    I cant believe I didn't think to look this up until today. I modified a wood screen door from home depot to fit my door opening years ago, and I added to the door jamb jamb to use double action (saloon door hinges). I cant believe nobody else thinks of this, but I created a screen door you can walk out AND IN through just pushing with your shoulder, hip, arm or hand. You know, so you can walk IN the door with your hands full too.
    But, for the door to swing inward, you have to block out the hinge side of the door enough that the screen door can swing in without binding on the actual door. This means even the trimmable screen doors available have to be ripped down...and ripped down so much it makes them weak. Over time the way they are made, it started warping and sagging.
    Getting a custom screen door made is ridiculously expensive. Some people I approached never bothered to get back with me...they figured I would never pay that much I guess.
    Did you use the pocket hole jig only on that one spot because you had already assembled the piece above it? Looks like you were screwing in to the ends from the outside on most joints. That's what I would like to do, screw everything from the ends and probably use two screws at each joint, along with glue.
    The other thing is, the saloon hinges can only handle so much weight so keeping the door very light is important, otherwise I'd have to double up on the hinges (they only come in a pack of 2).

    I like the door, how is or has it held up? I need a new one for my back porch, I don't like the ones at the big box stores, over 100 dollars and very cheaply made.

    I'm in process of building your screen door--slightly modified. Your concept is really is easy and perfect for my newbie skill set. Used two 8 ft 2 x 4's because they cost less where I live than one 8 ft 2 x 6. Also I was able to get 1-1/8 inch wide strips instead of 1 inch, plus 6 full strips instead of 5, Made it entirely with pocket screws and no glue. Two screws per joint. Solid as a rock. Ready for screen and trim now. I see you cut your screen trim with a band saw. I'm too new at woodworking to understand why you used a band saw for your screen trim rather than a table saw. Is 1/4 inch too thin to cut safely on a table saw?

    • @Shopcat22
      @Shopcat22  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome. Sounds like you are killing it. As for the band saw... no reason really. lol Glad this project was helpful to you.

    Well done. I have the same chore sitting on my "To Do" list. Curiosity question: For the hinges you used flat-head screws on the frame side and round-head on the door side. Was there a reason for that, beyond "that's what I had in the shop"?

    • @Shopcat22
      @Shopcat22  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. You are exactly right. The old screws were rusted and rather than paint them, I just used what I had laying around.

      I do not. I just make videos of the stuff I make for our house. Any decent woodworker or general contractor should be able to make you one though. Just give them the dimensions you need and tell them how you want it. Hope that helps a bit.

      Summers Woodworking lol. Sorry. I ripped them down to 1". So they ended up being 1.5x1. Very skinny for a door frame, but the idea was to see if I could make it out of a single 2x6.

    drilling the pocket holes before the unit is partially assembled is a lot easier :)
    No doubt the screen started to sag within a year, what did you do to correct this, if anything.

    • @Shopcat22
      @Shopcat22  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree on the pocket holes beforehand, but they were never intended for this project. It was kind of an after thought. As far as the sag, we lived there for another 2 years before we moved and it never sagged, so it's hard to say.

      First of all... wonky is one of my favorite words, so that made me smile. Second, I really have to go through the pile at Lowes or Menards to find them. Look at them from the end, all the way down the board. If you take your time you'll be able to find one.
