Just do both! Gi and No Gi has different benefits which everyone should practice in both. Just doing one makes the student incomplete. All the best ever did both Gi and no Gi Roger Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Marcelo Garcia, Mendes brothers, etc…….
I'm a black belt gym owner, we do six months during the warmer time of year down here in the south No Gi only and the other six months Gi only. I've been doing that for about 3 years now and everyone seems to really appreciate and enjoy the different seasons. As a coach I enjoy the singular focus every six months that gets shifted. Before, we were a Gi only gym because that WAS my preference.
I know gyms like that here where I live, but it's only three months of NoGi for them, casue we are in central europe, Hungary, which is a bit colder. :)
Truth is no gi will work on a clothed opponent but knowing gi will allow you to use the clothing against them if necessary. I consider both to be important even if you like one over the other. At least get some basics. Same goes for judo/wrestling lack of which makes your BJJ look silly.
when i was just a white belt i was able to use a collar and sleeve of a drunk guys coat to keep him pinned and prevent him attacking my buddy. everyone always talks about how nogi is more realistic to life but im just like 'does no one wear clothes where you are?'
but why is people so obsessed with street fights? Unless you live in a real rough area, street fights are just unusual to the extreme, and probably cause by you if you participate in a lot
@Gabi24492 I don't think anyone here is "obsessed" worth street fighting. But this martial art was created around the idea of self defense. Which we're slowly drifting away from each day. To where we've lost that aspect almost completely now
As a brown belt who was ONLY GI for entire run of sport, I've switched over to only no gi. I had double shoulder surgeries and was off mats for 2 years. Since being back ive found that with no gi im able to keep my joints tighter and thus safer.
Hmmmm, I've trained for a while (some years) and yes there's a bigger component with the Gi but once you get used to it, it doesn't feel that different to me. Everything you can do in no gi you can do in GI, you just have to address the grips
Outside the occasional oddball acute finger injury, IMHO, that's because they haven't figured out how to not death-grip and have a lighter touch or how to use gi-grips judiciously. Amusingly, the same thing happens with newbie motorcycle riders but you don't hear people talk about quitting riding because of overuse injuries to their fingers. People learn not to death grip the controls. I don't really get it. Is it easier to move someone's arm with four fingers in their cuff doing all the work or four fingers in their cuff and a hand cupped behind the elbow or on the tricep doing 80%+ of the work while you use the cuff to guide the hand where you want the arm to go? Obviously the latter. So, why are you burning out your hands on holding the cuff all the time when the only time you really need to hammer your fingers is for a few moments with a lasso or spider type of guard which should be going somewhere else, like a sweep or attack, anyway. If you're burning out your hands on their lapels, you need a better choke/sweep game and to know how/when to apply force with your hands to the lapel and to start using grips over the head for your more forceful stuff like breaking down their posture. The answer to figuring those things out is not to quit gi, it's to study the game more.
As an older, smaller grappler who mostly trains as a fun, interesting way for good workouts, I choose to only train GI right now. I have trained no-gi, and ages ago I wrestled in high school, but in GI helps me slow down the larger, younger beasts and train at a pace I can sustain well enough to train multiple times a week.
Gi really bangs me up too. I mostly train no gi now mainly because the nogi class days fall on my free time amd gi doesnt. Id like to do both but theres natural overlap anyway.
As an older grappler, I train more NoGi. I start from standing about sixty percent of the time. The other amount I pull guard. Definitely less hurt after training NoGi. I don’t mind the speed, I can still keep up. I also like the leg locks.
As a person that practices striking arts in a No Gi setting. I personally like No Gi better cause any kind of grabs are harder. You can still grab someone's skin in certain areas like it's a Gi, and it hurts them more.
starting on our knees even though it slows down our take down learning progression it reduces injuries , your going to end up on the ground and knees anyhow unless you want to stand up and punch it out or do Gracie street Defence . Gi and no Gi are both important aspects to self Defence and doing both give a wider range to our self Defence . Competition Gi , no Gi or MMA can really enhanced and intensify your training but for the average Joe the benefits are more like personal improvement well being confidence and of course to protect ones self and loved ones .
