I bought a 650 Int. because I wanted a bike that looked like the bikes I admired in High School. Modern bikes all look like discarded props from a B movie Sci-Fi flick.

I’m 20 and when I got my a2 licence I I bought a Kawasaki w800 (yes I know not an interceptor, I just like the look that little bit more), I bought it because the style of classic inspired bikes just have a timeless look to me which makes me feel like every time i go on a ride, I’m going on it for a fun relaxing experience, many of my friends have questioned me why I didn’t choose a super duper sport bike and bought a “grandads bike” I’m just not into high performance or treating the roads like a race track, I just want to enjoy them, (one thing I’ll note is that a lot more people come up to me talk about my bike than people with modern styled ones)

100% agree. I am nearly 30 and have wanted my bike licence since I was 16 but was never fully wrapped with the sports bikes on offer and was leaning towards an adventure tourer but was never sure. Since the interceptor came out I have been reading every article I can on it and have fallen in love. Glad to say I am obsessed and have organised to get my licence by the end of the year. This looks like a bike should, it's timeless and beautiful but with modern reliability

I appreciated the small size and light weight of the 80cc 2-stroke Yamaha that I learned on because I wasn't afraid
to drop it while practicing low speed figure 8's. I also didn't take it on the highway, so I didn't need more power.
    For the same conditions today, I'd recommend a single-cylinder 125cc 4-stroke for a starter.

I think there’s a trend amongst us mortals, housing, cars, motorbikes, start off small, get bigger and bigger, then end up going full circle. I also liken the 650cc range of bikes, which in my opinion is ample for real world riding, to going to the pub or a party and being questioned by everyone why you’re not having a drink. “What’s wrong with you?”. I owned a T120 up until a couple of years ago and loved the bike, but I couldn’t use all of the power that it had, and it’s not even that fast compared to a lot of bikes. Maybe it’s an age thing, as we get older we think of the consequences of hitting the throttle.

I’d been riding a 1979 Vespa P200E for 25 years and I’d been looking to add a motorcycle to my garage. I knew I wanted something in the “vintage” department, definitely not a “praying mantis from space.” I looked at purchasing an early-mid seventies CB or R65. Then the Interceptor arrived in the States and I found this channel. I spent a lot of time reading about this bike and watching reviews and such. Then I came across a 2019 Orange Crush Interceptor with only 1100 miles on it for sale a little less than a year ago and I pounced. After 25 years on the Vespa, the Interceptor seemed huge. But it didn’t take long to feel comfortable and confident. This is not only my first motorcycle, it will be my only motorcycle. Every mile on this machine has been an absolute blast.

Being a millennial, and an owner of the Bullet Classic 350, which is my first bike that I chose among a plethora of modern gizmos, I think what attracts us (the younger folks) towards retro or modern classics is that these motorcycle brands have a lineage attached to them, and their models hark back to historic times that we've never experienced first hand, but can get a taste of what it would've been like back in the day through these machines!
That said, the mechanical simplicity and analogue reliability attracts equally just as much as the nostalgic quotient.

Loved your "praying mantis from space" commentary. My first ride on a bike was as a pillion on my brothers Triumph Tiger 650 in 1969. Maybe that is why I was compelled to purchase my 2021 Int 650 last December. I think another market the Interceptor is filling, is geezers like me returning to motorcycling. Sold my HD 3 years prior and the itch to ride again had to be satisfied. The Interceptor scratched that itch perfectly.

Wow, you just said everything that I went through on my mind when I first chose this bike. This is my first bike and If you saw mine I bet you would be experiencing deja vu since my orange crush has got a lot of upgrades based upon your recommendations right down to the TripMachine Leather handlebar straps. For me this was a conscientious decision about budget, performance, material impact on the world and picturing me in 20 years (im 35 btw) riding the same bike and feeling as good as the day I got it. Everywhere I go people turn around. I bet they like it because they recognize it as a sign of simpler, better times when people cared about being happy and not about being relevant. Older folks ask me "Is it really THE Interceptor" and I tell them that it is in fact the Interceptor's grandson. You can be parked right beside a panigale and people will always ask about the Interceptor first and on the road I don't need get on the speed race since I already won on the stylish confidence one. Read a bit about Dieter Rams' 10 rules for a good design and you will learn how to choose good timeless products.

