      @@nm9688 the first season established Midge as someone who wanted to break the mold. It was more celebratory in tone. The second has a lot of things going on, and the overall message is inconsistent. Amy Sherman Palladino could have done better. She took the first season picked all the things that worked and changed it. Though Rachel's acting made it worthwhile

    I enjoy the show, but I don’t find Midge naturally funny. Maybe because the show is scripted and the punchlines are designed to be “provocative” rather than actually funny. The show runner has a point to make: seeeeee, women can be edgy and funny tooooo! I have never LOLed at her stand up bits. She’s got a persona that should be funny. But it’s just entertaining. What’s powerful is her story about trying to break into comedy. But she’s about 30 years too late. Sally Field killed in Punchline. She was amazing-believable, and poignant. And funny!
    The one episode in Maisel that was truly funny was the one in France. But it was because she had a French woman translating-and, truth be told, SHE got the laughs.

      I totally agree. She is supposed to be getting ready to marry someone else. Someone who is supportive from the jump, loving, respectful, successful, handsome, etc...etc...Now she is cheating on her new man with the ex. When the whole reason she is no longer with the ex is because he cheated on her and left her for another woman. Now she's the cheater. I don't think this is good for the show. But here's my bet. She'll sleep with Joel. Then sleep with the doctor. Then demand to finalize the divorce from Joel so she can marry the doctor. By the time she reaches the end of the tour, she'll be super pregnant, about to pop, might even go into labor onstage. Her new husband will think he's the father but her 2nd marriage, if it happens, will end miserably when it comes out that Joel is the father.

    • @shoooop
      @shoooop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Kassh Money that’s a plausible plot line. They didn’t give Benjamin enough development which started to make me worry and my worries were confirmed in the last scene. She essentially cheated on Benjamin which is what hurt her so badly.

    • @CarrotFlowers421
      @CarrotFlowers421 5 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      Somehow you guys missed the point that was said over and over and over again in that episode: all alone. She isn't going to be with Joel or Benjamin or anybody. Cheating isn't what "hurt" her, her career choice means she isn't going to be with anybody. It doesn't matter who she's with on the last night.

    The only thing I disagree with is Sherman-Palladino’s comment that “Comedy dies slow”. My favorite moments in any comedy are generally moments of the tragic comedy. When a character is so floored by the situation they’re in and then a joke comes, intentionally from a character or otherwise. Or when the jokes are interlaced between really heavy shit. But they don’t even have to be “jokes” exactly to make me laugh and it certainly doesn’t have to be fast. Maybe in a straight comedy the comedy dies slow but in a com-dram like Maisel, it’s just not true. Luckily however Sherman Palladino knows this on some level and has some really good moments of emotion only infused with comedy and not just the other way around. Slight difference but important

    Yeah the main character's standup is really entertaining, and I really liked the pilot, but I just don't find any of the other characters in the show very compelling. They all feel very fake, as if they're only the setup for a joke.

    • @Historian212
      @Historian212 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think they all feel fake. I didn't like the show at first, then by a few episodes into the first season I started to get it: it's all stylized. It evokes an era, but at the same time it's not quite of that era (the incidental music, for example, includes songs that came after the 1950s); the colors are too bright (I was a young child in the late 50s, it wasn't like that); the dialog and characterizations are all done with a broad brush. No one really talks like that, although evoking the overlapping style is reminiscent of the way people talk -- only in an exaggerated way. It's art, not reality. So I can accept the non-realistic depiction of the characters. (A much more realistic set of characters, dialogue, art direction and costumes set primarily in the 1950s can be found in the wonderful 1990 movie "Avalon," directed by Barry Levinson. Which, now that I think about it, also features a much-younger Kevin Pollack.)

I never felt like she was really in any pain, her children are less then window dressing but in the real world would be a major concern (and I don't have children thank god).

      I think you guys are forgetting what era this takes places in. In wealthy families in this era children were kind of window dressing. People were only starting to really think about their children as we do now. And I think everyone experiences pain in their own way. Some get upset and cry and freakout and others... get angry. I personally think that this is totally the way someone like Midge would handle a situation like that. I mean, watch from the start... the character of Midge never seemed like an overly emotionally driven person. And neither really is Amy. I feel like if you've watched the Gilmore Girls, you'll know that she tends to intellectualize her feeling more so then express them.

      I definitely agree with you Finallyflowered. I found the second series not as good as the first, especially the completely boring and so hackneyed first and second programs in Paris with the parents and their problems. Also, the children...one truly still a baby, being left alone all the time, sometimes we are not even sure who is taking care of them and if anyone at all is and their mother not caring, obviously...this is so NOT true to life that perhaps it might have been better for the script if there had been no children at all as all I could think of as I watched was
      "who's taking care of the kids?" After that I did watch the third installment and quit...just not interested.

    "Sherman Palladino uses every ounce of that space to fire off her trademark pop-culture references and witty retorts." Utter bullshit. Every show on TV uses pop-culture references, and the great majority of SP's "witty retorts" aren't witty, and definitely aren't funny. This whole show relies on sleight of hand. It's supposedly about Midge's career as a standup comic, but the actual sequences of her on stage are few and far between, and if you pay attention to her patter instead of the laughter from the audience which is nothing other than a human laugh track, you will notice that her routines are about a third as funny as SP makes them out to be.
    Amy SP's real trademark is the totally intolerable minor character who makes you want to kill him with his irrational drivel and irrelevant intrusiveness. She can't make herself stop writing these characters, and the proof of it was The Gilmore Girls, in which a minor character you didn't want to throttle was almost non-existent. These characters provide her shows with a wealth of irrelevant, interminable and BORING garbage to pad her extra-long scripts with. This show is really about those repulsive characters, not about Midge's comedy.
    Sure, there's a lot of fast-paced dialog. So what? Most of it doesn't matter even to the characters themselves, let alone to the viewing audience. Saying stuff fast doesn't make it funny. I find the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to be a giant flop, so far, and I'm nearing the point of being unwilling to watch any more of Amy SP's shows at all. My tolerance for repulsive, pig-headed, buffoonish minor characters who don't have anything interesting to say or contribute and are just there for the annoyance factor is just about exhausted.

    None of the comedy in this show is funny. Comedy most certainly does not die slow. It is about timing. Speaking fast is not comedy.

    hey , I Love the show and LOVE Rachel , who doesn't ( she' got it all ) but season 2 was hard to watch at times season , so boring i wanted to fast foward but didn't cause afraid to miss one of her stand ups . . why did they have to go to Paris ? Why the Catskills especially for 2 months ; that was ridiculous and insulting to Jews the way they were depicted (only redeeming part of that was her father seeing her Act by coincidence .. we dont't need Joel anymore and especially his awful parents THEY ARE NOT NEEDED they will work again someday

      The Jewish stereotypes have been painful for me since the first episode. I get it; it's a comedy, all the characters are exaggerated. But a lot of it is cringe-worthy.

      Right, they should just pretend like the 50s weren't sexist at all. Clearly that's too much gender politics. So uncomfortable and inconvenient to even see snippets of it.

      obviously a modern show based on the 50s can’t ignore gender politics. Do show some level of rationality before typing out public comments.
