Even though Guru shed light in his music his personal life was somewhat dark.
I believe, Solar, gained Guru’s confidence and trust during a dark period for Guru, and it spiraled from there. He has a cameo in the video for “Skillz” so he clearly was around before the breakup, and was probably in Guru’s “ear” sowing seeds of dissension.
Freddie FOXX aka Bumpy Knuckles spoke on this situation on his album which premier produced most of.

GURU was hella cool! ‘Daily Operations’ is one of my favorite albums of all time. I’m a die hard Gang Star fan! Rest in power GURU! Gang Star Forever!

My Brother... we worked together @ united way Boston and hung out some. Mostly we talked music. He loved hip hop. I (being a little older) always talked about funk/jazz. Ultimately we spent hours talking about why can't jazz and rap coexist? I I like think our conversations encouraged him on his musical journey. Rest in peace my friend!

I was on guru’s last two albums, I was on his label, along with high power and Dj Doowop, please respect the legacy of my big brother the late great Guru! Guru was not in a relationship with solar smh, I know the whole situation I was there, and I know Tasha personally who use to work for 7 grand and I’ve been told about the alleged abuse, however I’ve never witnessed Guru getting abused, not saying it didn’t happen, however solar never did any of that around me and power! but out of respect for Guru’s legacy please stop the slander and rumors! This is a very good documentary. I also heard the rumor about Guru and Solar. What man would let another man beat up on him, take his phone, take his inhaler. Treat him like that. It's very suspect. That rumor has been around for years. But Guru was very talented.

I met Guru several years ago at a concert when he was on tour with the Ghetto Boys, Destiny's Child and Jagged Edge. He approached me outside and was so kind, laid back and personable. He kind of faded away thereafter, but I wasn't sure why, so thank you for your excellent research and coverage as always!
GANG STARR is one of the greatest groups of all time, great music, they made some classic albums and DAILY OPERATIONS is a classic to me ,love that album, salute to DJ PREMIER & GURU and rest in power GURU, LONG LIVE GANG STARR !
This is definitely history for Boston. My grandmother grew up with gangstar father in Roxbury. She's one of the women that Made the boys and girls club instead of just the boys club near Dudley in Roxbury. My grandmother was a activist. Her name is ruby Rochelle and she still lives in Roxbury. She is 88 years old, she's a beautiful woman.❤❤❤❤ Thank God for history. And living in a town where people know each other. My mother also grew up with new addition. I was in a rap group as a teen in High School and we saved up money to record at Calliope Studios to record a demo. Iconic place. We chose that place because of the Tribes Peoples Instinctive Project. Great times. RIP Guru. Thanks for covering this.

This is sad. Looking into this Solar character's eyes...I can tell something is not right with him.This is the second Solar I've heard about on YT that brought darkness to someone's life. The other one is from a cult. Anyway, whatever maybe true or false about his relationship with this controversial dude...Guru's rhyme skills will never be forgotten. Wish Primo would have stuck by him to at least get him the help he needed.

YO! I had to be 14yrs old when I saw MANIFEST video on Video Music Box, after school. Then came video for POSITIVITY a few weeks later. One night I was listening to the radio, probably DJ RED ALERT. They played a few songs and that night but I did not like any to record to cassette. I thought "I need to find my own favorite rap group/artist from my era" instead of adopting my older brother's favorites. Then! a song came on with a strange beat that I instantly knew I liked. I pressed record. That song became my favorite song. NO MORE MR. NICE GUY (fed up remix). I scraped up a few dollars, went to the local record store and purchased the cassette single POSITIVITY with NO MORE MR. NICE GUY remix on the B side. One of my friends (Andy) asked for a copy as he heard me always reciting the lyrics. I made him a copy. All of my friends loved the song NO MORE MR. NICE GUY fed up remix. Little did I know Andy was a DJ in practice. He told me he has a surprise for me after school, to come to his house. When I arrived he came out with the full album NO MORE MR. NICE GUY LP on vinyl! He said "wait.. thats not the only surprise". He proceeded to play the title track, as I had yet to hear the album. THE ALBUM VERSION OF "NO MORE MR. NICE GUY" first the beat.. then at the same time as GURU began to rap, the beat dropped... I ALMOST LOST MY MINNND! EYES WIDE OPEN! ME: PLEASE CAN I GET A COPY?! CAN I GET A COPY?! Andy laughed and replied "Go get a tape (cassette)". I purchased that first GANG STARR ALBUM at least 4-5x. I still have the cassette single, album and CD. The album version of NO MORE MR. NICE GUY really strikes a nerve with my life. It is my all time favorite song, album of all time and GANG STARR will always be my #1 favorite. Thanks for making this video.

I was born in DC in 71 & grew up in the DMV & since 82-83 I’ve been a big fan of hip hop,I was deep into the culture (graffiti was my thing) anyway after seeing the video for “Manifest” for the 1st time I wanted to get the album….I scoured the DMV….Kemp Mill records,Waxie Maxie’s,Sam Goody’s…nothin 😞I finally found it at the Wiz on F st in NW DC & I still jam that song to this day 🖤🥶y’all be safe

I met Guru in DC at a club called the mirage nite club I had conversation with him it was like we were homies I was already fan of the group I even have a pic with him I always post it on social media on his birthday and the day he passed long live Guru of Gangstarr

Guru and Solar relationship seems suspect. I never heard this story of their relationship. It’s just an odd relationship between two grown men. I’m an oncology nurse and multiple myeloma doesn’t kill you so quickly. The circumstances surrounding his death is very sketchy.

Thanks for putting this together 💯 The first Gang Starr album I picked up was "Full Clip." Yes.. I was late to the game, but I never looked back and I was hooked. The chemistry that Guru had with Primo is unmatched to produce timeless music period. Guru will always be missed by true heads as one of the pioneers of hip-hop.

Guru is my favorite conscious rapper. His voice is super smooth and the beats with DJ premier just topped it all off. Moment of Truth is a top 10 of all time rap song to me. Guru was super original and payed homage to the OGs and kept that jazzy sound.
