In Poland you need work to survive. No big money from government. Very small minimum wage. Very small alimony when you get divorce. Most women in Poland can't afford to be single mothers (Which is good because it force women to make better life decisions and search for good, stable partners). If you are alone in Poland - Good luck to survive (Unless you have really good job). That's why we keep close to our families (We help each other). Poland is very good place to life right now because we are middle economy. We don't have poor/rich countries problems. We are to poor for mass illegal immigration and single mothers epidemic but rich enough to enjoy life, have good education/health care etc.

I noticed that the generation of my father (1950-60s) have different standards then today. I was sometimes surprised to see that friends can flirt with themselves quite openly next to a spouse... and nobody even twinks an eye (not sure if I used that expression right, probably mixed something, but I guess you know what I mean). It's just treated as fun, nothing serious, especially that relationships are solid, so people of that age feel secure to allow for more, just for fun, nothing serious. Younger generations won't be as flexible and as secure, and such behavior will be frowned upon.
There are certainly pros of our culture being Westernized, but also cons, but in overall, many things improved, so the net outcome feels positive.

yes, it's true that older generations may be fat in Poland, but this trend is likely to shift with the younger generations. Presently, those aged 30 to 40 are expected to maintain healthier weights as they reach the age of 60, compared to their parents and grandparents.
edit : A brief observation on Polish social structure and social behaviour: it has not been shaped by the Soviet Union or Communism, which lasted only 43 years, about one generation. It is Catholicism and German culture that has had a significant influence on Poland. Additionally, Russian and Ukrainian cultures are more traditionally masculine; unlike in Poland, fathers are not typically expected to be involved in childcare.
Interestingly, traces of the Soviet communist mentality are still evident in the operations of Poczta Polska, marked by disorganization, low productivity, a lack of concern for economic efficiency, subpar customer service, and indolence. Thus, it wasn't the communist/Soviet reality that taught us the value of hard work, but rather the post-Soviet economic shock of the free market and the widespread desire to catch up with the West.

    • @Carrie-so3ro
      @Carrie-so3ro 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

I think the real reason that older Polish people are heavy is because it is harder to exercise as much with age, AND as Polish food is more time consuming to make, it is harder to make the FULL meal so the balance goes off. When the balance goes off & you are not eating the entire variety of foods, you get heavier in weight & also less healthy.
Polish people need to think about this more & take more care of their older parents. Bring them some of the food the parents are not making anymore to round out their meals sometimes & even come over to cook together with the family a number of times a month (with the goal of having some of the foods stored ie. making pickles & beets, pierogi, kapusta, soup to freeze in containers etc.)
This is just something I was thinking about a while ago.

@@Carrie-so3ro Yes, you are right, but it's more than just diet and exercise. The future for Polish middle-aged individuals and seniors will present a different reality. They will be expected to work until the age of 72, as opposed to the 55 years of age that was common for our grandmothers. They will benefit from a more efficient healthcare system, and smoking will be non-existent since cigarettes are to be banned by 2035. Currently, 37% of people over the age of 45 smoke. With the changing climate, reduced sun exposure will likely lead to less skin wrinkling. Additionally, 36% of Poles will not have children and will need to stay fit as they won't have anyone to care for them. The importance of lifelong exercise and maintaining a healthy weight will be widely recognized, and outdated beliefs such as drafts causing illness and the fear of hospitals will disappear.

