I keep rewatching all of these 'first tournament' videos and my anxiety is through the roof! My first tournament is tomorrow and im so nervous/excited!
@@TevenOG so I got a default silver(only two of us)- BUT I learned a ton from that tournament and absolutely crushed the next one! I stopped doing BJJ when COVID started, and then got pregnant, and now have a kiddo- so this was such a nice memory to have pop up 🥰
1. make sure you train as much as you can for at least 6 weeks before the comp. 2. make sure you keep the best diet you can for at least 6 weeks before the comp 3. work your cardio 4. work your a game - the game you will apply during the fight 5. smoke some weed night before the comp 6. meditate
Just competed this weekend for the first time. I'm a white belt and I had this happen to me, the stress took all my strength and energy it felt. I lost but the biggest take away was how do I learn to breath and get over it. Thanks for the advice.
My two cents from personal experience... Public Speaking Fear X 1000 = 1st Bjj Tournament Anxiety dump, completely burned out 1 min in. If you're competing in Gi, your grip will be dead. Do not listen to heavy intense music if you have anxiety. Listen to dun, uplifting music. Don't look at it as a fight. Look at it as a fun experience. Getting too pumped, if you're anxious, is going to drain the shit out of you.
Embrace it! Don't think of it as negative like being nervous. See it as anxiousness. Getting ready for something. Think of the anxiousness that comes while you're waiting for something awesome to happen. You can barely sit still. Think of it that way.
Im prepping for The World Masters in Vegas and this video has given me some sound ideas for managing the anxiety that Im feeling. I want to do well in the midst of the high caliber talent that is going to be there. I dont have any expectations of winning it, but im going to do my best and learn a ton. Thanks, Chewy! I enjoy all of your videos, especially the one where you guys wore Miami Vice jackets and trained. It was so funny.
Watching this in a sauna while shaving off my last 5 pounds before tomorrow. I’m not nervous, yet. But tomorrow may be different when I see the mat. I just keep telling myself, eventually I’m going to wake up the day after comp and I’m gunna be so proud of myself. I just need to get through this
For me it sounds like a great advice, the point on not watching the rolls before you. That gets me real anxious, not sure why, maybe im easily intimmidated. But anyway nice job on the video.
I’m watching this video because I got a tournament on July 21st, I’m 15 and I’ve been training for about 6 months now & I’ll be doing my first tournament ! In this particular tournament teens are only Gi but I train 10th planet & the only option left would be to do adult nogi so that’s what I’m setting out to do ....... I’m so nervous
I’ve wrestled since I was like 6 all the way up through high school. I can remember not being nervous or having anxiety before my matches. I do feel like it got worse as I got older. When I started fighting and competing in jiu jitsu years after high school I still get nerves. Usually everything disappears when the fight or match starts but man anxiety can drive me crazy.
6 months in almost and am looking to compete in August in a local submission only tournament (first comp and it sounds more fun to me than a tournament with points involved) and the date lines up a few weeks before I hit the year anniversary of me starting jujutsu
Great video, well some people in my club was gonna compete in this tournament and that kinda made me want to do it aswell, so why not, it's next month and i have literally been training BJJ for 1 month hahah, but i did train MMA for over 1 year and still train it aswell, so i got some grappling from that, i'm the guy that gets nervous for absolutely everything, but i'm not feeling that anxiety yet hehe, i'm not going to this tournament thinking i'm going to win, i'm going into this tournament thinking i want to do my best, bc if i lose and realise i could have done so much better i'm just gonna be pissed at myself, i see it as a fun experience, love from Sweden!
I'm watching for a mock tournament, ive been to three real tournaments and I've never been this stressed, we are doing a mock tournament, i made the fighting poster which looks really dope, we made the weigh ins even though the other guy is about 17 kilos heavier than me and 15 sm taller than me, we made the trash talk, and now I'm very nervous 🙂
I have a tournament soon, I get severe anxiety and it’s not even about losing, my skills really great but it’s just the environment that feels heavy. I’ve had it since age 6 in BJJ I always seem to find myself worrying alot.
little over 2 weeks out from my first tournament (2 stripe white belt whos been training for over a year) ive been rolling with higher belts and other people and even during roils i find myself getting locked alone in my own head and most of the time i get my ass kicked before i can even breathe and just go. its caused me to make me wonder if im really equipped for it
Hi there. I was just in first tournament and I train really hard for it, but what I didn't train for was the anxieties and fear. The anxiety was so high that as soon as I got on the mat and it was time to go, my mind went blank. I couldn't even do the simplest of techniques... What can I do to pls help.
Mind going blank is pretty normal. I tell all of my guys to do the same thing. 1. Come up with a gameplan of the moves you plan to use. 2. Drill and get repetitions of those moves. You don't have to be good at everything, just a few things, to win a BJJ tournament. 3. On the day of. Constantly visualize the moves you plan to use. Over and over and over again. See yourself executing the techniques in your mind. 4. By this point when you step on the mat you should be primed and ready to go and fire off your techniques on auto pilot.
Chewjitsu look I am a white belt but i have knowledge I do mma I always have done stand up but never bjj but in my gym I don't get taped out by high white belts at all or some blue belts but I don't submit anyone I just can't win but I don't loose any tips

Took 4 years off, just started training again, really enjoying your channel brother...
Thanks Chewy, just won my first tournament :D
This is one of the most articulate of your videos. Well-spoken! Thank you for posting throughout the years. Lots of good stuff, for sure.
I hated being nervous before competition. Now, I love it. I don’t think it will ever go away but you learn how to deal with it the more you compete.
