Living in the Gdansk area with family now. Finally decided to make the move from the US. It was a bit easier for me as my mother, grandparents, great grandparents etc etc are from Poland and my entire family lives here from Lublin to Gdansk etc. I was the first one born stateside and my brother everyone else here etc etc but now I am currently waiting for my Permanent Resident card, renewing my mother's Polish passport then applying for mine etc etc etc etc. I don't plan on ever returning to the US only to take care of a few more details once I have all my docs etc in place . I enjoy the winters the summers and being around the culture I grew up with etc. cheers i na zdrowie!!

Not going to justify the latter part.
The former is really about how US is setup, it really heavily reduces your options to just not own the car in the US.
Like yes it does reduce the places you could live in Poland(without relying on other people moving you around) or visit to not own a car.
But you can get by a lot just by picking a place with a decent access to bus/train infrastructure + public transport.

I came to USA from Poland at the age of 20 after completing 2 university years in July 1981 when Poland hit the rock bottom…it was a literally political and economical disaster…..we had stamps allowing us to buy meat and shoes , there was nothing on the shelves, stores were empty , no prospect of getting a job or an affordable place to live after graduation, so I had nothing to loose .

Polish language can be learned! I am a polish language teacher as a second language, and I have been working with people with different cultures' backgrounds. People still living in US, not having a daily contract with Polish can learn it too. I had students from US, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, UK, Mexico, Ukraine, and Belarus. Of course, the language is difficult and very different for students not speaking Slavic languages, but they are able to learn it for basic communications purposes..like A2 level without very big problems. Being perfect in grammar and spelling is a different thing, but even Poles are having problems with it sometimes. Do not demonize Polish! You do not need to be perfect to understand basics and to be able to communicate! 😊

funny because many polish people go to the US to treat their aggressive cancer that polish doctors don't have resources to treat or its too risky/too costly compared to the expected results, of course many of these cases end up not really well, because they give you a 5% chance of getting better at the beginning and people go for it only because they are so desperate, especially the parents with SMA treatments or difficult heart surgeries for kids, i have seen multiple charities where people got the money but the kid died during or post-op or people giving their 4-yo children SMA medication that didn't really do much because it is meant for infants and gives the best results for them, but the company still sells it for older kids

You are wrong that Poland was recently westernized. Poland was created in X th centrury as a part of Western European Catholic culture and always strive to remain one. It was conquered by Russia in XVIII th century and recently, after II World War become Stalin's war trophy, part of so called Eastern Block. But Poles never ceased to keep their Western European culture. Believe me, Poland is no more Western in heart than it was in 70ties when I was growing up. Of course, setting asside huge differences because of Soviet control of Poland. I mean, in minds and hearts.
So saying that Poland westernized recently is a bit offensive, somewhat like saying that Poland is in Eastern Europe or similar to Russia.

The identity of a nation depends on a shared set of norms and customs/traditions. If less and less of the new arrivals assimilate to adopt the norms and traditions of a country, then the country becomes more of a land area and less of a country. Once the social glue dissolves, all forms of social malaise like crime increases. Perhaps that is how the leaders of the world want us to be, in a John Lennon's "Imagine" song idealistic style. You need to know something about living in Poland without the ability to speak Polish. It's not just about having trouble with communication. If you really want to stay in Poland for good, you must learn to speak the local language at least on the basic level - to be able to get in touch with the people all around you. Otherwise Polish people won't treat you with the same respect as they treat English speaking tourists. That's because living in a country without being able to speak its language is widely considered as a lack of respect for the people living there and for their culture.

I would say this is especially important for people who want to marry a Pole. Your girlfriend/boyfriend may speak English, but very likely their parents/grantparents/uncles etc. don't, and if someone thinks that's not a problem because:
      a) their girlfriend/boyfriend will translate for them
      b) they don't care about extended family
That will not be taken nicely here.

When you're taking about prices in Poland being lower, do you also consider the purchasing power of salaries in each of these countries respectively? Most of the Poles would disagree with you on that front, because they earn in PLN and not in USD.
Wrócimy do lat 90tych. Do lepszego miejsca. :)

Overall, I agree with your findings - these may indeed be important factors that make Poland attractive to Americans. However, maybe 2 comments - Poland is relatively cheap, but if you earn money in a strong foreign currency - for many Poles earning an average local salary - it is not so good. Secondly - what you consider to be an advantage of social life in Poland, i.e. a certain type of moral or social conservatism, may be considered by many, especially younger Poles, to be a severe burden - but foreigners generally either encounter it superficially or not at all. A small example - if you were in a same-sex relationship with your partner, under the applicable law you have almost no rights as a couple. It is not possible to legalize your relationship as a partnership, let alone enter into a marriage, therefore you have no joint tax or inheritance rights - you will not even be able to find out about your partner's health if he/she were suddenly hospitalized, because you are officially to him/her a stranger. And issues such as your adoption of children are completely unimaginable for the vast majority of society.
I would like to point out that I have been married to the same woman for over 30 years, we have two daughters of our own and one adopted, so I am not dealing with any of my private matters with this comment. I just want my society to be even more open, which also means that I am definitely not a conservative :)

