At 8:10 you show an overhead of the main chassis. You can see the launch wheel. If I had to guess, maybe 1.5" in diameter. In the world of machining, and everything else too, there is a thing called surface footage. It boils down to getting the most from a given RPM. If you were to double, or even considerably increase the diameter of that wheel, the motor RPM would produce a much better result launching those knives. Its like sitting in the middle of a merry go round vs. running around the outside. The RPM is the same, but the speed is waaaaaaay different. Just move the motor up and use a bigger wheel and stand back. Nice job, by the way. Thumbs up.
Ya, but you're overlooking the other, more important argument for a bigger wheel, make it of steel so it would have some inertia, you can see how much that thing slows down each time it fires.
@@Nevir202 exactly what i was thinking!!! turn the kinetic energy of the drill into potential in the form of a flywheel of sorts, then dump it all on the knife
Right, I love seeing videos with "DIY Knife Gun build.....first we're going to get started with our Tormach Laser Space Gun CNC machine, thanks Tormach for sending me this $50,000 machine for free"
Hey man . I came across from alec’s channel. You could try a larger diameter friction wheel to give you more speed and maybe a longer knife for longer acceleration time ? Only if you feel like it tho! 😁
Great work Tyler. This might be a personal thing but I would love to see you talk a little more about the challenge and the design you have for it before you launch into making it. It is fun to watch you making things but I'm sometimes not clear on what it is you are actually making. I hope you take this in the way it is meant and that's constructively. Keep it up!
No need for higher rpm! He did not use up the torque the motor has, Just use a bigger weel to accelerate the blades. 3x the size would still be a good start I think.
Just came across your channel on my recommendations yesterday, looking forward to what you get on! Something you could do as an improvement to this would be to utilize the racking mechanism to add additional forward force. Racking back would latch a spring, racking forward would pull on the spring storing up force. Then once you have racked forward enough it would unlatch the spring letting it compress all in one go and propel the knife forward onto the wheel which can then add the additional force it can. Should be a lot more repeatable too since its not necessarily dependent on how fast you can rack it forward.
Awesome as always. To the extent you ever revisit this project, you may want to add a follower to the magazine...maybe even as simple as a small wooden block being pulled down by rubber bands attached to the exterior sides of the magazine. This would apply just enough downward pressure on the knives so that they wouldn't rattle around in the magazine and would still feed correctly. This way you wouldn't be limited to holding the gu...I mean the projectile accelerator...horizontally.
Praise the algorithm for sending this into my feed! I love that you're making cool stuff without a team, and tens of millions of laser/water jet/3D printing tomfoolery, just what any average builder can get their hands on. I especially loved seeing how you seemed to make tools for the purpose of assisting you - you see a problem, you make something to help you solve it. Not talking about the knife gun, just those little incidental things you make to make making easier, if that makes sense.
If you were ever to make a v2 of this, I'd recommend swapping the handles. Make the one you're moving be at the front and the one with the trigger at the back. Like a traditional pump action gun. With this iteration though you'll need to make the pumping part pull rather than push. I would also recommend specifically NOT to increase the speed they come out at, because that may actually bring this close to being something truly deadly.
Dude! You do not make enough videos. You know I'm a big fan and videos like this are the reason why. This was intelligent, fun and well made. What else is there? 👏
How is your channel only this big? Production value is fantastic, really interesting and entertaining videos, great explanations... TH-cam is sleeping on you man, seriously great stuff.
I know I'm late to the party on this video with my comment, but I just had to say a couple of things: I love how you are doing these videos to motivate others to challenge themselves to do difficult things. There is absolutely not enough of that in this world today. But, however, the best in this video - "and that problem being, I need to shoot knives". It's freaking perfect.... I think I've mentioned this before in comments on a couple of your videos, but you are my favorite lunatic!!!!
amazing build! im wondering if you made a flywheel cage with 2 motors similar to electric nerf blasters you can get some better results. I know in nerf the flywheels are stiff cause the darts have some give and gets more overall surface area contact. so if you used rubberized wheels cause the knifes are stiff you might be able to get a similar result.
Honestly this was a brilliant idea. You came up short on performance but that is where team-think can bring out the best in a design! Now someone, somewhere, is going to be using this idea and working out the velocity bug and making the design better!
Definitely getting this recommended to me because of going axe throwing recently.. But i think you could get extra range if you added extra motors, maybe one spinning the other direction so you could place it on the other side. Or motors under the knives as well as on top.
Did you ever do an upgraded version of this? I know a ninja that is very interested in purchasing one. His throwing arm was taken by a samurai in battle.
Tyler possible upgrade for the knife gun?? Larger wheel on the electric motor, much larger and much heavier, while the motor won't be able to spin it with as much torque, the motor will bring it up to speed in-between reloads and the larger heavier flywheel on the motor will ha e enough enertia and speed to launch the knife faster.
other than increasing the wheel diameter my only other suggestion would be to move the motor closer to the knifes so that it engages the knives sooner in your trigger pump stroke.
tip for potential V2, you can have a bigger wheel and then attach a flywheel to the shaft, it'll help take some of the load off the motor and deliver more energy into the knives
Boy its a good thing you said that stuff about this not being about making a weapon because the Penetration and range on this thing definitely disqualified as an actual weapon.
Awesome Idea! possible ideas for Knife Gun 2.0 could include a faster motor with an idler pully and belt system, similar to a tank's tracks, to grab the knives sooner with longer and more consistent contact with the knife to propel them farther.

Came to comments to suggest both of these things 👌 slap some more weight on that wheel, use a rubber substance for grip, bingo laser knives.
@@Nevir202 exactly what i was thinking!!! turn the kinetic energy of the drill into potential in the form of a flywheel of sorts, then dump it all on the knife
@@makethemdead8062 Yup, exactly.
Would also build bearings under the wheel, so that the blade will not invert the force to friction on the metal plate.
