Kate Bush is an unsettling crush isn't she lol...It's a 'do I'...'Dont I?' thing...she is like some intangible, distant, sensual, earthy but awe inspiring fascination... I always thought Neenah Cherry had a similar feel to her...weirdly.

Whenever I hear this song, I think of my son who died at age 27. I know this song isn’t about this, but the lines “if I only could make a deal with God and get him to swap our places, be running up that road, be running up that hill, with no problems” speak to me profoundly.

    Kate shared the songs meaning👇
“I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman, can’t understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other’s roles, if we could actually be in each other’s place for a while, I think we’d both be very surprised! And I think it would be led to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either … you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, ‘Well, no, why not a deal with God!’ You know, because in a way it’s so much more powerful, the whole idea of asking God to make a deal with you."

@@Astro-Markus I am not saying all feminists. I am saying hardcore feminists who go overboard and actually want special treatment as oppose to equal treatment. I use New Wave because of the time frame she worked. That British Post Punk Prog sound, i.e. New Wave. Peter Gabriel is most definitely Prog, but his early solo albums are standards of New Wave.
Not to get on a complete rant, but I think many music fans don't understand the pedigree of New Wave. Where it came from. Why it evolved. How it grew completely differently in the U.S. and Britain, but from the same basic root.
In the U.S., we hear of CBGBs and New York Dolls and think Punk. Yet from that same scene came Blondie, the pinnacle of New York New Wave, as an example.
Yes, Kate Bush was discovered and recorded from the Prog scene, but she is New Wave. Helped develop British New Wave. Seriously influenced British New Wave.

Yeah, the OA used what's called "contemporary dance" - also sometimes called "interpretive dance" - in the series, and that's the style of dance being performed in this video too. Contemporary dance came out of the mid-20th century, and has had different times since where it became more popular in mainstream culture. It definitely had more visibility in pop culture in the 70s, when Kate started out, but it's appearances in the mainstream dwindled more as the 80s went on. More recently though, it's seen a resurgence, such as what you brought up from the OA. But also you can see it in places like Sia's music videos featuring Maddie Ziegler dancing or stage performances by Halsey.

Treat yourself and listen to the whole album Hounds Of Love front to back. The whole second side is one series of thematically linked material, much like a Pink Floyd album.
She is the total package: she maintains total creative control over her own product, produced and engineered most of it herself, as well as doing the voices and much of the instrumentation. Despite her record company - she was doing what Prince wanted to do when he conducted his campaign of freeing himself from Warner Bros. Incidentally, Prince is on the record saying Kate Bush was not only one of his favorite musicians but one of his favorite human beings on the planet.

The Netflix show you're referencing is The OA, which stands for Original Angel. It sadly only lasted 2 seasons, but I can see what you mean about the similarities between the movements they made in that show when they were traveling to another dimension and Kate's dance moves in this video.
Running Up That Hill was a huge hit for Kate, one of her best known songs, from one of her best known albums, Hounds of Love. If you like this track, you might like the title track from the album which features the same synth sound this track has. Hounds of Love's lyrics are about learning not to be afraid of giving and receiving love, which Kate characterizes as "hounds," chasing her to the point of both fear and exhilaration in the song.
The second half of Hounds of Love is a mini concept album called The Ninth Wave, 7 songs based on the concept of a child who goes skating on a frozen river, breaks through the ice into freezing water, almost drowns and is washed out to sea, awaiting rescue. Themes of death, life, good and evil, being seen and unseen are present in the song cycle. It's one of the most ambitious and amazing things she's ever done. Worth a listen at least once.
Kate didn't record any videos for The Ninth Wave, except for the opening track, And Dream of Sheep, which catches the child in the middle of her saga - washed out to sea, trying to stay awake and afloat, hoping a boat will come by and rescue her before she succumbs to sleep and drowns. True to her commitment to her art, Kate filmed the video in a tank of freezing water, and allowed the film crew to record her singing in the tank. What was produced is a very realistic video of the concept of the song. th-cam.com/video/_256xd9N27o/w-d-xo.html

The themes Kate explores are so courageous. She choreographs, directs and produces her own work, ( I think she collaborated with a choreographer on this one), so because she has total creative control, there is NEVER anything generic or standard about her music, songwriting, videos, or performances. She is unlike anyone else. But there have been MANY women artists from the eighties to the present day that have followed her lead and her influence is now literally everywhere. Bjork, Tori Amos, Sinead O Conner, Sarah McLaughlin, Florence and the Machine, Cocteau Twins, Portishead, and even Madonna picked up on Kate's pioneering strategies to take total control. EMI are actually afraid of her because she has an army of lawyers watching the contractual obligations and stipulations VERY closely. She takes her time and really perfects, shapes and sculpts these masterpiece albums, many years often
Lay between each release. EMI: "Kate, we noticed that have no charting hit singles on either of your last two albums"
    Kate: " I know...I didn't write any"

Kate Bush is privileged to have a direct line into the hearts and minds of her audience. She’s infectious and sublime. Ineffable. She reaches places nobody else can. This song so clearly encapsulates the feeling of love that means you want to merge with the other person so much it hurts. It’s how I feel about my wife. We are made out of clay and we swap it back and forth as we live until we are mixed together. That was the poem I had read by my friend at our wedding. My wife is Chinese and this poem, called Clay, is by Guan Daosheng:
    You and I
    Have so much love,
    That it
    Burns like a fire,
In which we bake a lump of clay
Molded into a figure of you
    And a figure of me.
Then we take both of them,
    And break them into pieces,
And mix the pieces with water,
And mold again a figure of you,
    And a figure of me.
    I am in your clay.
In life we share a single quilt.
In death we will share a single coffin.
This is the feeling the song gives me too.

  • @brianherr2542

This song is about her wanting to swap roles with a man. In her words...“I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman, can’t understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other’s roles, if we could actually be in each other’s place for a while, I think we’d both be very surprised! [Laughs] And I think it would be led to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either … you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, ‘Well, no, why not a deal with God!’ You know, because in a way it’s so much more powerful, the whole idea of asking God to make a deal with you.”

I just recently heard this version of this song. I heard someone taking about how this song was their jam as a kid and searched it out. I was suprised to recognize it bc I had Placebo’s cover in my Spotify playlist already. I like this song a lot but I have to admit I kind of like the covers more bc they sound less 80’s, but I can appreciate the original. Kate Bush seems amazing. I def should check out more of her music.

Man...the Placebo version is fantastic. It was the reason I went back and started re-listening to (and appreciating) Kate Bush.

@@LouSpowells I know I love it. I wish Jamal would check out a friend in need. That song, it was the coolest sht in the world when I was a kid. I saw the video and like a lot of young girls I was at the age when androgynous boys pushed all my romantic buttons. Him with his black nail polish and angsty persona and the clever lyrics that were so subtly naughty...I was done for. So that song has a special spot in my heart bc it hit me at just the right age to make a huge impression. But I also want to explore Kate Bush. I recently started listening to patti smith and I can’t be I’ve I never knew about her. She’s so cool.
