Paul Ruto's upset victory in the 800m. Ruto was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb for his more fancied teammates, Olympic Champion William Tanui and two time defending World Champion Billy Konchellah, but Ruto refused to follow the script and took the lead and never relinquished it.

What in the world was Konchellah thinking with those tactics? He was dead last until about 150 meters out. Even if Ruto had dropped back in favor of his teammates, D’Urso still beat him at the line. What a strange strategy

He never quite had the class to compete at World/Olympic level. He was brilliant at out kicking inferior runners in slow races but as soon as the top runners upped the pace early on in a race it was all he could do to try and keep up with them.