Personal Story: I've probably said this here before, so forgive me if I'm repeating myself. When I was convinced by my partner (now wife) to move out of big, bad New York City to the slightly more-bucolic lands of the Jersey Shore, one of my concerns surrounded personal transportation: On the mean streets of Gotham, I managed to get around with one of several bicycles, with the occasional trip via public transportation to pinch-hit in seriously inclement weather. Now, out in semi-suburban territory, I needed my own wheels, but for several reasons (too long to get into here…PTSD on account of a horrific accident from decades back) ruled out getting a car, so I rekindled a long-deferred dream of getting my MC license and buying a relatively mild-mannered motorcycle, like a Suzuki SV650. Wife-to-be said, somewhat predictably, "You had me at 'motorcycle'…" We discussed things over a few weeks, and it was decided that i would get a scooter, but with one proviso: it *had* to be highway-capable-and-legal. I zeroed-in on a Vespa GTS 300, and never looked back. I've had this bike up to 85mph on the crazy superslabs here, which has been both invigorating (to me) and totally baffling (to other motorists observing me). I *would* say you wouldn't want to do this on anything much smaller, but you absolutely *don't* need a liter bike to do this sort of thing, and I wish people would stop pushing that sort of nonsense around. Ideally, you might want something around 500-650cc, with roughly 45-55hp motivating you. (Who was it who said "25 horsepower is all anyone needs…the rest is just wheelspin?")
65mph on two wheels feels *way* faster than 65mph in a cage. Since I use my bike to actually get to places for important stuff, and not just for fun (though I do that, too, as much as I can), it's mostly about moving *swiftly*, not crazy-fast, which is he feeling I get from watching your videos, BTW.
And, were I in the market for a bigger ride, RE's 650 would fit the bill rather nicely.
(And: watches and motos…yes, totally grok you there, of course.)
Thanks (yet again) for for being a voice of relative sanity in this realm of wretched excess we find ourselves mired in.

Dear Barrett, I’ve ridden a 1968 Vespa Rally 180 for 17 years in Lisbon, and easily ventured in a 30 km radius around my town. Never needed more. I’ve moved to France since, had to sell it, and bought an Interceptor instead of a Vespa GTS which I considered. I couldn’t be happier. It’s laidback, packs all the punch I need for longer hauls (ridden often for 200km +), amazing for weekend tours exploring my area, reliable and it encourages a hands on approach for tuning, modding which has been a lot of fun and great learning experience. It’s not too precious like a beemer or a Triumph, parts come cheaper and I’m on a steady journey from a mechanical noob to someone who can service his own bike with no problems. I’d strongly recommend it. Happy trails and ride safe!

On a related note, one of the most frightening experiences I've had on a vehicle was simply riding in normal traffic on a 63 Lambretta Scooter going roughly 35 miles per hour. It was harrowing.
For whatever reason, riding this particular vintage scooter at a relatively low speed (although it didn't help that someone was kissing my rear - without consent) felt akin to watching a war movie in which a damaged submarine dives much deeper than it was designed to go.

Several years ago, I decided to return to motorcycling after a break of thirty-odd years. Unfortunately, the bike I chose to buy was a Yamaha MT09.
The reason for this choice, was that it had an upright riding position and the seat did not have the ridiculous 'kicked-up' pillion section of seat.
I had looked at Triumphs, but they were bloody expensive in comparison.
I say unfortunately, because I found it to be uncomfortable for my ageing frame, and the slow-speed power delivery was extremely snatchy.
I reckon that I put only a couple of hundred miles on the thing, before parking it under a cover. About six months passed, and I couldn't muster the enthusiasm to ride. So, I sold it back to the dealer.
I just wish the Interceptor had been available at the time!

