I think it's ok, these kinds of mate are a super cultural hobby, people normally don't get it. The same thing occurs with coffee (less cultural). Deeper you go to people's hobbies, the more niche they become.
I think this is better than the coffee nerds since it 's not about thousands in equipment but about technique. Personally I don't make mate like this but with a tea filter and a small amount of leaves. I'm pretty far away from South America so I'm probably good.

That’s also traditionally if it’s going to be shared between people the way he’s preparing it….. they also have/make much much smaller Gourds. Where you are supposed to prepare the tea like this. Some brands are really strong like espresso and aren’t really meant to be shared in large groups plus the smaller gourds don’t hold much water. Where as the larger ones like he has are good for sharing with people and making maté traditionally like this

This is Uruguayan approved, word by word. Only one minor detail is that you should let your mate “hinchar” or swell for 5 minutes, with warm or cold water even, instead of hot water. This can prevent potentially burning the leaves in the first pour 🙌🏼🤝🏼
Chilean here, here in the south of Chile we drink mate in the first way, it's just the way my mother, grandparents etc made it, and almost all the chilean family's I know, and yes the first sips are bitter, but that is part of enjoying a mate, a lot of people love that bitter flavor. So, in conclusion, just drank mate the way you want, no one is gonna tell you If you are doing it well or bad, for example in Argentina they make terere Wich is a mate but with juice instead of water, yeah it's strange, but they enjoy it so it's good. It’s prepared multiple ways in Argentina. In fact in many homes the first bitter steeps of mate are drank by the head of the home. Kind of “taking one for the team” if you will. It’s also a lot less common for the meticulous prep when you’re working. My family friend has a cattle farm that I’ve worked on during summers, and we would flood the mate every time. At the end of the day though, it’s just good to see the culture shared, and drink your mate however you most enjoy it.
Thing is, you just get used to the strong taste anyways. And in my family, we just take sips until you finish the cup and pass it along. Kind of like a strong tea
I remember in art class my teacher (amazing man!!) shared his Yerba with the ones who were curious about it. I miss Mr Fitz, he truly sparked interest and cultivated a curiosity in his students that would lead a generation. Which is why I, a small town Ontarian drinks Yerba Mate. Ok i've seen lots of people "triggered" by this video so let me explain a couple of points: - Hes not being a snob, Mate is really this different depending on the brewing method, It can be really bitter or practically flavorless depending on how much "polvo" or dust makes contact with the water. - Mate is meant to last multiple brewings and be shared with family and friends, it's just a way to socialize, kinda like breaking bread? - Yes you can drink a single serving, yerba mate also comes in a teabag presentation incase you dont wanna share or you just want a single brew.

That's (nearly) a perfectly done URUGUAYAN mate. The only way to make it better would be 1) before pouring the hot water, use warm water to avoid burning the yerba, 2) get a pumpkin-made mate instead of a metal or porcelain one, it'll save the flavor and add a bit of wooden taste

Brazilian here, you can drink your mate whichever way you wish, but the technique used really saves a lot of the leaves for longer consume. It’s fun to see other people drinking mate, knowing that South American culture spreads throughout the world!

I've been drinking mate for about 10 years and I think the taste is not the main part of this drink. It is more about the refreshing effect and the whole process of making the drink, sipping it and just having it by your side while you go about your day. As a gaucho (people from a region of Brazil that has mate in a daily basis) I can say it is in fact pretty important to us, especially the elders. You cam drink mate in pretty much every ocasion and it is really a normal thing to see when people are chilling in their yards. And of course it is sacred to us and if you do it slightly different than the traditional the elder to drink will always criticize you 😂 (sorry 4 bad english tho)

is like sour warm water, it taste better than it sounds and has variations, if you want a more flavor-full one try making it with fresh juice of any kind, this one is called "terere", and if you like the original but is to sour, but some sugar (this last one is a bit controversial, is like the mint with chocolate chips equivalent of mate, you usually hate or love it)

I used to gently simmer brick weed in whole milk and dozen or so minutes then mixing it with coffee and a metric funk ton of sugar. It tasted about like a trailer park goblins foot but it sure worked to keep me fried at work in the mornings.
In Syria we use smaller cups that are a bit bigger than a shot glass, and as we share it and refill it we slowly remove some and add some of the matte to keep it fresh
In Brazil, we make this with cold water, and we enjoy the bitterness until it gets to the 4th or 5th refill, where there will be no more bitterness. We call it Terere (te-re-re rolling all the r’s)

My brother I am lebanese and drink matte three times a day One of my grandparents went to Argentina and when he came back he drank matte by flooding it. That’s also traditionally if it’s going to be shared between people the way he’s preparing it….. they also have/make much much smaller Gourds. Where you are supposed to prepare the tea like this. Some brands are really strong like espresso and aren’t really meant to be shared in large groups plus the smaller gourds don’t hold much water. Where as the larger ones like he has are good for sharing with people and making maté traditionally like this

Chilean here, here in the south of Chile we drink mate in the first way, it's just the way my mother, grandparents etc made it, and almost all the chilean family's I know, and yes the first sips are bitter, but that is part of enjoying a mate, a lot of people love that bitter flavor.
So, in conclusion, just drank mate the way you want, no one is gonna tell you If you are doing it well or bad, for example in Argentina they make terere Wich is a mate but with juice instead of water, yeah it's strange, but they enjoy it so it's good.
The same goes with other things, like coffee, tea, etc.

