Thank you for posting this. I had it recorded on VHS. My father recorded over it. The wy the crowd adored Panetta was very moving. A great moment in track & field.
I have always loved this race. How exhilarating Panetta winning before the Italian crowd after "only" getting the silver to Kipkoech in the 10,000. The crowd serenading him afterwards is wonderful.
The turning point in establishing the current Kenyan dominance in the steeplechase. It was already a great Kenyan tradition but they were terrible that night; one of them even fell over trying to hurdle, and you never saw that in the early days of Biwott/Keino/Jipcho. This embarrassed the Kenyans so much that they were determined it would never happen again, and from 1988 onwards it never has.

Have you ever run it?

A great strong man’s race
This is the last time to date that a non-Kenyan-born athlete won a major championship final in the men's steeplechase.
One of my favorite races ever. Panetta winning in front of a home crowd, singing his name throughout the race.
That was awful time or Kenya!
