When smashing aerosol cans you need to have like a blow torch setup close by so it will auto ignite the butane used to pressurise them! Even more fun for the slowies. Just a heads up, those springs have crossed coils and have potential to slip past eachother kind of like when you snap your fingers. I worked for a spring manufacturing company for 6 years making high tensile springs with 1/2"+ diameter wire, the loads when comprsessed are in the thousands of pounds of pressure. Pro tip: be very careful with where they end up. 🙂
Yep. I worked as a mechanic, and I would not have been outside that bunker at all. They don't call manual strut spring compressors "widow makers" for nothing.
Those springs looked permanently deformed, so it probably wouldn't have killed anyone if the coils uncrossed.....although I could see losing a finger or two.

Different color plastic pellets could be pressed by this into interesting designs if you make a mold to help form them. The pressure will generate enough heat to get the job done. The Legos gave me that idea.

From a strictly mechanical point of view, I really liked the springs. You could see that as the springs were compressing it didn't slow the hammer one bit, but as soon as the coils stacked solid, there was a massive hesitation in the hammer for an instant. The best looking one, my vote goes to the metal drum.

Guys, did you know that the US considered making aircraft carriers out of ice, that was saturated with wood pulp? You guys could easily make a wood pulp (sawdust or paper) ice cube block and test what the military thought was stronger than steel at stopping high speed impacts. The material is called pykrete.

Yeah, the barrel was a high point of the video. Sure, water is incompressible, which could lead you to think that it'd stop the hammer... but the sides of the barrel give out way before it gets to a fight of water vs hammer. So it's like stomping on a full and unopened soda can, scaled up, ohhh, about 500×.

If you want to argue that point then go ahead and argue with the ancient Mayans, Aztecs, and Incans who all used obsidian weapons and never had a diamond pickax ever. All obsidian is is when lava is rapidly cooled when it comes into contact with water. It forms a kind of glassy material, which is obsidian. It's ability to be chunked into incredibly sharp edges (sharper than a surgical scalpel) is it's pro. The con is that it's brittle and can shatter like glass. It's a bit stronger than glass, but it's not stronger than a diamond.
The obsidian was definitely my favorite slowie of the day. I do wish the plate was cleaned prior to the drop because the slowie would have been wayyyy cleaner!
The aftermath: That field would be sparkly for years. Glitter never goes away. I wore a t-shirt with the word "Angel" on the front, and wings on the back, made out of silver glitter. The type that flakes off easily.. That was two weeks ago. I STILL find glitter here & there.. Just from one shirt. Imagine 100 pounds of it! (just a tad over 45.3 kg)
The springs were very interesting. U can clearly see they work exactly as intended as they compress perfectly until fully compressed. If they had stopped the hammer’s momentum at that point, then the springs would have pushed the hammer back at maximum force. However, the springs did not stop the hammer. Thus, the springs permanently deformed and did not push the hammer back.

To be fair, those suspension springs had no chance taking 3 tons with that much gravity when they're normally paired with shock absorbers and tires and a bunch of other little things to take a lot less pressure, but a few uprated springs for either AWD off roading or something might stand a chance of a good bounce
To be fair in most suspensions the shocks are their to stop the springs from being so springy and not always to resist the force and those were pretty beefy springs so you'd need something like for a train car or something like that to maybe stand a tiny bit of chance .
HR --- I would love to see a 🔥HOT 🔥steel cube under this huge hammer. Maybe even do an episode at night time for the best slow-mo effect! AND if you do do it night maybe smash steel wool on fire as well. It would be so EPIC!!

Yeah, that could be epic -- compression generates heat, plus there's instant surface area, I don't think that it would all sublimate, but I think you'd get enough to look awesome.
its just going to get smashed into pieces the transferred heat from the blow isn't going to have a huge effect compared to it being smashed and the increased surface area but would still look cool!
My vote's for the 44 gal. barrel - that water plume was awesome! As for other things to smash - acrylic is _brittle;_ try a cube of polycarbonate, nylon, Tritan or some other similar "tough" plastic. How about a three way challenge where you start with the same materials and have to create a structure to resist the hammer. ;)
I have to go for the wine barrel for Slowy of the Day. I love liquid slowies, and it was cool seeing the metal rings come off and the water go through the slats.
Considering that obsidian glass shards are some of the sharpest objects we know of, roughly 10x sharper then surgery scalpels that cube was superbly dangerous and them handing the pieces barehanded made me cringe lol good stuff

My favorite slowie was the barrel. The water coming through the slats and then the surprise explosion at the end was like getting a double smash with one swing of the hammer.
I reckon the wood block could've gone better if it were closer to a perfect cylinder. The slope on the top meant it only had a sliver of wood to start the breakage.
Silly string is formed as it exits the nozzle. What you need is a big container of the material, with a plunger, forcing it out of an orifice. It will make a huge "yarn" ball in milliseconds.