Super helpful video for me! Thank you so much for laying that out. I hate gi and do just nogi, but I was wondering if I should give it another chance. I then got forced to train gi at a randoori (I missed the memo it changed to gi), and I got super frustrated with the grips they'd get on me (and I reacted exactly like you said in the video 😂)
Hey Chewy, what differences do you see between no-gi jiujitsu and catch wrestling? I'm a gi nerd so I've begun referring to nogi as no-shoe catch wrestling :D Joking aside, it just comes down to rulesets. In most jiujitsu tournaments, anyway, there's different rulesets for no-gi and gi at same "belt" level.
I think it's personal preference but I also think that a lot of places that are training no-gi miss a lot of things. I, personally, mostly do gi for a couple of reasons that don't much matter to anyone else. But when I do no-gi, I'm constantly impressed by how few chokes any of these people know beyond the RNC. It's all shoulder and arm locks or leg attacks. Cross, Punch or Ezekiel choke someone in no gi and at least 80% of the people I run across have zero defense to it because they never see it. Mostly they're entirely caught by surprise because they didn't know such a thing was... a thing. They're not even aware that they're in any sort of danger until they realize that they need to tap. They basically don't defend their neck unless you take their back, which I just find strange. But hey, I'm kind of a choke/strangle specialist so I'll take it all day.
Become familiar, but do you not think this is in reference to knowing how to counter it? A jack of all trades is master of none. I say the best counter to a gi master is to take off your jacket lol
No Gi is an excuse to feel more comfortable without a gi on.. you're not challenging yourself or stepping out of your comfort zone. You found a loophole congratulations ..and bigger players often get upset because they can't control smaller players as easily. No gi, I feel is for people who can't handle the ego side of jujitsu. Also for people who are used to being wrestlers, or just want to compete in MMA, but at the end of the day, you learn so much more by being in a Gi class... push your self. Gi is the true sport
Just listen to chewy's excuses here. The only valid one would be "my hands hurt" but it's a simple fix. If someone goes to break your grip, LET GO and go for another grip. "My joints hurt from ppl wrapping the lapel around my arm" is the weakest excuse I've ever heard. I love leglocks but a heel hook is 1000x more dangerous than someone getting you in a cross collar choke. Or a hurt finger for that matter. Train both and obviously you'll naturally gravitate to one. But that doesn't mean either should be exiled from existence.. Sorry I'm venting 😂, my coach just knocked gi down to one day a week because "nogi is trending"
I agree with a belt promotion night with everyone wearing the gi just looks better. Most everyone in ours wears a gi, but some refuse to wear a gi. That's their choice. And we are really flexible. Putting a new belt on with rash guard and shorts does look a little weird. It's sort of like weddings and funerals. Suit and tie or nice slacks and a dress shirt just looks a little nicer. Does every wedding ore funeral have to be that way? No, but it does just look better when everyone is wearing whatever nicer clothes they have (not everyone can afford a suit).
I agree with everything here except promotions. There is no belt system in no gi. If you want to be a black belt in jiu jitsu, jiu jitsu is a Gi sport. You can't get a black belt in no gi Judo, but you can get really good at throwing no gi, it's called Greco.
I've been training jujitsu for 6 months and I hope I don't have to do competition because it scares me that someone will kimura my arm even if I tap and then later I'm in hospital paying a bill I can't afford do I have to do competition to get to the next belt?
This is just my opinion: If a nogi person gets ranked up, they should receive a ranked rash guard or shorts because they'll never use the belt. If they do both gi and nogi, they should receive the belt rank.
No gi is too sweaty and slippery for me. But I think I'd like to try it in the future more. I'd like to use BJJ for self defense and feel like nogi might be more practical but I mean people wear shirts and belts and pants.
Not many people seem to understand people wear other clothes other than gi. All the run away, he might have friends people don't seem to think it's a good idea to break grips😬
Im focused on mma but to me the gi days are an opportunity to train more. Im also doing competitions and most have both divisions so i do them for more experience. I think it is a useful thing to do but that is my dumb blue belt opinion
Better than nothing but remember, every rep you spend drilling spider guard you could be practicing something you may actually use in mma like cage wrestling or shootboxing
My gym requires gi to advance. I don’t mind even though I prefer no gi. My goal is just not to embarrass myself when I roll gi with my stupid purple belt on
Gi is better for combat situations unless your fighting somebody naked. Even though you will likely mever come across someone attacking you with a Gi on it still simulates various kinds of clothing such as jackets, shirts, belts and pants. In combat you have to learn how to deal with clothing as people will grab your clothing and you can also grab theirs to gain an advantage.