Hi Stu, it's the French guy again. :D I got my A2 license last week and immediately had a test ride on an interceptor. I think it's a great bike for a beginner. I felt like I was familiar with it in less than 5 minutes. The gearbox, the clutch, the throttle, everything was super smooth and it looks and sounds amazing. It was really easy to ride and I almost bought it brand new on the spot. It's way better than the MT07 they had for the riding lessons (I hated it).
I ended up doing a more "reasonable" thing, though. I bought a second hand 2019 classic 500 desert storm, equipped with RE panniers and sissy bar, for 4400€. I think I got a great deal as it only had 4800km on it. Insurance is cheaper too.
We picked it up in Marseille, rode all the way to Perpignan and then back to Nice in three days (around 1000km). I think it's a good beginner bike too. It's very comfortable and has no problem carrying myself, a pillion and luggage. The power is very manageable and I'm not tempted to ride fast, which is probably good for a beginner. We have to actively try to avoid 110km/h roads though and had a scary moment when it was raining and the rear wheel slipped in an express way exit ramp. I feel like the stock tires are not good enough for wet roads...
Anyway, I don't know how long I will keep it, but it seems really good to commute on small roads and go for slow paced rides on weekends.
Thanks again for all your videos!

Nostalgia plays into this choice as my very first bike was a used 1973 Honda cb360, which I loved, and this bike looks almost exactly the same. They are just as you said a modern classic. Now the Triumph is a nice looking retro bike but put it next to the Interceptor and it just doesn't cut it, I owned a Triumph T100 before this and never experienced the same level of interest as the Enfield, I believe that the styling is timeless.

"But you'll get bored?" Haven't been so far, and not likely to happen soon! If I can help it, and maintain her well enough, the Bullet'll be the bike i'm riding in 40 years, should we still have fuel to power it! 😁 I think part of the alure of motorcycling for younger people like myself is a means of escape that isn't just an alternate form of screen, but actually real and present in the world, seeing what we have here, and going places you never would've dreamed of sitting at home watching Netflix, or what have you. To me, it's always a good day if I can get away on the Bullet for an hour or two. Great video, and agree with all the points!

A very interesting video and you have definitely described the situation. As a millennial and a young rider, I considered the Interceptor 650 as first bike, but my choice went on the Classic 500 (a rather difficult bike to begin, but so good to ride)
Modern classic bikes are definitely a trend, but I am deeply convinced that some people, like me, are more interested in a bike that you can ride safely, equipped with just what you need, easy for maintenance, fuel effective, and especially with a very original design (for the Classic 500/Classic 350, maybe others) that no other motorcycle manufacturers manage to do. Some riders will get bored of their Royal Enfield, but some will continue riding their modern Classic bikes for thousands and thousands of miles

As for the RE INT650, this motorcycle will take you anywhere comfortably and has so much potential for customization and making it your own.

I've long felt that 650s are a real sweet spot among bikes. My first bike was an 83 Suzuki GS650 that didn't run... a friend thought it'd be good for me to learn how to take apart and fix the bike I'm going to ride.
While I don't think that's necessary, I don't disagree and it certainly helped guide me. I've since repaired and restored many bikes. The same friend also believes roads would be safer if people needed to pass a motorcycle safety course as a prerequisite to getting a driver's license. I don't disagree with this, either. I went for breakfast to a well known biker cafe the other week. It was a pleasant day and there were probably around 40 bikes in the car park. My eyes were subconciously immediately drawn to the lone RE Interceptor's front end that slightly jutted out from amongst the rest. I didn't give it much thought at the time but now having watched your video it all becomes clear. :-) And what was I riding? A Kawasaki Z900RS for which in practical terms compared to the Interceptor I have paid roughly £5,000 more than I needed to for performance I can't use (legally) on the road. Am I peed off? Logically I should be but, no not at all. In my eyes the Z;s looks are drop dead gourgeous. Yet another example of the fact that motorcycling is so much an emotiional thing.

I'd taken lesson got my learner's, and ordered the RE Interceptor. I ordered it because of the price and reviews. Most importantly, it is one of the most powerful "Restricted" bikes (RE) allowed for new riders in my country (Australia).
It's a really fun bike to ride. Not so powerful that I can accidentally wheelie, not so sluggish that I can't commute on motorways. It's forgiving when you are in the wrong gear. It's got a great clutch, and all the EFI and ABS you could want. What's more it's easy to maintain.
The two things I would like: indicator with the gear I'm in and gauges that don't fog up.
Also, I had to swap the headlight for LED so that I could see at night. Touring seat made it more comfortable too.

