Sharing in case it may help you or someone else… I’ve battled my weight the last thirty years and have spent many of them trying to out exercise my weight/diet. Late June 2023 I made an abrupt diet change; ultra low carb, gluten free, intermittent fasting. I weighed 353 then. A month ago I weighed in at 247. I was able to do this while dealing with a torn meniscus in my knee and complications from surgery for it. Bottom line I cut out all sugar, bread, pasta and rice. I don’t eat food with long labels. I eat baked chicken, fish, broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, salad, blueberries mixed with plain almonds. I eat two meals, one at noon and one between 5-6 PM. 18 hour fast, but you could probably expand the window for eating a bit. All my life I heard diet is 70% of being fit. For me it’s more than that. Lost 100 pounds while I could hardly walk at all from November to May. One more key part has been black coffee which I hated prior. I learned to like it and drink a big cup at 7:30 AM and again after supper to help fill me up. Okay that’s all. Maybe this will help somebody. Low Carb, Gluten Free, Intermittent Fasting! It works!
This is so refreshing to hear. It really can be done without injections or surgery, if you are willing to put in the time and effort. I applaud you!! Congratulations! I wish you good health and continued success!
I try to keep total carbs at 30 grams or less, preferably 20 or less. As I reach a weight I want to maintain I plan to add in a few healthy carbs such as sweet potato and maybe carrots a few times a week.
You have the best mind set! I love your attitude. One pointer: when you reach your full extention on weights, slowly count to four on the return to start. The resistance will help build your muscles.
I like strength training too - it's really motivating for me when I'm able to increase the weight I'm lifting. I just read a really motivational book - Walking with Peety. It's the story about an unhealthy man who changes his life thanks to a plant based diet and adopting a dog. So good!
These are all great ideas to train! 👍🏻 The “just in case” reason for the parking garage at the hospital made me giggle but it really isn’t a bad idea to train there!! You are doing fantastic! The thinking outside the box shows that you have a good mindset for the changes you are making! Lots of positive vibes being sent to you from Texas!! ❤
You're amazing! I admire your spirit and humor. I used to walk in the cemetery because it was so peaceful, and if I keeled over they wouldn't have to drag me far!
A coworker of mine use to walk the steps in the casinos parking garage & hotel/casino. They are likely safer than a hospital. At least ours. So many cameras in the casinos!
Eye of the tiger Peaks! Your tenacity is inspiring. We're gettin' a taste of Georgia in Maine; heat indeces of 105 tomorrow! 🥵 Keep up the incredible work Laura. 👏 ✌️
Kudos to you on that heel click at the end. 🎉 You mentioned that you might get a personal trainer. I think that would be a great idea. Besides giving you excellent advice on what types of exercises would benefit you, they also will make sure that you are using the machines correctly. I remember being at the gym once and on a machine. A trainer walked by giving a prospective client a tour. He looked at me, paused his tour, and came over and showed me something that I was doing incorrectly. 😍
It's been insanely hot here. 🥵 But this morning it cooled waaaaayyy down. So I thought what would Peaks do? She would go hike! So that's what me and the dog are gonna do! Thank you for the inspiration!
Great job sticking with it and prioritizing health! Something I'm curious about is the heart rate range during your cardio. To become super efficient and use fat as your primary fuel source, it's critical to be fully aerobic, 60-70% of your max HR. Anything above and you'll be using sugars/glycogen for energy and that's probably not what you want for optimal metabolic health. So, you can slow down and decrease your intensity until your fitness level improves along with metabolic efficiency. Best regards!
@@peaks4pounds, that's awesome to hear! Such a public sharing of your health journey is inspiring to so many! I don't know how old you are buy my guess is that HR is still much too high for efficient fat utilization and metabolic health. I know it's hard to slow down because it feels like "we're not working hard enough", buy you are. I'm happy to help further, if you ever want to chat.
Wow, you are a machine! You are so right about strength training! It is so important to build up those muscles as you're on your Blue Blaze to Health! Be careful! Stay hydrated with some electrolytes! I was out for a backpacking trip earlier this week. Extreme heatwave with some Savannah style humidity...ugh...just exhausting and gross 🥵 my friend got a bit of heat illness. It can be very dangerous.
I definitely recommend getting a personal trainer one that will give you a program to follow . That’s how I learned to lift weights . It’s so important to everything else you do !!! Keep going you are doing great !!! Very inspiring
You’re doing great. As someone who trains- form on machines is important and slow down through the exercise. Calf raises, stretch all the way down. Slow and steady. You got this!💪🏻
Excellent! You should train for a while without that pack just to take that extra weight off of your knees. I’m rehabbing a torn meniscus right now and it is no fun. However, I’m finally pain-free after months, but I remember it used to hurt more when I would, carry heavy groceries up the stairs. Glad to see you back!
Walking the stairs at the hospital just in case. Brilliant! I'm going to copy that. You're such an inspiration and I'm honored you are taking us along on your journey ❤
GO YOU!! Keep up the good work!!! But don't lock your knees out on the leg press. You want to strengthen your knees, not kill them LOL!! Also try to throw in some single leg exercises when you feel up to it since walking, hiking, and running is a one legged exercise. And, believe it or not, hip strength directly strengthens your knees. I'm 65 and had a knee issue recently and it killed my running for a few weeks. I think a coach is an awesome idea. Proud of you for the way you don't let anything get you down! You're going to get this!!
Love Savannah but it was hot and humid. I always try to take the stairs and park at the back of the lot. I am waiting for knee surgery so maybe I can catch up with you when you thru-hike the AT again. Hospital parking ramps and stairs is smart except for car exhaust. I’m sure you are out there early. You are an exceptional human and could help others.
One thing you might want to consider adding, which I've found is hugely helpful, is balance training. This can be as simple as standing on one foot or as complex as standing on a balance disk (I have a $18 Dyna-Disc knock-off found on Amazon) with your eyes closed -- there's a lot of variations in between. Barefoot training also has totally changed not only how I hike but how my body functions in general and has made my balance many, many times better than it ever was even when I was young (I won't say how old, but I'm older than you, Laura 😂)
What a beautiful place to hike. I love the low country. Well, another great video that inspires and motivates so many people, including myself. Keep up the great work! Have a wonderful day.
Sounds like what I do. Now that school is out, i can do more. But man, strength training is the best. Yoga and Pilates were also game changers. Keep it up.

I live on Hilton Head so I know what you mean about the humidity! The heat & humidity are brutal this time of year! You’re doing great with your training! I used to run up & down 4 flights of stairs in my apartment building many years ago. I couldn’t do it now if I had to so good for you that you are going up & down 5 flights of stairs!
You are sticking to it and ditto on discovery of downhill toning is just as important especially at higher elevations, you are an inspiration, keep up the great work.👏💪

You're good!! I like what you do 👍Out of curiosity, do you have all your time for training, or you work also?
Thank you! I am pretty much retired from a regular work schedule. I am blessed with the opportunity to go on adventures, train and make videos to share with like-minded folks. 🥾💙🙏
A personal trainer, even just for a few sessions will help you to be more efficient with your workouts.
Very true!

That's what I hear!
