    I had one of them more than 50 years, ago. They were my first steps in electronics, now I'm a retired E.E. , and still have memories of this kit, and some left components

    I was given one of these in1967.
    It was the catyalyist that propelled me to a stellar career in the sciences, Defence, quantum physics and Aerospace.

    I got this kit when I was 10 years old and it was the best toy I ever had. This kit was the reason I later on became an electronic engineer and worked as that until I was retired. Today I'm 70 but I still remember when I was making things of this Philips kit.

    Another very happy customer of this kit- spurred my lifelong interest - and career (I ended up teaching it at university) - in electronics. Now I am just starting out again with the current equivalent (Raspberry Pi) and learning together with my grandsons....

      Likewise..went onto spend 40 years teaching electronics at university. Currently enjoying making Android apps using the free MIT AppInventor.

    I was told all the radio's from the PHILIPS EE series where exellent radio's in performance. Great to see 1 of the first series work!

      Yes they were. I also have an EE1003 kit with the EE1005 add-on kit. With these you can make superhet radios - which were even better performance.

    I had this kit as a young boy in the 60s. I still have fond memories of it. It is without question the best "toy" I ever received! I loved it. The electronic organ was pretty cool but my favourite use involved connecting it with another kid across the street who also had the kit. We had wires dangling over the road from our bedroom windows and set up an intercom that was open both ways at the same time so that we could speak to each other and listen without any switching. Those were the days!

    I think Philips got the recipe just right with these kits, being not too simple, not too complex with clear instructions and nice packaging. Well done Philips.

      @jimsmith4999  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. And the circuits all worked too! I progressed on to the ee1003 kit with the superhet add on kit. - now that was complex! I'm certain that it was due to the knowledge learnt from building and understanding those kits that I got my first job when I left school as a repair engineer for a large Radio/TV manufacturer.

    Surprised you have this down as a 1968 kit...had same in '65...followed by add-on kit A20, again prior to '68.
    Great to see this....you've made an Old Man ....very happy!!! :)

      Thanks, glad you liked it! The year was queried in an earlier comment, they apparently stopped production of the EE8 kit in 1966. I'll amend the text! I borrowed my friend's kit in 1968, and that Christmas, my parents gave me a EE1003 kit. Much better! As well as an EE8, I also have an EE1003 and the add on EE1004 & EE1005.

    Brings back wonderful memories. I had one of those kits as a kid and went on to teach electronics at university for almost 40 years. Amazing how a childhood Christmas present can set a course for life. Thank you for posting this video.

    Was reminiscing about this kit recently and realized what a major influence it had on my life. The excellent book clearly explained the basic principles of electronics and radio and eventually led to a career in the electronics industry. My fascination with radio listening and life long study of music also started here. As someone else commented probably the best "toy" I ever had.

    This has brought tears to my eyes, fond memories of a Christmas 50-odd years ago. I was ecstatic when I opened the first kit, and was in disbelief when I opened another present to find it was the add-on with the loudspeaker etc. That radio in the video, with the add-on amp and speaker, was my bedroom radio for many years. I would love to get my hands on these kits again! Many thanks for posting this!

      Nice to hear that there are others that have similar memories to me! I remember sneaking my assembled radio under the bed covers and listening to Luxembourg or the pirate stations.....

    This brings back memories for sure. I had the compact EE1050 and I remember being a bit disappointed at the time that my kit didn't have the parts to build a radio, I don't think I built any of the circuits more than once. The EE1050 was able to be extended by the addition of the 1051 and 1052 and with the latter came the ferrite rod antenna, loudspeaker etc but I just had the base kit.
    Eventually of course most of the parts got permanently soldered into other circuits and that was the end of my EE1050, but they were a great idea and it is great to be able to see one in action again.
    Thank you for posting !!

      I had the EE8 as a Christmas present, but became frustrated that I never had the components necessary for loudspeaker operation, which required an extra transistor stage. I eventually soldered my components together on a paxoline board using the circuit in this video, having become obsessed with radio, and everything else eventually ended up lost. I later regretted that because I realised I could have used it for experimentation.

    My sinceer thanks Jim for sharing this EE8 vid. Like a previous comment It was my favourite toy of all time. You reminded me of many hours of fun, and a few frustration hours when I reversed the poles on the 4 wire transistor.

    Absolutely brilliant. I had one too 1965 I think. Mother was a Jehovah's Witness and this was one of very few presents I ever got. I started in the TV trade in 1970 at the age of 15 and still like tinkering about. Thanks for sharing this great memory.

    Yep, i had an EE8 kit in the mid 60's and it gave me a lot of enjoyment. I remember being envious of another lad in my street coz he had the EE20 kit. Even though i don't have the box and board nowadays, i do still have many of the original components.

    I had the posh version in the Plastic cabinet. Hours of fun, with a simple modification and an outside aerial on a few turns of wire around the ferrite rod, got me the Trawler band, shared with the Amateurs, which led to my Radio Amateur's Exam. Now I talk to the world.

      Hi, my kit is boxed away at the moment, however this website www.qsl.net/pa2ohh/oldproj.htm shows the 3 transistor radio circuit, which is the same as the one in my video except it has an additional transistor to power a loudspeaker. It is the layout and schematics marked C3 near the top of the page.

    What? No trawler band?
    I'm surprised the AF116 still worked, considering I heard that a flaw was discovered with that type of transistor which caused a corrosion of the internals and a short-circuit to the casing.

    • @jimsmith4999
      @jimsmith4999  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The instruction manual does include the procedure to wind a coil of hookup wire around the ferrite rod, which retuned the receiver for trawler band. I did try this when I had first had the kit, but it didn't pick much up! However by experimenting with the number of turns on the coil, I did receive other interesting short wave stations such as amateur ham stations and the 'number stations'. As regards the transistors, I still have about 5 original 'new stock' AF116s from my radio repair days (1980's). They are very tarnished, but they still all work!

    • @CrankCase08
      @CrankCase08 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was the reason I mentioned the trawler band, albeit in jest. I remember following the instructions for the trawler band coil too, but like you, I didn't pick up much either. I wonder if the ham stations you received were on 'Top Band', which was at 160 metres.

    • @jimsmith4999
      @jimsmith4999  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suspect those ham stations were on top band - but they would have been narrow band a.m. rather than SSB which I believe is the norm now - maybe I'll get that EE8 out again!
