  • Many golfers underestimate just how important ball position is and how this can drastically influence your swing, the club delivery and resulting shot.
    In this video Chris uses TrackMan to highlight just what can change when the golf ball is moves around in your stance...... the results may surprise you!

    Good video Chris. I would be really interested now to see a similar video but based around the Driver. It seems the norm to have the ball off the leading heel so I would be interested to see your take on this and the effects of changing from there to mid stance with the driver👍

    Great video Chris. Where constantly told that if we put the ball to far back in or stance (for a lower shot) we would hit to much down on it and increase spin you’ve shown us that actually the attack ankle was almost level (-0.5) of the back foot. Insightful and fascinating stuff. 👏🏻

    Hello Chris, i am a one lenght player so i had ti find out on my own what ball position does to my ball flight. Result : one ball widht to the right for all my irons ( one lenght ) will create a straight flight, more often now even a Draw, your explanation was brilliant i will send your video to my buddy struggeling with that issue

    This is very well done and helpful Chris! My friends always tell me to move the ball forward in my stance and it leads to me hitting pull draws with my driver which is a bad combination. Both the narratives and images were very helpful to get me to understand these concepts.

    Always necessary. I noticed this year my ball position for me swing was moving towards my right foot (I’m right handed). I was completely lost and checked everything. I made some notes several years ago, and my ball position was way off. When I play the ball off the logo on my golf shirt I had a good strike. Thanks Chris for this timely reminder!

    Thankyou so much for this helpful insight Chris. Most book theories would just explain that shorter club, ball position would be further back and longer clubs further forward. But yes I believe in reality thats not always the case since we all have differeny body postures and swing path. Now I feel more confident in taking my ball position more towards the middle stance for longer irons (i6, i5) rather than bring it forward to the stance.

    Ball forward: Club face most likely closed at contact, with a high push to the left. Ball back: Club face likely to be open at contact and also de-lofted, creating a low fade or slice to the right.
    Edit: Love the side-by-side view showing the change in swing path with the two ball positions. Subconscious hand-eye coordination working as it should, but not necessarily with the desired results. 😄

    This is interesting and a bit counter intuitive as you say. Would like a part 2 or link to previous video of what adjustments are required in order to hit the driver with a draw despite the ball positioning being forward. I know you have done those in the past but it would just fill the gap as I doubt you would suggest hitting the driver from the middle of your stance.

    Hey Chris. I have a problem with my approach/wedge shots as they almost always go too high yet go straight. My ball position I have been told is to put the ball very close to the right foot. Is my problem either the ball position (should I place more left), or is it my swing where I subconciously try to “scoop” the ball because of the loft in the wedge? I don’t typically have this problem with the rest of my irons.

  • @sas949

    Great video. I like the science behind it. I’m left handed and my issue is this ; 3 hybrid common misses to left of target, 5 hybrid misses to the right. The only difference I can see between these clubs (besides the loft) is the shaft length. The 3 is about 2 inches longer.
    What’s causing my misses ?

  • @tombeach1262

    Ben Hogan says to place the ball 1 inch inside the left heel and adjust the position of the right foot (narrower stance and closer to the ball the shorter the club). So with the driver the stance would be closed in respect to the target lline, square with a mid iron and open with a wedge. Is that a viable method in your opinion?

    • @ChrisRyanGolf

      No there are just two ways of setting the ball position, constant and variable, they are both good and the results will be the same there is just an adjustment in stance width with the constant ball position

    • @ChrisRyanGolf

      Tough one Anthony as moving it back should straighten them out a touch.... but they may fly far too low and lose distance. I’d keep the call forwarded and work a little on path with the driver 👍

  • @johnmckechnie3294
    @johnmckechnie3294 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When i was taking divots behind the ball, I experimented with moving ball in my stance. I found back would be open clubface, sending ball right, and forward, the clubface would be closed sending ball left of target. I'm still working on correct fix which is correct weight transfer.
    Thanks for the great instructional vids.