@@nopenope2461 You can't possibly be serious. To train a reliance on attire vs pure anatomy is better for self defense to you? You better train gi on concrete while wearing shoes as well, otherwise you're coping.
If you're serious about it the answer is a mix. You might fight a guy who's wearing a hoodie or a coat. Even a tshirt can be used shockingly well to your advantage. Understanding how pants can be used to control people is the same thing because a lot of people wear jeans or khakis. OTOH, you can run into someone who's shirtless and wearing basketball shorts when it's 100 degrees out so they're also slippery. From a purely self-defense point of view you would probably want both unless you live near the equator or a pole and neve travel. But part of self-defense is also layering your defenses and paying attention to your surroundings. You can't shoot ON that guy who's halfway across a parking lot but you can shoot him and he can shoot you, for example. But you can avoid 95% of that simply by paying enough attention and avoiding situations where you might have defend yourself in the first place.
One of the bjj blokes i know says the gi is lazy, he says you havent got a gi on the street... mind you, if you know how to choke someone with a gi, you can at least attempt it with a jacket, hooded top or whatever
@vicn1349 i agree, when we've done some no gi and then the gi is back i feel relieved! I had a pti that made me do lat pulldowns on the machine by threading the bar through the gi, i had to do collar grips and cuff grips and it flippin' hurt but my grips were VERY STRONG which benefitted me in everyday life, carrying things and stuff.
Well, no one walks around in public a rash guard either. I feel like those arguments, in both directions, are silly. "bUt wHaT iF He tAkEz hIZ sHirT oFf?!" is the one I hear all the time. Uh, walk/run away instead of agree to mutual combat? Failing that, reap/Footsweep/shoot on him while his shirt's over his head? You know, a takedown while he's blinded himself and tied up his own arms? Is this really that hard to figure out? Besides, the best argument for gi is that if you want to make preppy types feel awkward, have them do a couple weeks of gi and see how fast they stop wearing that polo shirt in public...
Gi is for your sport . I don't want to learn how to choke out with someone Gi . Always stand Chew. it's more realistic . If it's true we fight as we train then why even start on the ground . Get someone in your gym that's a boxer or any striking art per say . I would suggest mma gloves though . Only fighters should do this but this will teach your students reality put a mouth piece in and strike and get the student brings him down . Teach your students to cover the back of the neck as well . Your no longer wrestling double leg takedown never ok on the single leg takedown but this is where your students well not your personally but the art itself cause that's what I would hit if someone dropped low on me right under the rear of the skull then the collision on the neck then drop my whole weight knee 1st into the head . Or just step on one of their foot and keep your opponent foot to mother earth a push them back or sideways . It's over . I don't think it's ever smart to fight on the ground . It would be my last option . Plus I'm weapon based as well . There is no need to train on the ground for me anyways . Even if one were to get one of them good for you I guess it's gonna be a fair fight . Cause I have two more . Sure hope they don't throw it away lol . They are gonna need it at that point . The ones that cross trains are your fighters . The ones that stick with bjjj alone are not . Sorry but it's truthful . For self-defense which done correctly its really self-offense ! I tried BJJ 3× teaching me things I don't care about that I won't use it to choke someone with a Gi . For the hobbyists I don't think it's fun but for those who enjoy great . It's better then sitting home doing nothing . Well 2 and a half men is coming on . I'm home doing nothing. Lol
Is it safe enough as a novice to just say nogi is better for scrambles and getting faster paced rolls and more 'attempts' while the sandpaper effect of gi makes for a bit more technical escape training?
The gi is BJJ. No-gi is submission grappling. If you don't care about belts, then continue on in no-gi. Your head coach can reward you with colored rashguards.
... You're not depending on a lack of clothing to apply no gi techniques. They're universal. For lapel grips, sleeve grips, etc, you're not only counting on an attacker to wear the right format of clothes but also counting on whatever 2025 fast fashion bs they're wearing not to tear like a napkin in a struggle.