The lack of gear indicator is a bit annoying (as much as people say you don't need one, I still think it'd be nice) and the gauge fogging is really annoying. I got my gauges replaced under warranty no questions asked. And I'd recommend doing the same before pulling them apart and losing the ability to make a warranty claim on them. The replacements still fog a tiny bit under worst conditions, but nowhere near like my old ones which used to get hard to read at times. The issue is that they were factory sealed in an environment with too much humidity, so the moisture in the air condenses in then right conditions. It's not to do with them leaking or whatever people say.

You nailed nearly every point that runs through my mind owning an RE Interceptor... particularly in regards to outgrowing this bike or only thinking of it as a beginner option. With more than forty years riding and owning, I have had an eclectic mix over the years. Several of my past bikes were large displacement of models that had unusable power for the streets that I travel. I've clocked nearly 3,000 miles on the 650 since I purchased it a few months ago, and I find it to have more than enough power for all the riding I do on a daily basis. The Interceptor was my first experience with the RE brand, and, videos from you and a couple others on TH-cam are the reason this bike got my attention. So... I began seeking more of your videos to see what the new Classic 350 is all about... well... a few weeks ago I wondered back into the RE dealer and plucked down the money for a new RE Classic 350 in Halcyon Black... clearly, the 350 is not a powerful bike. But, it brings joy to me with every ride... just like the Interceptor does... just in a different way. I no longer seem to be drawn to larger displacement bikes as they never made me smile quite like these two RE's. Wonderful content as always, Stuart. Thank you for producing these high quality and entertaining videos.

The absolute best investment I've ever made for myself. Owning a bike in the US is, for lack of a better word, a selfish thing. It's a toy. It's an amusement. You can call it a lifestyle, but it remains a self-indulgence nonetheless. It's nothing to be ashamed about. To me, it's therapy on wheels, therapy I lived without in order to be a "grown-up." I hadn't owned a motorcycle for forty years, and finally decided enough was enough. I researched this machine for over a year, got addicted to Uncle Stu (and another Englishman using the initials of MF) and bought the damn machine. Outside of "wife and kids", it's the best thing I've ever done. I really like your comparison with the trend of mechanical watches, Mr. Fillingham. And I think you’re right. Watches are a hobby of mine too. And as it is with my R.E. 500 Bullet I constantly experience a certain genuine interest from younger generations when it comes to my watches. Also the youngsters seem to need a break from this world of digital trends...
I think we are experiencing new generations who not, like the folks that were young in the 90’s and 00’s and therefore found the digital revolution new and exciting, but people who grew up with that as a given thing - and for that reason aren’t that keen on it other than as a fact of life.
I’m 64 and just bought my first motorcycle. Thought that a Bullet 500 would be a suitable choice for an older man. And more, it’s almost as simple as my moped in the 70’s was. I will be able mostly to maintain it myself and I think that’s an important part of the ownership too. Only things that will get me in trouble is electrical problems - I never was good at that😆

In my day, the youth motorcyclists had Yamaha FS1E sports mopeds. There were hundreds and hundreds of them, we would go too Brands, Mallory and Oulton for the Transatlantic series, we would go enmasse like about 30 "Fizzers" and various bigger bikes ridden by the 17 year olds. Motorcycling was mainstream in those days, cars were expensive compared too a bike.
It was bought home when Trev, my mate, and I went too WSB at Silverstone, and looking around there were NO 16 year olds, in fact there were no under 25's most were our age, in our fifties.
We all did the usual apprenticeship 50cc 125cc or 250cc then test and 750cc and bigger. It definitely seems that now, most riders are older, hopefully more sensible and more disposable income.
I chose the Interceptor based on looks, I would never admit it at the time but I had a hankering for a Bonneville or Commando, but by then NVT were building rubbish, unreliable and leaked more that a Cabinet minister.
At 64 the Interceptor ticks all my boxes.
    Just my opinion

Well said Uncle Stu! I really appreciate that you are actually making the masses realise that it’s not that of you have a big bike you have become a matured rider, it’s the perfect bike that you ride for years and muster that you actually become a seasoned person. Honestly, In the Eastern part of the world or I might say in Asia you do not have roads where you need higher speeds than what the 650s are capable of doing easily. Moreover, most of the time we don’t even ride a third of the speed that they are capable of. Royal Enfield has produced a machine which can become your companion from the time you start riding till your last. Even these are pretty inexpensive to maintain compared to other manufacturers. So, if you love these bikes, it will love you back and be by your side for years for sure.

