a mixed market. Chinese boards are often cnc shaped, while the glass is still hand applied as it is something that is still to difficult for a machine to do.
I started making my own since I was 14yrs old as I didn't have a lot of money , been doing it ever since, the satisfaction of riding a board you made your self is just bliss.
Very few people in the world. Ha, ha, ha, biggest joke ever. Many of hand shapers out there and amateurs/hobbyist like myself. Trying to impress for the clip.
The last pour is called a hot coat. There's nothing like designing and shaping your own board and then taking it out into the water and catching your first wave with it and realizing that it f****** shreds. I assure you that any surfer can learn this and learn it pretty quickly.
I worked for a Paul a Brazilian fellow , really cool dude he teached me the basic of glaasin boards and repairs, I was the broom dude in his shop for a few days!!! 👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘🙏🙏🙏
Every kid in 1960’s LA and orange County made surfboards. This guy makes really good ones and listens to surfers who actually know how the boards but a real east coast pioneer was Hanson Cardiff whose work was every bit as good as this guys.
I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney( Bondi) and new at lease 3 guy who were shaping boards. There were hundreds of Shapers and Glasser down the East cost of Australia
It's a Fine Art/Trade/Craft.Plenty Old Guys here in Hawaii doing it. IAm one of them. Aloha Kako from FreeFlite Handfoils and NoKaO'i Kickboards Upcycled from the broken surfboards of the NorthShore of Oahu
This is the traditional way! Surfing is a pretty modern sport and fibreglass over styrofoam has been standard for decades. This video is full of rubbish. LOTS of people hand shape surfboards. Not sure if the construction of surf boards has much negative environmental impact. Especially compared to the number of used blades from wind turbines which are also made of fibreglass.
been wondering this for a while. after all this to make it smooth we go and make the bottom look like pebbles with wax.... so why? why not leave it rough?
What about the shapes? Are those just a variety of know and proven to be working? Hard to imagine that those small shops do something like a research/test on shapes from some scientific hydrodynamic perspective.
I do this when I was 14 back in the 60s then the following year I give that surfboard away to some kid that didn’t have one . after I made one that I like mo betta an give to another kook later as before to plant the stoke
Why do so many people pretend to be/do the same as (or better than) the person in the video? The same accounts who apparently hand-make surfboards are also everything from dermatologists to archeologists. And they all have pet crows.
Custom boards should always be hand shaped. The prices I charge for a custom craft deserves everything I can throw at it. The energy and love you spend with the board translates very well to the experience and joy the person on the wave deserves. 3E
@@1BigDaDo sure, it might resemble a surfboard. But there is a lot more to it than that. Sure, anyone can put a frozen pizza in an over and slice it into pieces with little training and an oven. But then you have a wood fired pizza oven that need just the right rough and conditioning, proper ingredients and a skill that has been carefully fostered over a lifetime, to be perfect at it and make the customers product come to life.. the choice is always yours. 3E
This is how hundreds of thousands of people build a basic surfboard, dont be fooled by some AI voice saying hes one of the few in the world lmao
Right!? I got 3 different friends that all shape their own boards. Half the people surfing in my home town ride their shapes haha
Hundreds of thousands out of 8 billion is still only a few
So if you think about it from that perspective they are kinda right

@@darthrevan8640uhhh... on a galactic scale, Timbuktu is really that close.
There are more than a few who do this in Australia alone. I'm sure the numbers woukd get way bigger if you add places like Hawaii and the US West Coast.
Lots of people do this by hand. Hard to charge enough for all this work.
Wow my friends and i are elite? Didn't realize there were so few people making boards, seems like more and more everyday

He’s not one of few, there is a garage shaper in every neighborhood in southern california
I live in NJ and there are people here who are garage shapers as well if people surf in the area there’s one guy trying to make surfboards as a hobby
Not very few people anymore. There are many shapers in the world rn, amazing artists 😊
Dude I was about to say this…
There’s many making boards, very few make anything I’d ride, wouldn’t call myself a shaper & ive been making decks since the 70’s that I ride on the big island

True craftsman. Patient individual. I want a custom board.
There are many many many shapers in the world doing this exact method.
My Uncle Clyde used to make customized surfboards by hand; beautiful work. I miss him...
Dead by fiberglass inhalation.
Pretty neat. Some serious skill going on there.
You're a surfboard artist. Awesome job.
I started making my own since I was 14yrs old as I didn't have a lot of money , been doing it ever since, the satisfaction of riding a board you made your self is just bliss.
Your facts are soooo out😂 there’s plenty of board maker’s out there 😉
Let's get it straight, that's pure moving art.
This is cool, never thought about a surfboard as a fibre composite sandwich but that's exactly what it is!
Very few people in the world. Ha, ha, ha, biggest joke ever. Many of hand shapers out there and amateurs/hobbyist like myself. Trying to impress for the clip.
I would love to learn this
Wow, just beautiful.
Wow, I'm special and so are my friends because we have been building boards this way for years!
The last pour is called a hot coat. There's nothing like designing and shaping your own board and then taking it out into the water and catching your first wave with it and realizing that it f****** shreds.

