    I joined the Navy in 2001 as an undesignated Seaman. I went through bootcamp, ATD school, and then got orders to a carrier. When I got there I was assigned to Deck Department where it was assumed that I would strike BM. Any talk of doing otherwise was first brushed aside, and then actively discouraged. Any effort to do any OJT with any other rate was met with open hostility and you were made to do said OJT "on your own time" only to find your "working hours" with deck department extended long into the night where it had suddenly and mysteriously become vitally important that you paint out a space right away....only there was no paint so you had to sit holding a wire brush in one hand while wishing you could just go to sleep. Often times your chain would actively work against your efforts in many other ways as well. One of the guys I knew about sat down to take what he thought was an advancement exam for another rate only to pull back the first page and find the BM exam staring back at him. Meanwhile those that chose to strike BM became members of the in crowd. There were no late nights with a wire brush for them. After four years of that, I ran away as fast as I was able. I'm not sorry that I joined the Navy. It was an excellent springboard for what I would do later in life, but my time in was filled with some of the most deceitful people that I have ever met.

    I went into the Navy with my rate already picked Engineman. I scored number 5 in my A School and got orders to Surface Operations in Navsta Roosey Roads. And as an EN on Boats. I did Marlin Spike Seamanship right along side the BMs. At least I got some TAD time with the Seabees while I was there.

    My Navy career spanned three decades. As a seaman back in the 80’s (graduated YN “A” school) I was highly motivated and wanted the ESWS designation, it took me almost a year. Back then you had to get. OJT to learn your rate onboard ship which was night to day compared to A School, I was then sent off to Mess Crank, then Fire Watch Duty (shipyards), then off to learn your watch station duties, Damage Control duties after all that you then started working on advanced Firefighting PQS, then the ESWS PQS and that was at least another 4 to six months of learning (most all conducted in the evenings after work and or your evening duty). Has all this changed in the last 10 years as there was no ESWS program onboard ship. On my first sea duty tour only 4 of the ships company qualified and were designated as ESWS and am proud to say I was one of those 4 (frocked YN3).
    Nice to hear other people’s stories. ⚓️

      So you were start from snpact?

    • @OneTalaw
      @OneTalaw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      刘家程. No, I enlisted with a guaranteed “A” school, but the school only teaches the fundamentals, you then go to the ship’s office, ideally for six months (the idea was to help cement what A school started) before being sent off to mess crank for 90 days. Follow mess cranking, you could get sent off to engineering (learn basic damage control) or deck (learn basic fundamentals of seamanship). Then it’s back to the ships’s office to continue your OJT and study to try and make rate otherwise there is the potential to be sent back to mess crank for another 90 days. Fun times (not), does motivate to try and qualify for all your watch stations, DC responsibilities and advance in your rate. Following all that I qualified for all the advanced firefighting PQS, and for me it only made sense to continue my PQS in ESWS and qualify and be designated as ESWS, of course no E3 and below wears ESWS until you make E4, hence I was a frocked YN3 at the time. Lots of work in just a couple years.

      nothing nothing that’s true. But you get more money when you are a reservist who gets deployed. You will get paid more than active guys because you will get BAH and what not. Also when you get off active duty and back to the reserves after deployment, the navy buys your leave days and you’ll get an extra few hundred on your paycheck depending on how long you were out
