  • Hey all,
So, like Haze, this is another “outtake” piece i.e. a shorter piece built around melodic material that didn’t fit anywhere else.
But if I can elaborate on this a little: so sometimes the material I have suggests a slightly different sound world to the one I am currently working in - Shift in this case - (so was* working in I guess) but one that is compelling enough to warrant its own piece and this was the case for the repeating ostinato figures in Haze and this one (I sometimes think of it as a producer acknowledging a member of a band as being distinctive enough in their own right to deserve a solo career).
Naturally these ostinato-based works tend to be shorter and more focused so the repetition doesn’t get too annoying (incidentally, I’m quite happy in hindsight with how the predominance of minor seconds/half-steps in the ostinato manages to make Haze feel “darker” than the other pieces despite having the same chord progression).
Finally, I was going to apologise about these deviations and for not staying on track with the main series but for a series called ‘Lost in Thought’ I actually consider it all quite satisfyingly appropriate haha. Furthermore, many of my works in the past haven’t sufficiently explored the material and the full potential of many ideas has been left unfulfilled and so part of the goal with this series (even if it does try my patience every now and then) is to be as deliberate/thorough as I consider necessary.
Thank you all, I hope you enjoy and “see” you soon!
