    I worked on OV-10's in the Navy, pre VAL-4, Aviation Ordnance. You either love the thing or hate it. I loved it. VAL-4 went on to do much more than "forward air control" Thanks for your service, Gary, and your love for the OV-10. ;-)

    I have read an excellent book dealing with OV 10 ops in Vietnam, entitled 'A lonely Kind of War' by Marshall Harrison.
    An excellent, well written story, full of interesting detail. Believe me, Mr Harrison pulls no punches!
    A nice back-up to Capt Goff's memories!

    Hi Gary, enjoyed watching your video. I flew the OV-10 in Vietnam in 1968. I agree, it was a fun airplane to fly. The fighter pilots loved it as a FAC aircraft. I was a member of the USAF OV-10 Combat Evaluation Team (Combat Bronco) and had the privilege of flying the first USAF combat mission in the OV-10 in Vietnam. The Marines beat me by several weeks. As a matter of interest, we could carry our own flares for night missions. It worked very well. Keep up the great interviews.

    Not enough love for the OV-10s and their pilots. The US gave, loaned (probably gave) some to South American governments during the War on Drugs. I had some interesting conversations with one of those pilots. This was the mid 90s. Purely observation models that were fully armed.

    Yeah I can emphasize with him learning "grunt talk." I was a 0311 in Iraq during the opening invasion of OIF in '03 and back again in '04 during the 1st battle of Fallujah .When you're grunt I really didn't think that I was actually expected to be able to do CAS 9 line or call in a medic evac as a PFC. It took a little while to get it, but I was able to do a little bit less push-ups after.

    Would love to have an OV-10 and make it like a flying Sprinter van. Add bike racks and racks to hold luggage and gear. Fly it wherever you want to go, rent ground transport and off you go.

    • @cageordie
      @cageordie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Shorter ground roll than a Twin Otter, it says here takeoff to 50ft is 1120 feet compared to 1200 for the Twin Otter. That cargo space is a real bonus, and you get visibility no other twin has. Still, not exactly a candidate for the STOL drags, or the STOL competitions, but way better than any common aircraft that isn't a lightweight two seat tail dragger with tundra tires.

    Hi Mike,
    It's nice to see an interview about one of the less high profile aircraft in the NATO inventory. In a similar vein, if I could I'd like to make a suggestion. In this interview you had an opportunity to ask about the T-37 Tweet, in previous ones with USN aviators you've had the opportunity to talk about the T-2 Buckeye, but you seem to pass over them to get to the higher performance advanced trainers. You've had UK pilots talk about Bulldogs, Chipmunks, Provosts and so forth, but I haven't really seen US pilots talking about their basic trainers like the T-2, T-37, T-28, T-39 (for those moving on to transports/patrol/tankers) and the like.
    Could you ask about these basic trainers? The basic questions really, how did they fly, strengths and weaknesses, especially as trainers, were then enjoyable, etc. The T-2 and T-37 in particular trained generations of USN and USAF pilots respectively, but I don't recall anyone going in to much detail on them. I've heard the T-2 with its two engines was a good lead in to the F-14, and the T-37 had a particularly annoying high pitched engine whine, but not from the horse's mouth, as it were.
    Thanks
