      The batteries make a difference I’d go with lithium if you can afford it

    Maybe a thick layer of sound deadening material applied to the inside of a sheet metal chain guard. Cheap & easy to try.
    I'd guess chain would allow you to run just a bit looser than a belt saving some friction/wear on the bearings.
    Nice to see someone doing something for themselves. Most don't know which end of the screwdriver to hit with the hammer.

      I switched to the belt and it became a little quieter . i also biult a box around it and that made a big difference. thanks for the ideas ! imay add some foam on the inside of the box in the future

    Nicely done, good job. Many people want to a simple and easy solution to getting out on the water. More and more ponds and lakes are going to "electric" only and you have an inexpensive way to make that happen. Thanks for sharing.     Great video. i restored a 2000 Bayliner capri and now the engine is seized after we ran aground. I would like to be able to convert this 19 boat to electric. Any idea on where to get a set up for a DIY guy. thanks.

      I was set back at the end of last year We had a Gail and her sump clogged the controller and the motor went under before I could pump her out. The way I have to have her tied at the club it was forcing water to pour in with the waves from the wet well. This year i have gotten a new controller with the same but new motor and am making the modifications i mentioned in the first video . i am hoping the new controller will give me more power in reverse . yukangking controller 80 amp is what i got on Aliexpress . in the process of figuring out how to wire it at this point . i will publish an update once i get the motor rocking with the new controller . thanks for asking !!!

    I knew there must be a simple, inexpensive way to get an electric motor for a sailboat! Although I'm sure it took a lot of thought to figure this out. I'm wanting to do the same thing on my Islander 30, but I'll need a bigger motor - maybe at least 5KW. I'm having a hard time finding that. Anyway, thanks for giving me some good ideas & congratulations on your success!

      @@sora9930 so I have another video come out with some research I had done I'm not sure if it's correct but it looks right what I would recommend for your size boat too is to go to Vic prop and you put in your dimensions and it will come up with an equivalent horsepower and equivalent to work typically an electric motors you need to work to talk not horsepower because the engines can be inefficient but you have to have that basic to work so that will give you a good baseline and where you are and then it will also help with the size and diameter and and pitch of a prop what I did was I worked my baseline numbers through and then from that it gave me what horsepower would get me to hell speed and then it also gives the torque at that whole speed when you when you enter that into the program again for that horsepower it will give you the torque that that engine they're thinking is going to produce and then you use that torque to size your motor if you want to do Hull speed. The thing is this whole speed comes at a great cost of power and you're probably only be able to do it for maybe an hour maybe less but you could probably do three knots forever. Just some suggestions my next video is coming out pretty soon with some of that stuff in there and you can always look it over and give me some helpful criticism what you guys what you think

My boat is a 32 trawler with a Ford Lehman giving me some trouble. Time to go...so it has prop and all...Not interested in "racing" so I will be content with 3 knots. Isn't it the real mean of "cruising"? I like your set up better than theirs. Yours is simpler. So thanks again for your videos. Will keep in touch.

    how much watt is your motor ?? like 100 watts or so ?? seems really small on your boat ;) nice project none the less

      Hi Senc, the motor rating is 1800 watts though the controller that comes with it and the advertisement says it's only 32 amps which would be less than 1800. Because I use lead acid batteries which are terribly inefficient I try to keep the three knots which is between 10 and 25 amps depending on the current and the wind on my channel I got a video on the speed and the power if you're interested. I'm about to do one on the lead acid batteries which I can really only afford though the lithium looks so much better and more efficient

    Do you remember what the electrical connections, the white plug connectors are called?
    I need to get the ones tomatch up with what came with the controller but I don't know what they are.

    Thanks for sharing, I have the same motor, right off the bat, seems the drive sprocket is to small, and would be quieter with a larger diameter set up or belt drive
    I have a 18' sailboat I was wanting to add and electric drive to instead of a outboard, this confirms my motor is big enough to do what I was planning.
    I have about 14kwh worth of Nissan leaf batteries that should work just fine with that setup, they just bolt together and configure to any voltage set up you have for your motor....