In other city, far from big one like Poznań, there was no public transport at all - it was either a car or bicycle, but try to drive 5km on bicycle in a storm. 100% 18 years old had drive license because it was mandatory, while in cities like Kraków or Warsaw you often hear that somebody do not even want to make drive license.

Dziwne.

Mostly complaining about the government (where elections are seen as choosing the lesser evil), the healthcare system (it's ok, but far from perfect), or all sorts of personal problems one is facing. And of course complaining about your job, bosses, co-workers and such. Oh and finances. You can always complain about stuff you can't afford, and prices going up.
Some say it's a bonding thing - you complain to someone about bad things happening to you, they complain about theirs, and it makes you feel you're in the same boat, so to speak. Also, if someone appears to be a good listener, and will take the time to listen to your complaints, it shows they're a good friend and care about you.

Tbf complaining is a polish thing, but i think complaining is the perfect way to strive for improvement. If we didnt complain how could we know if theres a system thats not working properly? Its deeply rooted in our blood, having communism for so long and not being able to express our thoughts freely has taught us that we need to raise our voice in things which need improvement, the second thing is Polish people are quite pessimistic compared to the whole world, we call it realism, if we stop complaining we will feel comfortable, and that brings way more problems than being pessimistic and expecting bad. Dont be fooled tho, if anything is generally good we will talk about it with pride.

Maybe I’m mistaken but I think Poland has a more „loose” position on crime than the USA.
There’s been a lot of work done exiting the 90s, but today there’s just not much going on crime-wise. I mean by that that the US police is probably getting a multiple of Polish police’s budget. I assume virtually no guns here do affect how capable the Polish police manages to be, in comparison to the US police, even though they don’t parade around with a military squadron worth of equipment.
USA also has more prisoners per capita.

      1. Determine what you will live on (how you will earn money). If it is remote work, you can do it from any country in the world, including Poland. And you do not have to know another language. If it is not remote work, then ... 2.
      2. Before leaving, learn at least a few dozen words and a dozen or so phrases used most often in Polish (only pronunciation, you do not have to know Polish writing) and industry words related to your job.
      3. After arrival, behave calmly, cultured and with a smile, so no stress, and then every Pole, whether at work or on the street, will help you.
      4. Don't act haughty, arrogant, demanding, loud and don't leave trash because then not only won't anyone help you, but they will decisively and boldly call your attention to your bad behavior.

You are very wrong about perceiving what you call "victim mentality". Polish people tend to have that on a European level. They feel they were betrayed by the west in WW2, they feel they've been victimized by European imperialism of 18th and 19th centuries. Polish nation in general feel it hindered them much being underfoot during communism.
They tend to say it loud during EU parliament disputes, not unlike non-white minorities in the US when they speak out about historical wrongdoings against them. They one thing Poles have that US minorities don't have is their own country, where that are vast majority.
I hate when people talk bullshit like this, but I guess you're not unlike a stereotypical American coming to Europe not understanding the context at all. It is a shame Poland is perceived by the "antiwoke" mob in the US as a backward country, young people especially from big cities are against this kind of mentality.

Well, not necessarily. If so is not very "woke" then can be not welcome to foreigners, especially with different skin. Xenophobia and racism are getting stronger. No victim mentality? Try to talk about repatritions from Germany or about Wołyń XD And patriotizm can be very different bc those many conflicts were between Polish ppl, even elections could be as polarizing as in USA. So I don't think you got a lot things right but it's still intresting to know what foreigners think.

Actually, gun rights in the US are a good thing. Public access to firearms has prevented more crime then it has caused. Not to mention, it's fun as a recreational activity. The anti-gun movement is unfortunately like a lot of others grounded in everything but statistics and patterns. Not to mention, there's a lot you have to go through to own and maintain a license.

USA is only larger by 10% than Europe so comparing crime rates it’s misleading. In the USA you will safe where is low population of black people but nobody gonna say it aloud for obvious reasons. In Poland violent crime happens regularly just media don’t talk about it. And most homicide are based on emotional problems etc. Poland became safer because of mass immigration similar to Venezuela all robbers left Venezuela so became safer 😂

    • @WheresWes
