Wouldn't the side of the leg be covered by the shield? That could explain the side slits, so that you have no opening in the front where the shield can be bypassed?

How about the continuation of the older style of tunic...the sleeveless baggy style...the military were not using them in the 5th c?
I have a video out on the square older style tunics. There is not much evidence of their use in military context in the 4th and 5th centuries.
