Kathmandu is a wonderful city with so much history and a number of tasty Nepalese street food ( • Nepali Street Food - D... ) snacks to sample. One of the popular snacks is known as chatamari (also known as chataamari). It's basically a cross between a crepe or pancake and a pizza, I prefer to compare it to the latter as it has so many different toppings.
The base of chatamari चतांमरि is created from a batter made from rice flour. The vendor first poured the batter onto a hot skillet and then flattened it out with the bottom of the scooper. She then immediate tossed on a mixture of egg beaten up with minced buffalo and a variety of spices. After spreading it all out evenly on top of the base, she then plopped another egg right into the middle of the Nepalese street food pizza. A few slivers of tomato and some cilantro and salt were then added to the top. The chatamari was then covered with a clay top and cooked for a few moments before being ready.
Once my piping hot pancake was fully cooked, the friendly vendor took it off the griddle, sliced it up into smaller bite sizes pieces and then place the entire pizza into a leaf bowl to eat. I was delighted and hungry to sample my first buffalo egg Nepalese pizza!
The Nepalese Chatamari चतांमरि was just about as delicious as you can imagine. The base of the pancake was soft and pillowy and the toppings were spicy and flavorful. Buffalo is a very common meat to eat in Nepal, and it's very fragrant with a stronger or more gamey flavor than beef.
Chatamari is originally a Newari food ( • Nepali Newari Food - E... , traditionally served in the Kathmandu valley area during feasts and gatherings. Nowadays the Nepalese pancake is served all over the streets of Kathmandu. It makes a great protein filled snack if you're looking for something salty when walking around!

Mark Wiens Chatamari is a Newari Food of Nepal.
Newari culture and its food itself is older than most of the countries in the world.
And some Indians come around saying its indian food (LOL)
What??? What am i listening?
Don't some people feel ashamed to claim things which isn't theirs.
Sometimes barking Buddha is indian actually "Buddha was born in Nepal".
And everyone knows that.
Well that's just ignorant, get the Geography right.
All these cultures make Nepal unique and powerful.
just learn geography
and do you know buddha full name you will come to know who is he
yes it might be nepali food i respect it
Hey, awesome thanks for sharing! Yes it definitely makes a good snack. For this particular time I wasn't served the soup... but at other restaurants for sure!
Mark Wiens yes it would be great if you got the soup too
Thanks for visiting Nepal Mark you are a legend trying to promote our food and country. Seriously our country is so underrated and no one actually promotes our food. We needed a person like you. Thanks a lot. Please visit Nepal soon❤️❤️
Hey, thank you for watching my videos. No, not everything I eat is a 10/10, but most things I have eaten on camera, I do like and enjoy, but there are varying levels of the delicious face - some are more delicious than others. No faking, just enjoying. Thanks for watching!
You look like Loki.
Lol I see it!
MP Siangsanoh omg i know this is wayy long time ago but yesss he does
I agree on that one 😊
He lowkey looks like Loki
Yes, that's indeed very common, something we just sort of have to accept. The good thing is that the food is cooked hot!
You are awesome
i like your face expression when u eat ,god bless u bro
Thank you so much for your support!
Hey, you're very right, and I agree. It's part of the amazing food experience to be able to see the preparation and the ingredients that are going into the food you're about to eat - rather than just a cooked plate of food appearing in front of you - that's one of the reasons I love traveling and eating so much! Thank you for all your support and I hope you can travel more in the future!
somebody take this guy to eat dhido and atyoo!!
Hey Jerry, good question. Right now I'm actually in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. I'm often in places where the internet connection is not good enough to upload videos, so yes I pre-record and then schedule to publish on weds and sun. I was in India and Nepal about 5 months ago, and while I was there I was recording every day, sometimes 2-3 vids a day, so then just slowly releasing them.
you always pretend that it is tasty you mark
Watching your video always make me very hungry mark...haha!
is it just me or this guy looks like john mayer??no homo tho
Yess it's only you
Thank you so much, I appreciate it!
I feel bad for people in Nepal. If they charge so minimal, they get paid so minimal. I would leave each street vendor $20-$100 tip.
Thank you Mark for bringing recognition to all vendors, restaurants, airlines, hotels, etc. Yes we could always check internet before travel- but you bring it to life. First hand we can say, I'm flying Muhan Airline when I go to Iran- Mark traveled this airline & they had great service & food. I'm going to get this food plate at this location where Mark ate, or I'm going to stay at this hotel where Mark and his family stayed, etc,.
•••Can you show us where we might get great souvenirs on your next travels- maybe even showing some souvenirs, providing name, website and phone number of business- for some who cant travel but order to give out as gifts•••. The business could $ for the advertisement as you have a huge following.
Keep up the great job!!!
Still waiting on tshirt or hoodie with " Oh Wooww", & your pick ( cartoon style) - dont forget chili 🌶 and 👍.

Nepal beautiful country.
I'm Indian always wanted to visit Nepal !!!
Well come to nepal🇳🇵🇳🇵
I am nepali
Hey Kawaii, yes I've been thinking about it, possibly in the future!
Well, It is called CHATAMARI. It is a mix dish. U can call it Pizza or Pan cake. If you make is plaine without adding anything. It is a kind of Rice Pan Cake. Because it is maked of Rice flour. If you add some thing in it, it becomes a kind of Pizza. If you put an egg in it, It becomes an omlett pizza. Ha ha. Enjoy Newar Cuisine ( One of Nepalese Cuisines). There is a lot to be discovered.
Yes you're right, there are pancake type of things all over the world. Thank you very much for watching!
Hey Preethy, I really want her too as well... but she's not so sure about it yet. I'm working on her!
You have really exposed me to so much culture and food that I have never would have. Now I need to find a way to try and visit some of them.
I like how each region has their own variation of what we call "pancake", using their local ingredients. This one looks kinda like dosa but with meat topping. I'm learning a lot about world cuisine through your channel :)
Yup, especially in Nepal and India, meals and snacks are so cheap
can someone link me to the video at the end. i really need to see it
Rs 50........
I remember i paid 20 wen i was in town back in 008...
one thing is you need to finish drinks in single shot
Hey Kaleena, not everything, but I know it was egg mixed with buffalo and onions and some spices, but not sure what else, but it sure was good!
well being in nepal and never tried chatamari....
Prakash Aryal same

Hey, I had some fried potatoes, aloo fry, and potato cutlets, but I don't think I ever had any potato skewers, sounds good!
Hey Antonio, no I'm not in Nepal anymore. We were there in March, and it was a good month, not too busy and still cool but not overly cold. Hope you can go!

Hey, yes I'm based in Thailand, but only there about 50% of the time and traveling about 50% of the time. Where do you live?
She normally eats after we film... but sometimes if she's too hungry, I'll let her eat before we film. I'm glad she's patient with me!
Well, I first try to eliminate trying something I wouldn't like, but if I do make a video about something I don't like, I'll definitely upload it!

Hey Mark! I really enjoy watching your videos! However, one thing I'm really confused about. Every week you post videos regarding places from Nepal/Thailand/India. So did you already record these videos before hand and you're just waiting to upload them on Wednesdays and Sundays? Like where are you exactly? Thanks!!
yeah actually i was lucky, when i walk around thamel i get lost between small alley and end up in a local restaurant, with no english menu i'm not sure if i'm still in thamel or not
anyway if you're planning to go to jakarta gimme a holler, I can ask my friend to take you around town or if i'm in the country i can take you round myself :)
keep the good job man!