Yes some bikes these days are more powerful than you need them to be. But unlike the old days this doesn't necessarily mean a bike with aggressive cams and ignition timing, that won't idle and is terrible to ride in a sedate way. You can now have bikes with power in reserve that will happily cruise at 40km/h and be smooth through low speed manoeuvres. I personally like the interceptor, think it's power is more than enough, and own one. But I'm also in the process of going 865cc with it, because by all accounts it can be done and doesn't affect your ability to ride exactly as you currently do - it just gives you the option for a bit more of a thrill in acceleration if wanted (and I often ride two up, so a little bit more grunt would be good).

The fact is that it is a simple and practical machine which is quiet capable and easy to own and maintain. I saved a load of money after I decided to buy this as I just paid the down payment amount of the other bike for owning this one. I saved all the EMIs.
you got your comments spot on.

Another winner from my favorite Uncle Stu! I agree and think that the RE Int650 is a great 1st bike. It's also a great 2nd, 3rd, or in my case 5th bike! It's like all great true classics; it never goes out of style. I tour on it, take it in canyons, the mountains, around town, through forest "twisties" and everywhere in between. It's also a great platform that feeds my addiction for tasteful customization (much of which have come from this channel). All while delivering tremendous value for money. And, forgive me Uncle Stu for saying this, but because I live in California, I get to ride all year long! Keep 'em coming, and happy belated birthday! From one classic to another...

When I envision " motorcycle ".... the mid 60's 650 Triumph comes to mind. The RE 650 twins have the same " vibe " and has the performance.. style and more, that other manufacturers of the venerable 650 twin have attempted over the years and failed. I enjoy my Xs650 Yamaha's and my classic Triton... but my Interceptor, in Ravishing red ! , sings a song I love to play....

You have a unique talent to tall to people. I have a 2006 sportster and a Triumph America LT. If I ever decide to get another motorcycle. It will be a Royal Enfield. The intersepter 650 intrigues me. Thanks

I'm a millenial and growing up, I had interests in old films and a strange anime that featured an old, talking motorcycle. I was fascinated by the design of that motorcycle and was sad to learn (as a child) that these motorcycles weren't in fashion anymore ( it was the 2000s). All I could see were these jarring sport motorcycles that didn't look comfortable to ride in.
Now grown up I realized that the motorcycle in that show was a Brough Superior. Clearly, Brough Superiors might be a "tad" (extremely) out of budget for a newbie like me. So when I heard that the Royal Enfield were coming out with these new but classic inspired motorcycles, I was overcome with joy.
Also, you were right on the nose with mechanical watches and motorcycles. I am also guilty of being interested in fountain pens, mechanical watchs/pencils/keyboards. Millenials like me probably love mechanical classic/vintage things because of the history and how pragmatic it is. It gives us a sense of control in our lives, a choice, while being surrounded by gigantic corporations who often care little about consumers and the environment. Another thing that millenials and gen z hates is the waste of resources, the short lived device industry is not sustainable and we're eventually gonna have to deal with the consequences of it.
But for now, it shouldn't hurt to enjoy the little things in life and that's where this revival of classical things comes in.
Thank you for the vid on the interceptor. Much support from a small millenial woman from PH.

There's lots of talk about starter motorcycles and motorcycles for experienced riders. Then mix in the large and heavy motorcycles. The variety of motorcycles available is amazing but there's a segment of riders that are ignored but shouldn't be. That segment is motorcycles for people getting old and moderately disabled like myself. Generally "starter bike's" almost fills that niche. Bike's for old riders need to be light because age takes away your strength and the seat height needs to be low so the rider can have both feet on the ground at stops. They also should come ready for the addition of a sidecar so the older rider can squeeze in another few years of riding motorcycles. The Royal Enfield motorcycles fit nearly all the requirements for an older rider including the fitting of a sidecar. Cozy sidecars here in the USA can ship several designs with mounting hardware designed for the Interceptor 650. I have a motorcycle with a sidecar and love it! I expect to be able to continue riding motorcycles until I am unfit to drive anything due to age.