Hurt fingers has a pretty easy solution, don't be a meathead and just let go.. I like training both, but unfortunately, my coach just cut Gi class down to 1 day a week... Nogi breeds 🐱's imo. Also, I like the respect that the Gi brings. Train both, it's supposed to be challenging.
I have the exact opposite experience. My Gi brothers are chill but no gi guys are like muscley jack rabbits. Everyone moves so fast and with slippy grips it can be a real challenge to slow the roll down. My entire no gi game has just boiled down to cradling and smashing until a arm comes free.
Worth knowing basic grip breaks but that’s about it. Really not that hard once you’re already a decent grappler. I never get the narrative that the gi is “more technical”. Should we do bjj underwater and wear a tie with the gi to make it more complex and “technical” too?
My current gym is small satellite of a large gym. Nogi classes 5x a week are a lot of fun, but the gi classes 3x a week are very boring with bad structure - two light 4 minute rounds and class is over before I break a sweat. Almost no one goes.
Just a white belt here, but having a rope around my neck that everyoneone wants to choke me with is kind of annoying. I spend half of the time just fighting this annoyance off.
@@FeralLogic This. I've always disliked the rationale equating "slow" and "strategically deep" in games and sports. They also do the same with more conservative meta-games. I understand you might feel smarter given more time to consider your choices, but that's obviously an ego thing. Other people might be making the smart choices at a speed you can't process in the faster game.
Both are like chess if you could level up your pieces and you didn’t have to wait for your opponent to make their move to make another. You just get different pieces
Great points. I can see the attraction to both. I enjoy no gi because it is different, and helps me understand the wrestling influence on modern Jiu Jitsu, and gives me another realm to apply my own jiu jitsu. I will say that I personally prefer Gi, mainly as a traditionalist, and I like my partners to have more threats to use against me (just my own opinion). Even though you will likely mever come across someone attacking you with a Gi on it still simulates various kinds of clothing such as jackets, shirts, belts and pants. In combat you have to learn how to deal with clothing as people will grab your clothing and you can also grab theirs to gain an advantage.
@ thanks man.

The Gi is not lazy … grip fighting and escaping requires more technique in the Gi. I feel like playing guard in Nogi is lazy
Ye, I try not to fight nakey people.

John daneher:"am I a joke to you?"
Lol
I think if you are in a street fight against a guy with a hoodie it's useful. It won't be useful in an MMA fight though
Always this shitty answer. It's a sport and that's it. Always this "I won't work In a street fight bs". If you feel good and have fun, just do it..
Is it safe enough as a novice to just say nogi is better for scrambles and getting faster paced rolls and more 'attempts' while the sandpaper effect of gi makes for a bit more technical escape training?
sport vs street pretty much right?
💯
The GI being funeral dress is a reminder one can die training and practicing the martial arts.
I hate gi, i'm at a new gym and they only have 3 classes, 2 gi and 1 no gi, so i'm forced to train gi
If you can try find an mma gym or do some sessions with training partners at home or in the park. No gi is so important
The Gi is harder, I just want to be lazy
The GI is much harder, and most don’t wanna be tapped out relentlessly when they’re athletic
@@benjamindelfs2718 Or controlled.
The gi is BJJ. No-gi is submission grappling. If you don't care about belts, then continue on in no-gi. Your head coach can reward you with colored rashguards.
Well said.
My unprofessional opinion is Gi training is and can be better for self-defense situations since people tend to wear more clothes out on the streets
I'm happy never doing Gi. I don't like it, so why should I do it? My time is precious and it's easier thinking just in one bjj language
Has nothing to do with gi or no gi
6 months and dude is crapping on gi? lol
Just a white belt here, but having a rope around my neck that everyoneone wants to choke me with is kind of annoying. I spend half of the time just fighting this annoyance off.
That's the point.
Gi is only for the manliest of men 💪
Comment of the day! 🤣🤣🤣
GI sucks. My neck is wrecked after GI training. Jiu-jitsu will be fused with Catch wrestling (some Judo too) in the very near future.
First
gi is chess, no-gi is checkers. fair?
No. No-gi is also chess - just higher tempo, more free flowing and fewer finger injuries.
But Gi is wrestling in pajamas!