      This is very cool !!! I thing the larger sprocket would be better. This season , my motor works good. I did switch it over to a belt seems a little bit quieter also built a Box around it just to protect myself from sticking my foot in it. I did change my controller primarily because I really needed to go backwards and the other one was just not cutting it so I got a yu Yang King from AliExpress that had Bluetooth control on it as well . that allows me to adjust and go 100% forward and reverse and it can also give you a lot of other features that I don't use.

      I use a tiny pulley like the e-bikes I got it from electricscooterparts.Com.
      The ratio is 1 to 5 ish . so far the belt and pullys are running good still a bit loud though not as bad as the chain

      I was wondering on the noise issue, have you ran the motor with out a chain or belt to see how much is actually the motor? since everything is tied to a metal plate, it may need rubber or cork dampeners under motor feet to reduce the motor noise/vibration from being transmitted into the metal plate and shaft. Just a thought, my motor is not at all quiet by itself, compared to an a/c induction motor.

I have attached this video which shows some of the considerations I had gone through and also gives the exactly and how you can size the electric motor to your torque requirements on your speed. the thunderstruck motors also has several good links and several good calculators to help you. I hope this helps. when considering this you just want to really look at the batteries for me to let acid we're okay but I made a mistake I thought empowers were the same amp hours rating for all levels of draw but it's not the case with the lead acid batteries you pay a heavy price for taking out a lot of amps and most of them are rated for low amps that's the deep cycle batteries. the fact that I use it just to get in and out of a slip made this mistake forgiving for me but if you're going to need it to go long distances it may be worth the lifting of iron batteries

      Hi Justin , 48 volts , using 4 lead acid deep cycle batteries in series. at three knots the batteries seem to last all day , 5 knots about an hour . currently my multi-meter reports my system to be holding 65 amp hours I am currently trying to nail this down better and will hopefully have more info soon

      There was a little movement back and forth initially . More recently I fixed the motor mount to the floor and have it more locked in to bearing and collars

      in theory yes but with that kind of HP on the drive line i would assume you are going out pretty far . in all honesty i would hate to have that motor as my back up good for close to shore . but if your off shore or in weather i would want a proven system as my back up . you see this is my primary but at anytime i can whip out my seagull gas engine and get back in to shore .

      I got use 4 12 volt 80ah lead acid batteries from batteries and bulbs . I don't mind the weight because i need the ballast . the propeller i dont remember so ill have to look at it for you when i can

    What is the range you are getting and what battery did you add? Also I have a similar size boat a little smaller all steel lifeboat, currently powered by a Montgomery ward 1940;s air cooled 2 HP engine. What is the ratio of sprocket to sprocket, I already have the shaft rigged for belt drive and want to order or turn a pully for the motor but wanted to see what your ratio was from one to the other.

      Currently I have replaced the chain with the belt I have a four to one on there gear reduction It depends on the speed how many miles I'll get max speed up getting right now is probably four and a half knots and that's a great cost and power. My batteries are ever ready deep cycle and they originally rated for 80 amp hours so 48 volt 80 amp hours originally the capacitance of them currently after 2 years is about 65 amp hours. I just recently published a another video that goes into the speed and the torque and the power on my boat to explain what I did in greater detail if you want to check that out but I think that based on three knots I would probably get about 3 hours so I could do probably nine miles. I would question on that though you have great currents or great great wins that are holding you back that might even be less.
      Two nights I would probably get 12 nautical miles with my existing batteries. That's in theory in fact I really only use it to go in and out of the slip and if the wind dies and I want to get back so I've never actually used it for the more than two or three miles