    Hello Stuart.
First I want to congratulate you for the quality of your videos, the honesty, and the so deep thinkings behind your words, the gentleman rider you are and the way you show us to be on two wheels. ( sorry for my english I'm French native).
A piece of my story concerning this video.
I'm a future new rider (soon I will pass the A2 licence), and as I'm 57 years old I'm not really a new man.
So why at that age ?
For the last 15 years I took care alone of my 3 kids, while working, a lot to do, then now, as they are over 20, and I have some more time for myself, last year, I almost past by, and Docs found that I've a genetic heart disease. No way to resolve it, except pills, praying, and if it's goes wrong heart transplantion.
At this point, I felt down in my mind, and just wanted to give up, even if I've still responsibilities, with my kids, and my parents getting old. So I searched a way to come back to life, to a positive behavior, and the only way I found was to make a reasonable dream come true... Riding.
I'm not interested on speed, performance, technical specifications, or stupid ego. I just want to ride, enjoy simplicity, breath, feel free, alone, away from the crowd.
Planing this dream, first I sold my modern powerful big combi, and bought a ten years old little fiat panda 4x4.
Then I took a deep look at the motocycle market. Japanese bikes, Italian ones, English ones, American ones, etc... So many different ones, but almost all of them with a common point, ego. All about " Hey mate, look at what I'm riding !"
Then I got interested in Royal Enfield models, first for one thing, the bad comments I was reading about them... Cheap bikes, no performance, no electronic, etc... I saw those, comments so often that finally I thought that if Royal Enfield still exists and sell so many bikes, it can't be that bad, and there must be another reason for those so many bad comments, from people who have often not even owned or tried a Royal Enfield. I think I found a reason. Jealousy. Not about the performances or even the style of those bikes, but about the spirit of them. Freedom. Buying a modern bike, full of electronic options etc, powerful, is making our own jail, and never ever filling the dream we run after, because it's never enough, and there is always better...
Buying a simple bike, an "alive" one, is for me the way to reach the dream. And the jealousy of those guys is about this dream they will never reach. They feel they have missed something, but from their technologic, performance, ego jail, they can't find what they missed. So they buy, they ride, they sell, they buy better, they ride, they sell etc... It never ends for them and finally the dream turns to hell.
To come back to your video, first I was interested by the Himalayan. Simple, humble adventure bike.
Then I saw the interceptor, and the continental gt. Each one for me, in a different style, represents the idea of a real bike can be.
I sat on the meteor 350, and I felt home on this bike.
Then they announce the arrival of the super meteor, and the new classic 350 is coming.
At the end I watched at your videos about the classic 500, with a lot of nostalgia, thinking that it's not on production anymore.
So now I'm at a funny point where I would want all of them in my garage. I feel completely lost wondering which one would be the best for me. But my garage is not big enough and my bank account either.
So, I don't know which one I will take finally, but your video helped me knowing that the interceptor is a good new rider one, like all the other models. I feel a bit lost, because I know I won't ride so long, and I don't want to change my bike every year like a geek.
Secretly, I dream of a classic 500, to keep it, take care of it, but not so easy to find one here in a good shape at a decent price, so may be, another one. I will see, and I wonder what choice a guy like you would make in my situation.
    Be well and ride safe.

Well done sir. I applaud your perseverance and resolve. Lucky you and lucky kids to have such an introspective father. I'm 72 and my 24th motorcycle (after a 15 yr hiatus) I'm happy to say is a beautiful 2022 mark ll Interceptor. It's definitely not a machine about bravado, it is a silver haired, well mannered gentleman. I'd suggest it for you. You'd love it by the sounds of it. I wish I lived in France (or Italy) Canadian points of interest are so far apart (with no cafes or bars in between) one needs a nap or a hotel part way there. Bon voyage

I am 27 newbie from India and just booked my first bike 3 days back. Interceptor 650. Nothing appealed to me.
I can totally relate to other bikes feeling all the same. This one looks like a real motorcycle. Really excited for it :)
