I was lucky enough to have seen this in theaters back in '82 multiple times. I was a junior in HS, taking my girlfriend to the movies originally to see ET but thankfully it was sold out. We went to see this instead. She went to see ET with some of her friends later in the week, but I returned several more times to see The Thing with friends. Still to this day, I have never watched ET completely. IMHO, the greatest Sci-fi Horror movie of all time!!! Thanks for sharing...
One of the best movies ever made in my opinion. It's just incredible in every way. I have the collectors edition and have seen this, but I still enjoy watching it and listening to John and Kurt reliving it. Thank you for posting this. (and with no commercials!!)
I agree, it's actually hard to find fault with it. The creature special effects could've looked really silly, but it just shows with good music, sound, acting, cinematography and editing, you can make anything look and feel real. No CGI, brilliant movie. I've had lots of great ideas for a sequel over the years.
I wish John Carpenter and Kurt Russell would do commentaries for EFLA and the Elvis TV docudrama . Their commentaries are the best reason to buy the DVDs . And I hate the Hollywood studios are quitting making DVDs .
In the disection scene of the thing, I remember thinking "I know it's not real but that thing must smell horrible" and then their acting made it perfect and I almost created the smell for myself in my mind and it was terrible lol.
The grenade fail was such a grate scene. It demonstrated the Norwegians' unwavering determination to eliminate the dog to a fault of. They were going to stop the dog no matter the cost . Then with the destruction of the helicopter it eliminated a possible escape for the humans.
Ive seen hundreds of sci-fi and horror films but , ive never heard such an unearthly , terrifying scream than the one the dog-thing makes in the kennel scene . Especially the one just after Macready sounds the alarm . Awesome film .
Literally the best movie ever made! I was 13 at the time it was terrifying! I watched it at that age thinking about being scared and worried then I watched it later on in life and realised the tension and the isolation of the individuals and the realisation that it could be the end of everyone! I'm 55 now and whenever this film turns up or makes an appearance I always ask the question.... Can anyone name the 12 individual character names in this film? If they answer it then I know I will like them! 😂
My favourite film. A masterful study of paranoia and isolation in the face of horror. Hearing Carpenter and Russel talk so fondly about it is wonderful, considering how tough it was to film. Definitely a labour of love, and a technical triumph considering when it was made.
I had been working in the Oklahoma oil field for some time and got a week off , so i flew home to California. That first night i took a girl to the drive jn with a six pack and some strong weed. Niether of us had.any idea what the movie was about , it was the only drive in movie ive ever been to where not a word was spoken through the entire movie. Even when the movie ended we sat in silence until the lot was almost empty trying to figure out what we just saw!! We didnt even try to fool around in the car we were so transfixed. It even took awhile after we got home , we were still pretty spaced out.
Let’s just get this out there. Kurt Russell is one of the hottest, sexiest men in movie history. Just beautiful. His hair genes, his body shape, his laugh, and those eyes. Wow. And lest we forget… One of the biggest, baddest, scariest movies (and movie monsters) of all time.. is, John Carpenter’s, The Thing.
Later, Norbert Weisser, who played the Norwegian, was in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul (one episode each) and he's Thackary Bink's Dad in Hocus Pocus.
As I watch this I can't help but notice that parts of the commentary are missing. Does anyone who owns the DVD release notice this? Parts have been edited out since that original DVD release. I thought I was losing my mind, but I just popped in the old DVD and can confirm that some bits have been removed. Also, the audio has been rearranged. The one scene I notice this the most is the scene where Blair is in the shack with the noose. There was some extra stuff there from Carpenter that was really funny. It seemed rather harmless, but they removed it for sure.
It was difficult to watch the poor dogs attempting to tear the fence apart with their teeth so they can escape, but they're trapped... With the Thing. It's a foreshadowing of what's to come for the base personnel.

I love the mutual respect, trust and friendship these 2 have. Made my childhood amazing
This commentary is hilarious. You can tell they're really good friends and had a blast making this movie.
Great movie, loved hearing how close they were on set.

OMG this is my favorite movie ever! 🥳

The acting absolutely Sold the creature effects.
BBQ
was thinking that on a re-watch like a week ago lol

LOVE this movie. Thanks for posting this.
This is one of the few perfect movies in existence.

I always remember Windows. Like who calls a character "Windows"?
Not gonna lie, I always forget about Fuchs
I was 12 when I watched this and I was almost scared to put it in the VHS video recorder because the cover terrified me!😮
it nice to know the dog is the best actor here
That’s Jody Husky, RIP
They need to have dog oscars
Love these commentaries
i toil between this and alien for my favorite sci fi horror flick of all time. both so brilliant and different from one another.

The thing only attacks when it needs to or it needs to defend itself and that is why it didn't attack Clark,it didn't feel threatened by him.
Well, maybe. It also doesn't seem to like being in the open, being seen. If it goes after Clark right away, it's doing so when the others are around.
The thing only came to Earth to go to sleep probably and humans ended up waking it up
I still love it!

I heard a clip of this and all they did was uncontrollably laugh their assess off - I long for moments like that in life

is, John Carpenter’s, The Thing.
I feel for the Norwegian speakers who got the outline of the plot at the beginning of the film.
This is awesome
"Ah Mr Burt Reynolds and Mr Dolly Parton" like the Cheech and Chong skit.
E.T. and The Thing came out at around the same time.
I know which one I think is the better film.
Spoilers: It's this one!
They’re not even comparable lol
Later, Norbert Weisser, who played the Norwegian, was in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul (one episode each) and he's Thackary Bink's Dad in Hocus Pocus.

I can't wait to see their faces when I spring
Yes, sir
'Cause they think that I'm a dog
But I'm The Thing
just to be sure: this is the original dvd audiotrack from 98, and not the later, censored and edited 2008 rerelease for blu-ray, correct?
I never noticed John Carpenter says the word "whip" like Stewie from Family Guy
Hey Kurt, toss this real dynamite.
OK
Oatmeal commercials. 😂😂
I swear the dog scene is the worst for me lol.. humans getting ripped up by a monster no problem but not dogs!