My one hope is that Poland doesn't FULLY "catch up" with the West in the standard way - which is all about the pursuit of money (at the expense of EVERYTHING else. It is a reason that morals go out the window.)
I HOPE that Poland will KEEP its Catholicism & morals - that DOESN'T see God as $. This understanding that money is HELPFUL, but SHOULD NOT be the END GOAL, leads to a healthier, happy, better quality, balanced life - which includes time with friends, family & just for your self & with honest people that will not hurt you just for their own financial gain.
It is something some Western cultures are trying to not lose entirely even though the "American Dream" & culture of greed is sucking them in - as they view American millionaires/billionaires & their lifestyles & want that money, despite what it will actually do to their life & the lives of SO MANY people they affect.
When you go for this American "ideal", you ALSO end up with EVERY bad & nasty thing about American culture that the rest of the world looks down on.
By sticking to morality & better ideals of this balance (& not greed or gouging of prices/lowering quality etc. to get wealthier, as Poland [unfortunately IS starting to do in some places!]), the country (& the producers) ACTUALLY BECOME wealthier in every way - INCLUDING money.
So many videos talk about the quality to be found in Poland. They mention the lower price in Poland vs. other European countries FOR great value - that it is MAKING Poland a VERY desireable place to visit - & spend tourist dollars BECAUSE of this lower price. Poland WILL LOSE THIS ADVANTAGE - IF it starts to lose morality & gain greed.
My only problem (with Poland's better ways), is that Poland is looking SO desireable WITH this higher quality life at a lower price, that TOO MANY NON-Polish people are wanting to move there! While it is okay to get SOME different immigrants, TOO MANY immigrants esp. who do NOT have a Polish heritage, (or even Polish Americans who have absorbed too many American values), WILL end up changing the VALUES of Poland. In my opinion, NOT a good thing. Poland should be desireable, but immigration therefore needs to be tightened up to KEEP it that way - for ALL Polish - new immigrants & those who have always lived there.
Sorry to be saying so much here, but as a Polish Canadian, (who still grew up with Polish values) & living with America just on our borders, I can see the negative aspects of American culture very clearly. Despite how nice many Americans can be, their culture is so aggressively forceful & pulling others to their ways, that I worry for Poland. I KNOW that the Polish lifestyle IS better & I REALLY hope it will stay that way as it is still the very core of my heart, (despite my true love always for Canada too.)
Take care & have a nice day.

@@ezookami4540 Strong drafts DO cause illness. Have you ever sat with one directly on you? I have felt the effects right away in my lungs, & ended up with breathing difficulties, a cough etc. shortly after - each time - & I wasn't mentally making it happen since I wasn't thinking of the situation I was in until I FELT my lungs. It is certainly not the only cause of illness, but it IS a cause of illness - FOR SURE. It is no myth. I hope you are not believing too much Western/British ideas. They are not truly the most knowledgeable sources (despite their strong ability to appear to know what they are talking about.) Sorry, but true - AND a true talent of confidence, although maybe your source (& the origins of it are from elsewhere.)
As for reduced sun exposure - yes, it can lead to less wrinkled skin, but people DO need sun exposure a certain amount for the BEST absorption of Vitamin D. Popping a pill doesn't equal the quality of the sun's rays within us. We are not that far removed from plants in this way.
The need for childless Poles to stay fit (as nobody will be there to take care of them) will NEED to be emphasized as not everybody looks into the future that way. (There will be some that will also get into serious accidents or get illnesses that will prevent their ability to stay fit - regardless of whether they have children or not.)
(Having) to work until age 72 is terrible! - & SUCH a jump from age 55. People deserve to have some time at the end of their years to enjoy it, without having to go to work until the day they die unless they want to (& working this long will also affect the quality of their lives as bodies DO slow down & start shutting down & yet to be forced to work just as younger, healthier people do will actually lead to a lot of physical & mental stress that will shorten their lives & make them more miserable too.) Raising retirement up until the EARLY 60s can be helpful to society without being too hurtful to seniors. Life should not be ALL about work.

Polish girl here. Your list of characteristics of the Polish culture is strikingly accurate. If Asian culture has the same qualities then yes, they fit really well. It never occurred to me before. One thing I disagree about is the prevalence of cigarettes and alcohol - I don’t believe we abuse them any more than any other European country. If Polish women age differently it must be some other reason. Plus, please keep in mind that people tend to look fresh and young until they turn like 42, then it goes downhill from what i have noticed looking at my friends and myself.