      From my understanding you want to get as large if ratio you can before affecting torque by to big a factor. This will give you the longest batter life because you can run at lower Rpms. I have a small generator which I can Carry with me to increase range but I hope my Prius cell system will give me a good set up in the end.

    how many amps was it drawing - what type of battery sys. did you use? ... i have a 31' Cal with a dead diesel (pulling out now) - def. want to go this route ... but DEF need help getting this accomplished .. i have brand new POOL VAC MOTOR - i think that will work - think :) any ideas would be very helpful ... here in miami

      Lead acid 80 amp hrs im getting about 2 to 3 knots about 30 amps . Lead acid can’t go less than 1/2 rated amp hours or will permanently damage batteries I have another video on the power and speed

      The sharpie was built from plans found in a magazine in 1940 poly sail has the plans for free on there Webb site the designer was a man by the name of Emmett

    Awesome. I'm looking at electric options for my 22 foot trailer sailer. Currently it has a smelly 2 stroke outboard. Can I ask what sort of speed you are getting when under motor and what sort of amp draw? Are you running 12v 24v or 48v? Also interested to know why you didn't go direct inline drive with no chain?

      48 volt system running Hull speed about 4 Knott's coul go up may to 6but I don't because of amp draw I think it was around 8 amps but not sure now if gave was reading accurate when measured

      i am using a zinc anode between the stanchion and prop . for me it works fine . i am not a blue water sailor and the motor is used for getting in and out of the slip or getting home with no wind . its not a bearing and adds to the load but the water lubricates it and it works good

    How much does the boat weight? I have a 6000lbs houseboat and I am looking for a bldc motor power enough to propel it not necessarily at high speed

      So my boat is about 3000 pounds. I would suggest a golden motor or thunderstruck 5000 kW

      @@philcostello6989 The 5kw one looks okay for boats up to 6000lbs but the 10kw is probably better but they are a bit expensive. A twin Vevor 3Kw motors would probably be a alternative. There is also Turnigy Rotomax. I am still researching and learning, I am looking to all possible options, sealed under water engines to prevent any heating issue, even used converted car alternators. Haven’t decided yet if it will onboard or outboard. Thank you for sharing your stories and findings!

    Just an idea. The chain sounds pretty loud. Could just be my speakers. But chain looks much tighter than needs to be. If you loosen to a 3/4 inch slack it might quiet down significantly. Just an idea. Wonderful project. Good job.

      Thanks for the feedback I never would have thought of that that the chain would be too tight but it makes sense I actually changed over last winter to a pulley system there's another video showing that which made it quieter but I wish I knew that before I had changed it maybe it would have made it quieter not enough so I didn't have to make the the change to the pulley

      Just over 5 knots but it would over heat with that motor after a while , it would run for ever at 3 knots

      The conversion is to devide kw by .746 in theory it’s 2.5 . though the gas and electric perform differently depending on tork and thrust at operational speed

    I just commented on your posting and was thinking a bit more about the noise the chain produces.
    What about a spring loaded rubber wheel (like something off a skate board) mounted on the 'slack run' side of the chain.
    'an hour project for a man of your caliber!
    Again a cheap project that might quite things down enough to let you skip spending $$ on belts/pulleys

      No I rely on the washer between the stanchion and the prop . It probably would be a good idea specially with the bigger motors

      so i think the controller is undersized for the motor though it says the motor is rated for the 1800 kw if you do the math its more like 1500 with the controller that comes with it . it did push my boat fine . i purchased a couple of pulleys and a larger controller so this year we will see how much it change . i want it quite.

