    My dog _loved_ CheezIts. She knew the box by sight. The sound of the inner wrapper summoned her from across the house. We called her the cheese hound. So, we know Kyle is a rock hound... ;)

      Sounds like my daughter. Not about Cheez-its specifically, but If we ever were in the kitchen getting a snack, she'd magically appear right behind us. She had a sense for snacks.

      I think it's fun to go out hunting with other people because everyone finds different things interesting. My son in law looks at rocks from a geological perspective, while I look at them from a lapidary perspective. Kyle loves fossils, so he had a different focus than I did.

  • @teeteepalooza

    The aerial footage of the sink hole is like 🤯. I’m going to pretend a deep water monster lives in there. His name is Gustav Klimt. 4:50 That’s a sloth face! 6:50 is fascinating…stunning! The little canoe shaped rock was cool. One could use it to display small rocks like puddingstones etc. Kyle seems like such a sweet young man.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I usually call Kyle, "sweet young man". He loves it when I do that. I'll have to remember to call Gustav by name next time I paddle over him.

    LOL both Cheez-its and Mt Dew are beloved to me! Another great share, Rob, you and Kyle make a fun team to watch. No idea how I missed this one, but made up for it today. That water was mesmerizing and a sinkhole never fails to impress. What a great adventure and looks like you had excellent company Rob. My kayak would have sunk from all the rocks I would have to keep for sure. The boat rock would have been a great display for a small succulent plant or two. Thanks for sharing!

    Good afternoon Rob, nice to see Bill’s place again! Long time fantasy of mine is to own a natural cave but one just large enough to not attract attention. Bill has part of that going on. I have a live creek that attracts copious wildlife but no rocks. The sinkhole does a good job preserving the wood it’s grabbed. Thanks for sharing Rob, shout-out to Kyle, you guys stay safe.

    • @MichiganRocks

      Hey John. Bill does have a couple small caves. His son went into one a bit, but it sounds like you have to squeeze in a pretty small area. There's no huge cavern underneath as far as I know.

    Always an awesome collaboration when you guys get together! You have inspired me to show off some of the deep sinkhole springs near where I rockhound... I'm not sure how I will work that into a video but southern Missouri has some similar sink holes that are even deeper like 300 feet or so I think! I love sinkholes. They're really interesting to me because we don't have many exposed rock faces here like I can see in a sinkhole. My videos on just looking at sinkholes have not done very well, but I do like to incorporate them into a video like this when I can.

    Great stuff. Already saw Kyle's. Why is there a sink hole? Meteorite? Glacier? That ground out "boat" looks like a First Nation tool. TFS your adventures. 💖💔🏏🎸

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sink holes form in karst topography. The bedrock here is limestone, which erodes leaving voids beneath the ground. When those cave in, you get a sinkhole. Here's a page about some local sinkholes: caves.org/conservancy/mkc/
      I don't think that was an artifact. I looked at it for a long time thinking about whether it might be or not. The inside and sides of the "boat" were much rougher than the bottom of the "boat". I'd think if it was a tool of some sort, the inside would be worn smooth. I also couldn't figure out what tool this could possibly be. I could be wrong, of course, since I don't know much at all about Native American artifacts.

    Such a gorgeous day on the water! So relaxing to watch, too. I wonder if that canoe-looking rock was some kind of Native American metate? I’m just a newbie to that stuff, but if there was evidence that the dugout part was worked rather than natural, it’s a possibility.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought of something like that, but the inside and sides were both much rougher than the outside. ipIf it had been used for grinding, I would expect the inside to be smoother or at least show some wear marks.

    Rob, you’re messing with my mind ! It’s only Monday. I’ll have to say that is one of the cheesiest videos you have ever put out ! It looks like you guys had a really good time. The sink holes are crazy. I don’t think I’d like to be out on the water when one of those things decided to develop. I’d probably be like being flushed down a giant toilet.
    Thanks for cleaning up the environment as you go. The beaches that I’m able to get to are pretty well clean but I always pick up the trash when I’m out metal detecting.

    Are petoskey stones and pudding stones only on the shores of Michigan? Can I find them on the North Shore of Lake Superior?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The source of the puddingstones is at the eastern end of Lake Superior, so that's about the only place on the north shore of the lake that you'd find them. I don't think there are any Petoskeys in Lake Superior. They're found south of a line from about Rogers City (on Lake Huron) to Harbor Springs (on Lake Michigan. That's just an approximation, but there is a northern limit.

    Did u keep the carved out boat looking rock? Possible indian artifact ..

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not keep it and I don't think it's an artifact. I stood there on the beach looking at it for a long time trying to decide if it might be an artifact. The inside was much rougher than the outside, which leads me to believe it was broken. If it had been used for grinding something on the inside, I'd expect it to be worn smoother. I could be wrong, but that was my thinking.

    • @MichiganRocks

    Wow what beautiful scenery! I love it! My husband and I would love to take a trip up there to do some Rockhounding . Do you have any places you would suggest we go?? We are coming from Arizona and have never been there and my main reason to go is to rockhound . Would appreciate any info :)

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  ปีที่แล้ว

      The place in this video is way above average for Lake Huron, probably because it's so hard to get to. You couldn't really go here from a public access point without a kayak.
      I'd suggest you head to the U.P. and hunt rocks in Lake Superior. You won't find the same rocks that I found in this video, but there are lots of great rocks there. I just got back from a four day camping trip there just to hunt rocks.
      I'd consider going to the Keweenaw Peninsula. There are some good beaches for hunting rocks, but there is also a lot of mining culture from back when that was the biggest copper producing spot in the world. The scenery is beautiful. There are rugged rocky shorelines, great views from places like Brockway Mountain Drive, mine tailings piles like Cliff Mine where you can look for small pieces of copper or chisel chips where old time miners chiseled the copper by hand. There's a great shop called The Jam Pot where Byzantine Catholic monks make and sell jams and bakery items that are amazing. Copper Harbor is an awesome little town at the tip of the peninsula. There's a mineral museum in Houghton that is amazing. My son in law, who is a geologist has been there and to the Smithsonian and said that the museum in Houghton has a better mineral collection. McClain State Park and the Mouth of the Gratiot River are two of my favorite beaches to hunt in that area.
      The other spot I like is the eastern U.P. from Grand Marais, Michigan to Whitefish Point. This area is much more remote, but not as beautiful. There are a lot of jack pine forests and plenty of beaches. The roads are almost all dirt and can be pretty rough. This is the area I just got back from. I like the rock hunting better here and I do love the area even though it's not as pretty as the Keweenaw Peninsula. I just love how remote it is. I didn't have cell phone reception for almost the entire time I was there.

    Looks like an awesome area to explore. Do you know where the closest public access would be, to launch from?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I launched from my friend's house, but there's a nature preserve right next door. To get here, drive past the LaFarge Cement plant (Ford Avenue/Misery Bay Road) about four miles to North Point Road. North Point Road is the first road to the left, do not confuse it with North Point Shores, which is a private road to the right. After turning on to North Point Road, you'll pass a few houses on your right. Just past the last house, look for a gate on your right. Park on the side of the road and walk in. It's about a quarter mile walk (rough guess) to where the trail comes to the water. I have a set of wheels for my kayak and I have dragged it down this road to access the bay. Otherwise, you'd have to kayak a very long ways to get here. I can't think of any other access.