An artist at work. It’s very interesting to watch. Peace
Hell I made my first longboard when I was 13😂😂😂 remember kids always wear a respirator when sanding fiberglass
All my boards were hand shaped !
Being in the shaping room when the shaper was making my boards was hella part of my ying n yang
Beautiful
Amazing skill, WOW

Old school 👍 in Peru we still making the surfboards this way👌
"One of the few"? 😂😂😂
"Helps" to give it buoyancy.
☝🤓🎶😂

Bruh this is damn near how every board is made
The internet is rubbing the fact that i cant surf in my face...
I am one of few?! Awesome! 😂
And he does it in awesome overalls 😎
Nice to know we still have skilled crafts persons in this country. And that it is not made in China.
Insider’s ESG rating will go down because this is clearly not net zero 😂
30 hours? I guess they're counting the dry time in that.
That stuff will make your lungs shine .
Art ❤
Ahhhh. FS19 music. Very relaxing
I made a decent paddle board with 4x8 foam insulation and plywood.
Would love to see a sustainable way this is done or even a more older traditional board making

I made one in high school in 83
When you quit in middle school and have 20 years experience when you're 32
Many people do this all over the world
Surfing sound fun, but I’m afraid of falling into the water. I mostly worried about touch a fish. 😅
This reminds me of the lords of dogtown movie.
I was always curious how they were made! This is beautiful!!
Paul, like other surfboard maker, also uses wood to stiffen and strengthen the board…
I used to make my own boards back in the 90s. 😊 rewarding but not a pleasant process 😁
This is literally how nearly all surfboard are made lol.
Here in Cape Town, we have loads of board makers who make custom boards. 😅😅😅
That's how we all did it back in the day. Today most surfboards are popped out of molds and pressure glassed in China.
1 of only a few in the world ? Our entire east coast here in Australia is filled with shapers
Schmidt stix😮
been wondering this for a while. after all this to make it smooth we go and make the bottom look like pebbles with wax.... so why? why not leave it rough?
Many people build their own surfboards this guys just the only one to make any money off it 😂
Lol one of the few in the world 😂
I made a paddle board in a similar way, it was fun, just not as compact as the ones you can buy.
Ich will nicht wissen was Opa dann zu Vegetariern sagen würde 😂
What about the shapes? Are those just a variety of know and proven to be working? Hard to imagine that those small shops do something like a research/test on shapes from some scientific hydrodynamic perspective.
One of few. Bollocks!!! 10’s of thousands Hand made per annum.
If it ain't wood, it ain't good!!!
That's the most VIVID clear resin I've ever seen. Beautiful work
I know a bunch of shapers. I guess I know all of them since they are so rare.
Almost every board built this way
Forgot to mention I did that for about 10 years. Hope somebody gotta waves on that junk
I mean, how else would you make them other than by hand?
I can smell the Horizon west surf shop
With Nathan Pratt on main street Santa Monica Ca 1980
Bruh there’s so many people who hand shape surf boards
One of how many? in the world? There's at least 5 shops that hand build custom surf boards in my area alone.
This video has me questioning the validity of all the other videos Insider has made about the “last few remaining artisans”
Plenty of hand shapers mate
Yes skilled labor, but also a whole shop of equipment. There are plenty of others who could do this if they had the access to the tools
I do this when I was 14 back in the 60s then the following year I give that surfboard away to some kid that didn’t have one .
after I made one that I like mo betta an give to another kook later as before to plant the stoke
That’s a lot of wasted resin lmao
So these are the boards I see people breaking constantly 😂 no wonder, theyre made of styrofoam lmao
Sharkproof as well? 😂
What? Did all the shapers die, while I wasn't looking?
There are not only a few people making handmade boards in the world… It’s a cool process, but it’s not unique to a few people in the world.
Como me encantaría aprender hacer mi propia tabla de surf
pour 3 tons on, while collecting 2 tons dripping off
The foam "helps to give it its buoyancy"??? It doesn't help, it IS its buoyancy
Why do so many people pretend to be/do the same as (or better than) the person in the video? The same accounts who apparently hand-make surfboards are also everything from dermatologists to archeologists. And they all have pet crows.
Having done fiberglass work making boats/boat parts... making surfboards is like not that impressive
Resin. Number 1 in environment pollution.
Can never get me to work around fiberglass, resin, and or sanding that crap again..
Where’s the half of inch of whaax
Oh so that’s how the elite few do it😂
Custom boards should always be hand shaped. The prices I charge for a custom craft deserves everything I can throw at it. The energy and love you spend with the board translates very well to the experience and joy the person on the wave deserves. 3E
Its cutting Styrofoam and putting fiberglass on and sanded... any1 csn do this with little training and a few tools...
@@1BigDaDo sure, it might resemble a surfboard. But there is a lot more to it than that. Sure, anyone can put a frozen pizza in an over and slice it into pieces with little training and an oven. “One of very few people who makes surfboards by hand” I know 5 and none are Paul
I literally made my board in some dudes garage lol
What ???? Few ppl in the word!!!???
What do they cost
Depending on the size, shape, and shaper, they vary from 200 to 1500 USD
B. U. T. Full ❤
I literally made two surfboards for myself by hand haha, who knowingly misled this reporter