It’s prepared multiple ways in Argentina. In fact in many homes the first bitter steeps of mate are drank by the head of the home. Kind of “taking one for the team” if you will. It’s also a lot less common for the meticulous prep when you’re working. My family friend has a cattle farm that I’ve worked on during summers, and we would flood the mate every time. At the end of the day though, it’s just good to see the culture shared, and drink your mate however you most enjoy it.

I miss Mr Fitz, he truly sparked interest and cultivated a curiosity in his students that would lead a generation. Which is why I, a small town Ontarian drinks Yerba Mate. It’s a beautiful tradition and I’m thankful I got to experience even a little bit of it!

Ok i've seen lots of people "triggered" by this video so let me explain a couple of points:
- Hes not being a snob, Mate is really this different depending on the brewing method, It can be really bitter or practically flavorless depending on how much "polvo" or dust makes contact with the water.
- Mate is meant to last multiple brewings and be shared with family and friends, it's just a way to socialize, kinda like breaking bread?
- Yes you can drink a single serving, yerba mate also comes in a teabag presentation incase you dont wanna share or you just want a single brew.

Brazilian here, you can drink your mate whichever way you wish, but the technique used really saves a lot of the leaves for longer consume. It’s fun to see other people drinking mate, knowing that South American culture spreads throughout the world!

I've been drinking mate for about 10 years and I think the taste is not the main part of this drink. It is more about the refreshing effect and the whole process of making the drink, sipping it and just having it by your side while you go about your day.

As a gaucho (people from a region of Brazil that has mate in a daily basis) I can say it is in fact pretty important to us, especially the elders. You cam drink mate in pretty much every ocasion and it is really a normal thing to see when people are chilling in their yards. is like sour warm water, it taste better than it sounds and has variations, if you want a more flavor-full one try making it with fresh juice of any kind, this one is called "terere", and if you like the original but is to sour, but some sugar (this last one is a bit controversial, is like the mint with chocolate chips equivalent of mate, you usually hate or love it)

I am lebanese and drink matte three times a day
One of my grandparents went to Argentina and when he came back he drank matte by flooding it.
If you shake your leaves,the taste will not be bitter as much.If you can't handle the original taste just say it.
Btw if you flood it it can last about 20 reffils before you simply change the yerba.

I was going to make that exact point. In Argentina, this way of serving is just a fashion trend. The way he called "soup" is most traditional, and the people who make it in the way shown here is what we call "fantasma" (phantom or ghost, wich in this context means "pretentious douche").
It is supposed to be pretentious, it's the attitude of a free man.
I wouldnt look at it that way. Theres no correct way to do everything, but theres usually a best way. Its probably like ripping open a couple bags of tea and dumping them into hot water.

Mate entusiasts are arguably weirder than coffee enthusiasts because coffee drinkers aim to get the best extraction and mate drinkers aim to tell everyonr that they're drinking it the wrong way.
The fact that you dont see them docent mean they arent common, you are just looking in the wrong place to find them.
Also, they aim to make the best or more traditional mate specifically to shear it with people no to tell "everyonr" that they are drinking the wrong way, we usually teach people who arent from those places how to do it instead of mocking, we only make fun of people who are born in places that drink mate as tradition

Mate has a "right way" to prepare only in the sense that drinking it too hot ruind your taste and can cause fucking throat cancer. Other "wrong" ways are just, like, more prone to clogging

Brazilian from the south of Brazil here, you drink however you want and it's best for you, there are people who don't have the money to spend so much on mate so they use more water than mate
Yerba mate has a lot of cultural weight. I remember one of my mom's friends, from Argentina, arriving at my grandpa's funeral with mate. It was very soothing and nice, having a moment to share mate in the middle of that.
What he got wrong at least for southern Brazil is people usually dont take it while doing any activity at all, its for when you're with your family literally doing nothing like waiting for the Sunday cookout to be ready

Finally, an explanation for the unholy amount of leaves used!! This makes sense and I'm sure it is a more nuanced drink this way than the bitter concoction you get when you just dump hot water over the whole thing.
