  • Welcome to Coggeshall! A quaint, idealic town in Essex full of History.
Walk with me as I explore this superb ancient market town starting from the Grange Barn and Abbey right through to the stunning 'Dick Nunn's Bridge'.
Along the way I connect with some brilliant local characters and learn about the famous 'coggeshall job' (which is now hopefully resigned to history haha)
    Enjoy!

No idea how many times I took the 70 bus as a commuter through Coggeshall 1976/80, or wondered around the town on a Sunday visit back 47+ years ago.
I think back then there was not a cafe in sight in the town, and only pubs on restricted hours.
On a Sunday it seemed to be totally dead., with the residents hiding.
I don't think there was a museum back then, and I think I actually saw that Coggeshall Post Office sign in place on the Post Office back then too.
It was a dustbowl of a town/village as there was dust and dirt on the pavement and up against the old buildings everywhere from the constant traffic. The through traffic was, and probably still is, terrible.
Back then only some of the buildings had been modernized, and it was actually a cheaper place to buy period property than Braintree, Dunmow or Braintree etc. back then, because of the constant traffic.
Paycockes was always closed. Tried many times to see inside and I think it may have been privately owned back then?
I was very surprised to hear the locals and the NT guide pronounce it as Paycockes as "PayCOCKs",
as we were always firmly told by locals to pronounce without the "K" as "Paycoes".
Personally convinced that Coggeshall goes back to, at least, Roman times being situated on a junction on Stane Street.
You can also see that at least the Parish church has Roman tegulae roof tiles in its masonry, perhaps reused from a neighboring ruin?
! Had little/no idea of almost everything you saw and discovered about Coggeshall Adam!
You found so many beautiful places and people.
Totally, totally changed my impressions of a dirty boring over trafficked place!
Thank you Adam. Brilliant! Well done!
For me the best of your videos so far.
I have seen so far, but why did you not sample a cafe or a pub there?
Going to look and see if you have done Dunmow now...

I’ve heard lots of silly stories about people from Coggeshall from years ago. One is that they built a wall with grass cuttings around the village to keep the plague out. And that one guy tried to rake the moon out of the river. It’s also supposed to be haunted because of the ley lines.

As an ex resident, this is a lovely village to live in, haunted yes, witches were burnt at the stake there. Also years ago the water was supposedly brushed back into the river. Good to see the place again.

Grateful to have visited a few times. Lovely place. The Coggeshalls left in 1632 when they emigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony on the ship the Lyon. They were thrown out of Boston because of the Antinomy Controversy and bought Aquidneck Island from the Narraganset Indians and founded Rhode Island. The famous theologian John Owen (Chaplain to Oliver Cromwell) was pastor of the Anglican church in Coggeshall.
