This is a 1973 interview. Years later, Pelé improoved his English skills. He learned the language when he played for New York Cosmos from 1975 to 1977. He was able to speak English, Spanish and Portuguese. R.I.P., Pelé.
It was also from the first of a three-week return visit to New York (only one year after "The Tonight Show" made the move to Burbank) which would prove to be Johnny's last. After that set of shows, 6B which was the show's New York home since the early '60's would be gutted and transformed into the set for WNBC-TV's "NewsCenter4."
In 1986, I had the opportunity to speak with Pelé for a few minutes in the presence of my two young sons, who were 12 and 10 years old at the time. After discussing football for a couple of minutes, Pelé did something that left a lasting impression on my sons and me. Despite not being a tall man, he knelt down and looked my sons in the eyes, asking their names and if they were going to school and practicing any sports. He also told them to love their parents and teachers. Today, my sons are close to 50 and still consider Pelé to be the greatest sportsman in the world, not just because of his exceptional football skills, but also because of his humility. Johnny Carson was so kind and patient to hear our king…he tries as much as possible to extract a really good conversation from it, even speaking some spanish. It is impossible to presence this level of interviews nowadays along with those “hosts”, thinking every second how to interrupt their guests successfully
Todays late night talk hosts wouldn't have survived 5 minutes of this kind of interview. Pele at this time wasn't that fluent in English but Johnny put him at ease and conducted a very stellar and entertaining interview. R.I.P. Pele and Johnny!
This is an example of why Johnny Carson was such a class act. He didn’t need to prove himself to anyone, but he took his job so seriously that he made this interview work and interesting despite the language gap!
Also, to underscore how difficult the feats Pele was executing were, he made his sincere best effort to duplicate the feat. This was very impressive to me.
I consider Pele the greatest soccer player that has ever lived on the planet. He was quick on the ball, diligent, intelligent, with killer instinct while scoring goals, and very humble. I doubt if we can ever get a player of his class ever again. There may be soccer players like him, but not the same as him. May the soul of King Pele rest in peace, Amen
Great guest appearance by Pelé! At first I wondered why they didn't simply use an interpreter, but it turns out better that they did not - despite the language gap they interacted beautifully. It seemed like a very short 15 minutes. Pelé will remain the greatest of all time in soccer. He not only did it first, he did it better than anyone. May he rest in peace.

Johnny talks to him a little bit in Spanish and Pelé understands that’s the beauty of Spanish and Portuguese, they’re very similar. Through out the years Pelé learned English very well.
As a Brazilian I'm amazed to see Pelé being able to communicate in English even though you can clearly see that his language level at the time was a beginner level. What a lovely man Carson seemed to be, the patience and respect he gave to Pele shows what type of man he was.
I saw Pele‘s last game as a professional in 1977 in Portland Oregon when the New York Cosmos played the Seattle Sounders. He was amazing even at the end of his career in my eyes!
I loved him as a player but even more for the warmth of his personality.
77, he didn't play until 79?
@@deutugal I believe, its 75-77 with Cosmos.
What a great experience.
Loved that Cosmos song by AWB. Managed to catch some of the televised matches. It was a joy to have him in the US for a while.
Nicely said!👍

Also, to underscore how difficult the feats Pele was executing were, he made his sincere best effort to duplicate the feat. This was very impressive to me.

I consider Pele the greatest soccer player that has ever lived on the planet. He was quick on the ball, diligent, intelligent, with killer instinct while scoring goals, and very humble.

Even without speaking so much english he was good in this interview... His charisma made up for the lacking english. At a time it was very difficult for a brazilian to study another language. Pelé did a real show!
I'm from Brazil and I really enjoy watching Johnny Carson, who I also consider the King of television, even though I'm not from the US and didn't have the opportunity to see his shows when they were shown on television.