      @@keithprosser35 Good morning, i have done what you are talking about here ( i used 6 12v trollers on a 22' boat, not a good idea, use 24v, more efficient ), simple re-wiring should do it. You may have hated math class in school, but here is where you are going to need it. Hull speed (hull speed in knots equals 1.34 times the square root of the waterline length in feet (HS = 1.34 x √LWL) is the most efficient way to push the boat, once you try to go faster, the amount of energy you consume increases exponentially, you end up wasting energy, not going much faster. Do the math backwards, what i mean is, figure out what you want to do with the boat first, then fill in the unknown questions, How big a motor, How much batteries, how fast, and how long a trip you want to take. Don't forget a solar panel or two, keep the juice up on battery bank. Look for my upcoming vids on new project.

      sorry I thought i replied to your post . I did GPS the speed which for me was fine a little over 4 knotts . I did not check thee temp but i did have a multimeter on it which was reading 8 amps i am mot sure i believe the amp reading would think it would be more .

    First off knowing Phil for some years I am amazed and glad there was no smoke, Sparks or fire. 😁
    Phil as soon as I heard the chain I thought double belt drive.
    Great concept 👍 have you thought of obtaining a used power chair with shot batteries?
    The motors 2-4 have serious torque. Have programmable speed controllers and you could use one motor for forward and set the other up opposed so that when it in "reverse" it's actually spinning full speed forward.
    Flip the polarity on a motor wears it out faster.
    Speaking of speed a washing machine motor is around 5hp I remember.
    Check out Battle Born batteries, pricey but pack a punch.
    I'm gonna have to call Elon for a Tesla battery and a couple motors.
    I'm thinking "Drag sailboat" 😂
    I once put a Kawasaki 650 engine and jet drive in a 18 foot Jon boat in GA. ⛵🚤

    That is true. I think the ideal would be lithium ion but now you are looking at a battery management system. Or take your chances at fire. I am looking at a middle option between lithium and lead acid which is using recycled Prius power cells wired in a combination of series and parallel for voltage and watt hours the Prius is nickel metal hydried.

      Wow that sounds pretty cool Prius did you get those from a junkyard or is there somebody that's reselling them. I was actually thinking about an e-bike battery pack usually comes with the battery management system since functionally I only really have about 30 amp hours and I've been doing fine with it I might keep that that 30Ah number and for my next battery

      @@philcostello6989 Used to be able to get them free at a junkyard, but you can get each cell pack for about $20 and each pack is 7.2 volts at its best but most run about 6.7V and about 6.5 amp hours.So 8 of them would give you 48V and 48 amp hours but no need for a BMS plus off season you can check each cell and either recondition or replace. That my plan I think, build two of those packs to run in series. Start with one see what my range is. then go from there. At 6 to 1 how is the torque stress on the motor as a guess? could you lower the ratio to run the motor at less throttle? Or is 5 to 1 about right for the motor torque wise

      @@philcostello6989 So just wanted to update, after doing a lot more research and correcting my math, the NiMH batteries are still a good option but not likely from a prius pack, I have found a different motor so I am going a different route. In the 70's GE and Wheel Horse made a tractor called an Elec Trak E20. the motor is a 36v 30 amp stabilized shunt motor, which means speed variation is going to be a little different type of control but at 5 knots on off is all I really need lol. I am going to pick up the motor this weekend, I am told it can run effiently as 24 or 36 volts, If it runs good at 24, I will carry 2 12 volt deep cell banks at 24V and when I have to switch them out, thats my turn back home point :-)

      I have four 12-volt batteries lead-acid I need the ballast so let out as it is fine and each of those batteries are 80 amp hours the total total battery cost was somewhere around $400

      I would really look at lithium batteries off the bat. I would also look at the over all efficiency going from battery to the ac power . And look at some of the ac safety concerns.

