Yeah man, probably the most prolific movie in terms of all things mentioned of my childhood. Being that internet access and info was limited for a kid, it was like new content kept spawning out of thin air. Toys, games, collectables. It was neat!
For me, Episode 1 can't be separated from the hype of the release and the mountain of merch and advertising that came with it. It was everywhere, truly everywhere. That black-border-red-rim-gold-font aesthetic with a dash or two of green will always have a warm place in my heart. It was what is was: a kids adventure movie with an overarching story for adults and an introduction to a wider universe for nerds like me to dive into. I still love watching it.
People talk a lot about how much hype there was ahead of TFA coming out, but I had lived through Episode I and there is absolutely zero comparison. Sure, there was some tie-in merchandising in stores, but not nearly as omnipresent. The toys were few and had unappealing designs, on the video game front there was nothing sequel-related. And Episode I was freaking everywhere. I think much of it is due to the fact that the Internet was little more than just a bunch of digital newspapers, you really needed to be out there to make people take notice, whether they wanted to or not. In contrast, if, for example, you never watched any movie-related content on YT, it was all less likely for the algorithm to feed you a TFA commercial. I think marketing agencies still treat the Internet as a single entity, not appreciating just how separated many communities can get from one another and how easy it is to avoid content you aren't interested in to begin with. It's not like television, which was the primary medium back in 1999.

@@boingaonLol. Never have I seen such a perfect example of rose tinted glasses. If you were an adult back in 1999, I wonder if you'd still be wax poetic?
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e No doubt. We love the film not necessarily because it’s a good movie, but for the experiences it created in 1999 and the following few years. It was a hell of a ride.
This game had one of the weirdest cheat code to me: you could access translated versions of the game by entering cheat codes. As a french kid, I did not understand why I couldn't recognize any word until I looked up the cheats, su ch a weird way of handling localization. It even had a droid language where all the text and voice acting is replaced by "roger roger".
I’m gonna have to take issue with the fact that both Toy Story Racer and Muppet RaceMania were on that final splash screen. Those are damn fine racers if I do say so myself.
The era of the star wars crazy merchandise was incredible, this is a product from there and looks quite good. I wasn't into wacky kart racing games back in the day sadly, as I even bought the star wars demolition for ps1 and enjoyed the hell out of it, this could be better
after seeing this I kinda want a remaster to include all 9 episodes with 9 tracks each for a total of 27 circuits expected character racers included...
Imagine how different the world would be if this game was super successful. Getting sequels for episode II and III followed by an original trilogy game. There could be an alternate timeline where instead of everyone being hyped about battlefront coming back they were all celebrating the glorious return of bombad racing.
Hell yeah, love waking up to a new one of your vids. Did you play Star Wars Droid Works growing up? It's crazy that they only ever made one of those. I can still hear the little disco song from it that makes your droid dance lol
I remember I got my dad to buy me a used copy of this at GameStop when I was younger because I saw it and really wanted to play it but then I got home with it and the disc didn't work and that was the only copy so I had to get another game. :(
We already got Episode I: Racer, so what we truly need is a Racer's Revenge multiplatform rerelease. Doing such to... this game would be like wasting time on another Turok 3 remaster or perhaps even that recent The Thing video game remaster.
Flandrew, thank you for this. I love this game. Its so silly and it works so well. That said, the big fish in the Otoh Gunga level is literllay the biggest fear of my childhood
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if any Star Wars game needs a spritual sequel for modern consoles, it's this one. I mean, come on, I can't be the only person who sees the appeal of racing as cartoony, big-headed versions of all the major Star Wars characters from across the franchise on tracks inspired by iconic locations from the movies and TV shows!
I've heard about this game from a Star Wars Encyclopedia. Never realized it was so controversial. Super Bombad Racing's just a paint-by-numbers kart racer. You can take it or leave it.
Another random star wars game i would love you to look at is star wars demolition on the ps1. I think enjoyed it as a kid but have a feeling it wasn't very good haha
bring back goofy star wars racers! My biggest hope currently is the Episode 1 Racer decomp project, which is extremely active, but its also a one man show, making it even more impressive. One day we will have a better version than Switch
Good look. Never played, but when I saw it I thought hmm probably ok Kart Racer but the details are really something, very good track ideas, interesting take on the soundtrack, and Darth Vader/Palpatine foreshadowing in an Episode 1 game hmm. It looks great. Not something I would expect but a lot was put into it and the charm is there.
What!? The McDonalds toys that nobody wanted actually were part of a real canonical thing? Ant they were in fact the children between the marriage of the Ep1 Racer and Mario Kart, that’s an interesting thing to know
The game is silly… but honestly, it’s gotten fair criticism over the years. Having replayed this fairly recently, SBR isn’t that great overall. It’s a neat fun distraction for a little while, but nothing to go nuts over.
I adore Episode I. Experiencing the film, toys, games, and cultural impact as a child is something I will never forget. What an adventure.
Yeah man, probably the most prolific movie in terms of all things mentioned of my childhood. Being that internet access and info was limited for a kid, it was like new content kept spawning out of thin air. Toys, games, collectables. It was neat!
Shame the movie sucks as an adult.
The marketing machine really worked on you, huh?
@@alienizedgodzilla Nah. It's still amazing as an adult. In fact, I think it's even better now than when I watched it when I was younger.