Re: Polish dumplings. I have seen in videos a lot of restaurants (in Poland) NOT serving them the way that I would get them at home from my family, or in Polish restaurants here in Canada. (I guess in Canada they are serving many Polish people who came BEFORE Communism, when all ingredients were fully available), so I am not sure if you have tried them the "proper" way.
The "proper" way is boiled with the fillings that you would be used to (I hope), BUT before being served here in Canada (& especially at home), they are mixed like a salad, with a GENEROUS portion of chopped & fried brown onions (fried until golden on butter or bacon fat) & (a generous portion also of) chopped bacon, WITH the bacon fat from the pan - (fried like a "medium" steak, NOT crisp). They are then served with a PLENTIFUL bowl of sour cream that is often used plentifully on top. The combination of the pierogi & the generous quantity of toppings all taken in on the taste buds at once is comforting heaven. It is very heavy, yes, but when you are dealing with cold days &/or a lot of work/activity being done, they are a wonderful thing.
(While they may be fattening this way, it is not as if they are eaten every night & if you eat a WELL balanced diet AND are ACTIVE, this heavy dish won't matter. [Older Polish people stop being able to make ALL the foods needed for a fully balanced diet as they prepared & ate when younger & THIS is the reason they get heavier. A WELL rounded & balanced Polish diet IS very labour intensive.])
As you are living in Poland now (& Communism is over so you can get all of the proper ingredients in generous quantities again), you should try to prepare pierogi at home the "proper" way (as you can get the pierogi themselves - made WELL, I hope, from stores). Try them this way, especially on a cold winter night in Poland after being active outside & see if I don't have a point.
(I do realise that having an Asian background you are used to lighter foods so if you can't find the beauty in this heavier dish, I understand - AND you may not be able to eat sour cream?)

I spent several of the winter months a couple of years ago visiting relatives in a small town outside of Krakow. It was a very difficult experience because I was living in a Polish speaking household where although the younger generation spoke English, there was very little English conversation in the home. Although I was invited to visit, once I arrived, there was limited interaction. I ate most of my meals alone and spent my days in the bedroom where I slept. I spent a few weekends visiting Germany, Warsaw, and listening to music in Krakow bars, but generally speaking, nobody did any socializing or entertaining except on the rarest occasion such as Christmas Eve. I met some attractive women at bars in Krakow, but I was only there a handful of weekends. The Ukraine War started and shortly thereafter I left because I wasn't getting much out of my time in Poland. In retrospect, I would not visit in the winter and I would spend more time in Warsaw, Gdansk, and Old Town Krakow. Outside of those locations, I found relatively little English and trying to learn Polish in a few months is not practical or useful unless one intends to move to Poland.

My hypothesis is that Polish people age badly because the older generation (people being 50+ now) spent their childhood and part of their youth in the communist times, then the '90 and the beginning of 2000s was difficult time too. First growing up in sort of poverty, bad diet, receiving a lot of bad medication as a child (that today we know to be harmful to children), then high unemployment rate when you are young adult etc. The stress and mediocre lifestyle take their toll. Another thing - eating kind of healthy is rooted in our culture, but e.g. working out or skin care a bit less. The usual leisure for older generations is sitting in front of the TV, no sports + sometimes fatty food + quite often alcohol and cigarettes.
I'm really curious what the aging process will look like in more recent generations, people who do more sports, less addictions, more wealthy and with tools to deal with stress. I can already see a difference.

Polish women would be considered attractive only in comparison to other European nations, which isn’t saying much. Furthermore, the most attractive Polish women are taken by Polish men, not foreigners. This is not the same as what occurs in Latin America.

It was visible in Poland maybe 20-30 years ago just after fall of Socialism. Poland has changed a lot. CORRUPTION INDEX for Poland is 54 like for Italy, Spain is 60, Colombia is 40, Ukraine 36. The higher number = less corruption.