      I tried a few ! the one I use now is a simple halls sensor turn switch from Amazon. It’s sensitive I was also looking at a control to provide the signal and do it on Pad touch screen , but I decided I’d rather have a lever so now looking at a hall sensor lever

    I have a 1915 lifeboat that I converted to an inboard gas motor air cooled. It is a 1930-1940 Montgomery wards (Wisconsin) engine. I was thinking about trying electric. May I ask a few questions. How is the torque? I was planning on 1 to 1

      Hey Tom sounds like a really cool boat. I have almost six to one gear ratio reduction. Because I have a sailboat I'm already only worried about reaching hull speed which is about 3 to 4 knots. Because this is an electric motor and I have a gear reduction I have plenty of torque keeping in mind max speed is no more than 5 knots at at great draw on batteries.. I am using 4 12 volt lead acid batteries and series they are deep cycle eveready brand with 80 amp hr storage. Good luck and Id love to see some pictures of your project !

      just wanted to give you a heads up I've been reading up and learning on the batteries a lot more I always thought when you read the amp hours on the letter I said batteries you got the full amount but in order to not discharge the battery and only use half of that. I never really found that out cruising because I would just take the sailboat in and out. the other thing I found out was there are different discharge curves so the batteries can be very misleading lead acid that is the time it lasts is based on how fast it's being discharged and you have to look at the specific curve on that specific battery so be careful

I'm working on a similar project (same size boat) and was wondering if you could perhaps anwer a couple of questions: Firstly, do I understand correctly that it draws only 8 amps (so about 400W) at 4 knots? So it can run on your batteries for 5-6 hours then? Secondly, have you considered the axial forces on the shaft? In normal (diesel) setups, the axial forces push on the engine which is mounted to the boat. It appears you only use normal bearings which cannot take axial loads. For a boat like yours, axial forces will be around 100-200 N (or about 10-20 kg), which is quite a lot. You are not using a thrust bearing, are you? Oh, and does your motor get very hot after longer use? Thanks!

      So I didn't use my amp meter I had a Amazon read out that I bought the voltage was right but I never double check the amperage it did say apps. I did confirm the four knots with my GPS. So my shaft is bronze events 1 in 1/8 diameter ironically enough the motor was not attached to the boat it was just attached to the shaft the balance from the push and pull on the chain kept it in place as long as I didn't have a real jerky acceleration and there was no need to in the boat. I suppose the axial load for the system was placed at the point of the prop pushing against the stanchion in the water to move the boat along . At that point I did not have a neck seal bearing thrust bearing to to not be an issue for me. keep in mind my design was not for blue water sailors was just for me and my weekend warrior in and out of the boat slip so I could sailthough I didn't counter any undue vibration or underwear when I looked at the prop in this the engine as a matter of fact I didn't really even see any of the paint worn off that all seemed to be held tightly together. If you're buying that motor I would suggest a different controller. I bought it cuz it was an expensive as a package but I always question the fact that it was 1800 watts and if you do the calculation that would be about 50 amps 32 which is what the controllers rated for I'm not an electrical engineer but it just didn't seem right I'd be interested to see what your design is in what you're working on I could always use some ideas I've made some modifications from going in the water this year hopefully I'll be in by the end of the month I ended up getting a new Yang king 80 amp controller but I'm going to be testing out and hopefully that'll give me more power back words that also has a Bluetooth option for control which is kind of cool I got that on I think I got it on eBay from China but it might have been AliExpress

The project will probably be finished in about 8 weeks. When it's done, I will upload a video to youtube and put the link here.

      For me the motor mounting was easier and I wand a mechanical reduction to boost the mechanical advantage at the lower prop speed . Not sure I needed to do it but seemed to be the right thing to do at the time.
      The lead acid battery's were fine for me cause I needed ballast. I have 4 80 ah lead acid. Batteries I also have solar panels so don't have to worry about charging for my weekend outtings

      Hi Michael thanks for watching, the video. there are some companies out there that are doing belt drive with a fixed mount in the hull using motors that have high horsepower. I think the issue would be the battery storage needed for a 200 horse more than the motor and the mount itself. Companies like Lynch motor or elco Marne propulsion , deep blue, electric motor inboard Evoy . I would look at all these companies get all the information you can and then see what would work for you either DIY or through one of these guys. That's my thought some of these forms of people that are a lot more knowledgeable than me though
