    1 - stretch yourself: practice reading quicker and your brain will intuitively get more efficient at reading!
    2 - play some music: preferably without lyrics and maybe classical (baroque, as it helps activate Alpha brain waves) so that it drowns out your internal voice.
    3 - replace the habit: say random words to yourself, chew gum, or count (keeps pace as well) in order to manually override your brains nature to read back the words in your head.
    Keep practicing and your brain will get better naturally through consistent and conscious practice! #leadersarereaders

    Being a non-native speaker presents a challenge when it comes to all the language skills, reading in particular while competing with people who've spoken the language all their lives. Thanks again for the podcast!

    Top tips to reading faster from Jim:
    1. stretch yourself - read faster so brain does not look for distractions
    2. play music (without lyrics) to enter Alpha state, possibly avoid subvocalizations
    3. pattern interrupt - give mouth something else to do to avoid subvocalization, ie. hum, chew gum or count;
    4. practice fixation - focus to see the whole word or even a couple of words togeather, as opposed to seeing letters.
    5. take a class - learn to read, practice, exercise
    bonus from previous episodes: use visual pacer (finger or pen) to keep moving target for the eyes.

    It is so hard not to speak it in my head. And I have a hard time using the counting method and retaining what I’m trying to read. Also I notice I hold my breath when I force myself not to speak the words in my head lol

      @@tuni3226 when looking at a line of words you essentially say 1, 2 or 3 depending on where you are on the line. So if you are midway through the line you say 2 and when you're near the end say 3 in your head. I found it useful personally.

    1-read faster than usual, strech yourself makes brain more efficient
    2- Play music preferably without lyrics (baroquet)
    3-replace the habit of speaking each word by doing stuff to keep your moth busy like chewing gum,biting nails(a no no method),humming
    4- teach the things you read will help you retain stuff efficiently

    1. Conciously force yourself to read faster.
    2. Distract yourself using humming, music, or counting numbers.
    3. Take Jim's free couse to improve😂.

    Dyslexia surviver here! I read fiction really fast, but when I have to read anything technical or with specific vocabulary, my reading time and comprehension crash from having to work harder to read the material. Any tips to help with this?

    • @KingFiveHead
      @KingFiveHead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Disengage that negative thought pattern of thinking your comprehension is crashing and it's so hard.
      Focus instead on comprehending the material and don't worry about your speed, it makes perfect sense that technical information would take a bit longer to process and digest, and the only way to read that kind of thing faster is to start understanding it. Take your time, slow is fast.

    At first this seemed impossible, but the more I push myself the better I get. I picked a book that I don't mind destroying and began scanning each line start to finish while counting to 3. I moved fast enough where if I tried to pronounce a word in my head it got cut off as I moved on. I went from 26 lines a minute to around 40 but my comprehension isn't there yet but it is slowly catching up. Take your time and work on making sure your eye is hitting each word in the line and keep pushing forward. If your eye only caught 1-3 words on the last line, that's alright, keep trying. Eventually your brain will register the meaning of the words without you having to pronounce them in your head. You will lose comprehension. The point is to ditch comprehension then work at getting it back slowly at this new speed.

    • @maceawilder
      @maceawilder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, if you find yourself pronouncing the words anyways then you are not reading fast enough. You should be reading faster than you can pronounce.

  • @laurabethashley1

    What do you suggest if you are trying this method but don't seem to be retaining the info as well?

  • @mattseymour6977
    @mattseymour6977 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I find it impossible to retain anything without subvocalization. Even if I do it fast I feel like I still have to do it. How do I stop sunvocalization even slow at first?

    • @CuriousFascination
      @CuriousFascination 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      He did say that this practice will be distracting at first. But your brain will eventually adapt. Do everything within your mental power to focus on retaining the info, while *not* subvocalizing, and you will eventually learn it. It's uncomfortable at first, it's hard, a battle. But that's how you grow, by struggling. So many people never win, because they are not willing to deal with the uncomfortable struggle it takes to win. If you want to develop a "being comfortable with the uncomfortable" mindset, then I suggest taking an ice cold shower every day. Not only does have a huge amount of both mental and physical benefits, but it also helps you develop a winning mindset. Hope this helps ☺

      Try this. Pick a book you don't care so much about, so the pressure is off. Go through the book faster than you can understand. Maybe 5 seconds a page. Don't even try to comprehend. Do ten pages or so, then take a moment to ask yourself if you remembered anything. Any random words stick in your memory? Any idea what was going on in the story? Ten more pages, then reflexion. Keep doing this. You'll get more of it over time, and if you back off the speed a bit, you'll lose the subvocalization. It takes more work than some guy selling shit on the interwebs lets on, but you'll get it.

    • @spanglelime
      @spanglelime 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Omar Q I'm not sure this necessarily true. I watched the MindValley masterclass, not buying the course bc no money but I wanted to learn something, and they spoke about this in the FAQ. Apparently someone who had been taught to speed read says he now experiences the books in a different way, it's on a far deeper level, he can feel the sand under his feet, hear the waves and smell the gross caught fish scent. The imagination goes deeper bc you're able to flow through. What I worry about is that I want to get a lot faster, but I proofread so I can't JUST read and allow my brain to fix the mistakes naturally. I have to pick them out one by one and fix them. I think I can do it, but it's gonna be a rough ride.
      I haven't read for pleasure in a long time bc I love to read and I know I'd rather read a book than stare at a legal deposition. And I still can't stop myself from picking apart other writing now, I find mistakes or awkward wording by habit now. Don't become a proofreader unless you enjoy or can't help finding the mistakes. 😆

      👋hi! You count the lines you've read in a minute or two. You count how many words 3 lines of what you read have and calculate the average of words per line. Multiple that number of words by the lines and divide by time. Normally it's 10 words per line.

    Try to see the words as symbols of ideas. Do away with the need to vocalize them in your mind while reading. For e.g. you do not say "Question mark" when you see "?" symbol. You see it, you know what it means, you do not vocalize it internally, and you move on.

      No just keep doing it , until your brain make a habit of intuitive reception . It's a muscle not a technique

    Jim, I have a question, what would it mean, when I'm reading instead of using my voice I use other people's voices or memories voices that can fit with the character that I'm reading in my book?; Does it mean I have something wrong?