Yeah, the barrel was a high point of the video. Sure, water is incompressible, which could lead you to think that it'd stop the hammer... but the sides of the barrel give out way before it gets to a fight of water vs hammer. So it's like stomping on a full and unopened soda can, scaled up, ohhh, about 500×.
They dropped Nigel in two and it looked like 2 times better

Fun fact: obsidian isn't actually that difficult to break, its like strong glass, but it makes sharp shards if it does break so don't touch it. If you're unprofessional of course.

If you want to argue that point then go ahead and argue with the ancient Mayans, Aztecs, and Incans who all used obsidian weapons and never had a diamond pickax ever.
All obsidian is is when lava is rapidly cooled when it comes into contact with water. It forms a kind of glassy material, which is obsidian. It's ability to be chunked into incredibly sharp edges (sharper than a surgical scalpel) is it's pro. The con is that it's brittle and can shatter like glass. It's a bit stronger than glass, but it's not stronger than a diamond.
I think it's just a way to attract people as well as to record footage of something fun.

The aftermath: That field would be sparkly for years. Glitter never goes away. I wore a t-shirt with the word "Angel" on the front, and wings on the back, made out of silver glitter. The type that flakes off easily.. That was two weeks ago. I STILL find glitter here & there.. Just from one shirt. Imagine 100 pounds of it! (just a tad over 45.3 kg)

The springs were very interesting. U can clearly see they work exactly as intended as they compress perfectly until fully compressed. If they had stopped the hammer’s momentum at that point, then the springs would have pushed the hammer back at maximum force. However, the springs did not stop the hammer. Thus, the springs permanently deformed and did not push the hammer back.

To be fair, those suspension springs had no chance taking 3 tons with that much gravity when they're normally paired with shock absorbers and tires and a bunch of other little things to take a lot less pressure, but a few uprated springs for either AWD off roading or something might stand a chance of a good bounce

To be fair in most suspensions the shocks are their to stop the springs from being so springy and not always to resist the force and those were pretty beefy springs so you'd need something like for a train car or something like that to maybe stand a tiny bit of chance .
Wine barrel was probably my fav for slowy, as that wood separating, and the green coming through were just hard to beat.

Yeah, that could be epic -- compression generates heat, plus there's instant surface area, I don't think that it would all sublimate, but I think you'd get enough to look awesome.

its just going to get smashed into pieces the transferred heat from the blow isn't going to have a huge effect compared to it being smashed and the increased surface area but would still look cool!
My vote's for the 44 gal. barrel - that water plume was awesome!
As for other things to smash - acrylic is _brittle;_ try a cube of polycarbonate, nylon, Tritan or some other similar "tough" plastic.
How about a three way challenge where you start with the same materials and have to create a structure to resist the hammer. ;)
I have to go for the wine barrel for Slowy of the Day. I love liquid slowies, and it was cool seeing the metal rings come off and the water go through the slats.
The tire was fascinating because it didn't look like it popped the tire. It looked like the rim bent before the tire could actually be damaged.

Considering that obsidian glass shards are some of the sharpest objects we know of, roughly 10x sharper then surgery scalpels that cube was superbly dangerous and them handing the pieces barehanded made me cringe lol good stuff

My favorite slowie was the barrel. The water coming through the slats and then the surprise explosion at the end was like getting a double smash with one swing of the hammer.

I reckon the wood block could've gone better if it were closer to a perfect cylinder. The slope on the top meant it only had a sliver of wood to start the breakage.
Silly string is formed as it exits the nozzle. What you need is a big container of the material, with a plunger, forcing it out of an orifice. It will make a huge "yarn" ball in milliseconds.
This is 20 solid minutes of quality entertainment, and I feel cheap for saying so.