    • @liquidmocofilmsllc4915
      @liquidmocofilmsllc4915 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is exactly what should happen. Instructors that teach that the ball will fade or draw are manipulating the face open or close relative to the swing path. As you stated, if you keep your swing arc and bottom of your swing exactly the same, the ball will exactly what you described. Exactly.
      I have yet to find a video that gets this right which just blows my mind.
      If you put your ball excessively back or forward in your stance keeping the same swing arc, you will top the ball both ways, back in stane top to the right, front top to the left.
      These guys are changing their swing paths and clubfaces and not telling you the truth.

    So in general should most of your irons be around the middle of your stance then?
    I’m getting a stronger draw and sometimes a nice little draw. Especially off the tee with my irons. Not using driver at the moment. I’m hitting my 6. Ping i59 x stiff shaft. I’m playing it a little ahead of middle stance. My 7 the other day I played center stance a few times and had a small draw. I have been told my swing is a natural draw or something. Going to test all at the range in middle. PW to 60* I play from rear heel to behind center point. I always thought 7 was middle and as you climbed down you went further back in stance and then opposite you gent forward in stance

  • @qd5683
    @qd5683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The most successful golfer of all time - Jack Nicklaus, said, “Play every shot off the inside of your left heel - just take a wider stance for driver and a narrower stance as the club becomes more lofted.” He then made the same swing for every club. Sounds like simple advice to me. Fades and draws can then be achieved by opening and closing the club face and stance.

      @ChrisRyanGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jamie, a ball position which moves around would be the same as a static ball position with a changing of the stance width. Both work well and will create the same relationships so it’s just whichever the golfers feels more comfortable with 👍

      Dave Weedall it’s not as hard as you think to hit a draw. In your mind it’s bigger than it should be so get some practice and once you actually get it you’ll see what I’m talking about. Fade =aim right swing left. Aim left swing right or out to right field. The trick to it is taking a small swing with quiet hands and letting your shoulder turn back nice and wide and then from the top Swing down your toe line. You got a put the work in on the range though and it takes practice

    Ball position forward will mean swing path more left. You will have to shift your weight through transition to maintain a neutral face to path relationship. Attack angle will be -1 to 0 at best. Ball flight depending on strike slight pull to a gentle fade for your skillset. Opposite for ball position back. Swing path more in to out to the right. Attack angle -6 or more, face to path closed to swing path, ball flight again depending on strike slight push to slight draw.

    I know that when I play the ball too far forward, I almost always pull it dead left with a draw. When I play it too far back, I hit it fat and skittle it along the ground forwards ..or hit it dead right low. Mildly back or forward, no more than a ball either way, I can use it to play a lower shot, or a higher shot varying heights with different clubs. Also, depends if I aim for the dead center back of the ball or the slight inside of the back of the ball .. or the slight outside of the back of the ball.

    Forward will cause a hook and back may cause low and right ball flight

    I move the ball back like one ball length to hit a punch or knockdown. I move the ball forward one ball length for anything over a 6 iron. They stay straight and fly well. No need to get excessive. Small adjustments work the best.

    Ball on the front foot will create a high shot and the ball on the back foot will create a low shot. The shot shape will depend on the clubface in relation to the swing path.

    If you are hitting on the toe move the ball back. If on the heel move the ball forward. Find where your swing bottoms. Sounds simple but it has worked for me.

    I think the ball forward position will be topped or high and weak
    The ball back position will be low and left with a lot of run

    Up front it will shorten the distance and heighten the flight and left. If way back it will be longer less height and go left.

    way front will give you s harder time to get your impact position right and it can end up in thin shots or behind the ball striking.
    mid is much better and the way back is to steep and top the ball and very low shot difficult to stop the ball.

    I play with guys that play both extremes, the ball back guy is low and hooky starts right and overturns. Guy with ball forward high and slicy starts left and overfades..

    My guess is, as a total beginner and from the few beginner youtube videos I have seen, in either extreme position you would still cut the turf in between your legs but miss either ball. Or maybe, with the ball in front of the target foot, you might slice it and the ball would shoot out along the ground but have no flight.
