Identify the Differences between Respiratory Distress and Failure

  • A common question we get is when to use the nasal cannula vs when to use the non-rebreather mask to deliver oxygen. This is a discussion of the differences between respiratory distress and respiratory failure. Don't forget about our advanced tools as well! On the BLS side, we have supraglottic airways where we unfortunately have to wait until our patient is experiencing respiratory arrest. On the ALS side, some protocols allow RSI which would sedate and paralyze our patient's muscles so we can attempt to intubate or insert a supraglottic airway device.