If only the Dreamcast, Windows and Mac OS ports weren't cancelled; it'd possibly be remembered more if it was on 4 platforms instead of 1.
4:38 The old woman's name is Jira, and Warick Davis played Weazel, who later returns in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The guy who does very Scottish Obi-Wan is also the guy voices Sebulba.
Okay, now I NEED Flandrew to cover every racing licensed game there is

Perhaps they didn't have time to fully polish the translation and thus dummied it out for the most part?
I’m gonna have to take issue with the fact that both Toy Story Racer and Muppet RaceMania were on that final splash screen. Those are damn fine racers if I do say so myself.
Never played it, though those tracks are absolute BANGERS
Absolutely loved this game as a kid who got pretty much all the Star Wars games for ps2. We didn’t have KOTOR but thank god we had bombad racing 💀
I loved that game when I was a kid I wouldn’t even race I’d basically drive around looking at stuff and look for shortcuts and secrets
The era of the star wars crazy merchandise was incredible, this is a product from there and looks quite good. I wasn't into wacky kart racing games back in the day sadly, as I even bought the star wars demolition for ps1 and enjoyed the hell out of it, this could be better
I ❤ obscure Star Wars games
Never thought I'd see Vader dabbing
Welcome to the internet.
There seems to be more love, care and fun then most modern games
I’ll always defend this game 😂 I bought it 10$ at Academy (when they sold games) in the early 00s.
i remember renting this a video store
after seeing this I kinda want a remaster to include all 9 episodes with 9 tracks each for a total of 27 circuits expected character racers included...
Jedi Power Battles is getting one, so who knows this one might too.
Loved that one! The OST is AMAZING! And long live scottish Obi -Wan!
Imagine how different the world would be if this game was super successful. Getting sequels for episode II and III followed by an original trilogy game. 8:29 Oh no, you did NOT put Toy Story Racer in with all that garbage. You finally had a bad take.
Muppets Racemania is also pretty good, if I recall correctly.
And Muppets Race Mania
I can tell you with 100% certainty that I would have more fun playing this than SW Outlaws
With each early 2000s Star Wars game covered, we get closer and closer to a proper Galactic Battlegrounds review.
As a massive Star Wars kid at the time, I dreaded my parents wrongly getting this for me as a Christmas gift in 2001 over Star Fighter
I really hope this gets added to the list of Star Wars games getting their own remasters like Jedi power battles and the phantom menace game
I own and enjoy this game! I had fun beating the Grand Prix and unlocking Darth Vader.
This made me chuckle, I needed a good laugh tonight so thank you Flandrew.
Hell yeah, love waking up to a new one of your vids. Did you play Star Wars Droid Works growing up? It's crazy that they only ever made one of those. I can still hear the little disco song from it that makes your droid dance lol
Yoda doesn’t need a vehicle, he uses the Force. lol
Haha, true, but even Sonic has a car in his racing games! It's just tradition, Massa Yoda!
I remember I got my dad to buy me a used copy of this at GameStop when I was younger because I saw it and really wanted to play it but then I got home with it and the disc didn't work and that was the only copy so I had to get another game. :(
I remember playing this game ina friend's house who owned a ps2, also the tom and Jerry beat em' up game

"The lady whose bones are aching." I knew exactly who you meant even before seeing the image! How did either of us remember that?
Obi wan yehawing into a sarlac pit right after jar jar waa just what I needed
I swear that some of the music from this game sound like they came straight out of a Crash Bandicoot game
This was apparently originally planned for the Dreamcast and PC. After GTA III, this needs to be ported to the DC.
Brooooo I forgot I had this game

Probably one of the more bizarre products that came out of episode 1
I have always loved this game!
4:55 😊
This game was absolutely BOMBAD
The only PS2 Star Wars game I don't yet have.
Id love to play this
Another random star wars game i would love you to look at is star wars demolition on the ps1. I think enjoyed it as a kid but have a feeling it wasn't very good haha

Honestly, I think if they made a new one, it could be a fun time
That's not Obi-wan, that's the guy from The Room!
Homie said “us Europeans really hate sebulba” 😂😂😂
Cool version of Duel of Fates.
What!? The McDonalds toys that nobody wanted actually were part of a real canonical thing? Ant they were in fact the children between the marriage of the Ep1 Racer and Mario Kart, that’s an interesting thing to know
I like Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing
Boss Nass seems like a weird choice as one of the main playable characters. I wonder why they did not choose C-3PO, R2 or even Qui-Gon instead.
It's weirder that Yoda's there, considering he only had two scenes in the entire movie and didn't do anything.
This game would have been significantly cooler if it didn't limit itself to nearly only Episode 1 locations and characters.
That Ewan McGregor impression makes my ears cry
You should do empire at war
When are you going to do more Dragon Ball games?
Imagine if we had these short games cycle for Sequel triolgy. Imagine Super Bombad Last Jedi Racing. Or Rouge one Splinter Cell
The game is silly… but honestly, it’s gotten fair criticism over the years. Having replayed this fairly recently, SBR isn’t that great overall. It’s a neat fun distraction for a little while, but nothing to go nuts over.
Jontron being genuinely bewildered that this game exists in Starcade is probably the most exposure this game ever got
I’d love to see flandrew cover those shitty tie-in games personally 🤷
I 'member
😁
Hi
Flandrew > Bombastic
I was not a fan of this 😅
Oh man this game sucks bad.
I swear that some of the music from this game sound like they came straight out of a Crash Bandicoot game
