- Welcome to Jafffa Adventures where Jill and Terry run through what we carry in our bug out bag. What is a bug out bag? It is a small portable bag that carries all the items that we would need to sustain ourselves in an emergency situation.
If you like overlanding, if you like remote unspoiled places, if you like 4WD action, then this is the place to be.

Nice ideas - metal cup for drinking and boiling that water from the creek in the background (filter thru your sock first to get the big chucks and leaves out - then place on a the fire)
Good stuff mate, cheers👍😎
Another great and extremely useful video!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Terry!
Safe travels 🖖
Cheer Max, I’m glad you found some value mate. Go well👍😎
Just as a passing comment - in the old days before sat phones etc / when they were prohibitively expensiove, I used to carry an airband VHF radio. A good friend and Qantas pilot talked me into that one. Very little of Aust is not traversed by commercial aircraft and they all monitor 121.5 MHz constantly - air distress channel. As he said, no one is going to mind a call on that channel if you are in serious trouble. In fact old epirbs transmitted on that channel. Also he said they could locate you as well.
That’s cool information mate, thanks for sharing 👍😎
@@JafffaAdventuresHe used to say "I fly over all those places you drive and there's absolutely bloody nothing there"
@rossbeck1595 that’s gold mate 😂😂
Gday Terry, great video guys but the acting at the start was superb 👌👌😂
Ok now I’m just embarrassed mate😉😂. Thanks for watching Brent😎👍
Great video!
My suggestion would be names of people on board, medical ailments, prescription medication, blood type etc.
Next of Kin contact details too could be handy.
That’s a great suggestion Mike, thanks for sharing 👍😎
One thing that I carry is a 100x100 polished stainless flat plate reflection device instead of a small mirror that could smash. Boats need to carry one for safety requirement
Great idea, thanks for sharing😎👍
I would put in some cordage such as paracord so that if you're stranded you could tie up your space blanket or rescue sheet for some shade.
I also have a bushcraft style knife with a ferro rod and sharpener in the sheath or maybe a multi tool could be useful. A torch or head torch would also be handy.
Some protein type bars etc for a bit of sustenance if you're stuck for a day or two as well.
I'm not sure how your sat phone is charged but a phone battery bank and a cable could come in handy. One of mine has a solar cell built into it but I suspect it will only charge it very slowly.
On a different note the latest iPhones, and likely Android by now, have an app that allows you to contact emergency services via text over the satellite network as well as other contacts.
Not a replacement for the items you have but maybe another layer of security.
Good suggestions mate. I carry a leatherman on me so no need for that in my bug out bag but the point is well made. Thanks for sharing 😎👍
Excellent information. A few years ago our car broke down 2 hrs out of Birdsville into the desert, we were able to make contact with a local cattle station with out UHF, they contacted the recovery in Birdsville and they sent a recovery truck. So in our outback a UHF is invaluable. I include a good survival knife
Great real life story Harold, thanks for sharing. I carry a leatherman on me so don’t need a knife in the bug out bag, but your point is well made. Cheers😎👍
Great Video and helpful information. The Spray Bottle is a good idea as it has more than one use. Spray yourself on a hot day, quick shower, and clean car windows as well as Fire fighting. Uses minimal water.
I like it mate, more than one use per item carried is gold, cheers😎👍
Some great tips... I bet there's not many who have some contingencies in place for when the sh*t hits the fan and things can go very wrong.....
I agree mate, I have not seen too many people carry a bug out bag. I trust we will never need it but it’s nice to know it’s there. Cheers😎👍
20mx3mm rope , has a breaking strain of 100kg around $5 from Bunnings , weighs nothing , with a knife may come in handy to make a shelter ETC , Cheers keep up the good videos .....
Good suggestions Dave, thanks for sharing. I carry a leatherman so don’t need that in my kit, but if you don’t a knife is very handy. Thanks for sharing 😎👍
A small pocketknife and a larger knife , maybe a waterpurifier and a one liter bottle sturidy in which you could boil water, some meters of paracord. Get a first aid training course done befor the trip, a first aid kit is good, but if you dont know the basics...
I agree, first aid training is indispensable. I carry a Leatherman on me so don’t need that in the bug out bag😎👍
We can have the same in our bag but also a life straw for water in an emergency they take up no room
Good one mate👍😎
Bingo !! A great subject & Share!!👍👍 I was about to say a Space blanket, but you got there. We have a wind up torch (no batteries needed) a tarp & some para cord (shade can be a huge issue out in the sticks!) I notice someone else has already mentioned a mirror (also part of a boaties kit) I never thought of a small laser torch for at night! Also so make sure there is some plastic of some kind (the bag for the Vee sheet or something else or even just a few freezer bags) they will make water if you pop them over a branch of leaves & tie them off, but I bet you already know that one. (EDIT: I just noticed someone has also mentioned that!) That kinda takes me to knowledge. As I'm an ex scouter, I would like to think I have a few skills. That includes being able to tie knots, find or make water, find food, even make a snare to catch something to eat if need be which is something we also have in our bug out bag.... Food!! while the long life dehydrated stuff doesn't taste real good, if you needed it, I bet you'd be thankful to have it. I'm fortunate enough to have done hands on bush survival as a young bloke, getting sent out with bugger all & expected to come back! Oh!! Yes, we have a pack of cards too! I laughed when I saw them come out. One of my biggest takes with all this (like packing any 4wd I guess) is thinking of multiple uses for everything. If only our wind up torch could charge a hand held UHF or a sat phone, that would be great, though buy good quality items usually means their batteries last a long time between charges (so people, don't forget to charge those items "before" you go!) I do have a few other things from my scouting days, like a decent knife but that would just get boring!! I would never have thought of the spray bottle either! 👍Cheers!!
I’m with you Rod, if you have more than one use for an item, that is gold right there. Thanks for sharing your experience mate, I and I am sure others, appreciate it very much. Cheers😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures What I didn't mention about my hand held, it has many uses (far more than you would think) Is it is actually a handheld HAM radio with VHF etc (frequencies for aircraft & marine) I also have it programmed with the usual 80 UHF CB channels (which technically is outside of it's range but they all work, it's the custom programming that makes the difference😁 ) & it can also listen to FM radio, not that you are likely to find a station in the middle of nowhere. Of course you must have a HAM licence to be able to transmit on some the frequencies but in the case of an emergency I'm sure you'd worry about that later. I figure being able to raise help via HF (even though it is down on power compared to my 100w one in my 4wd) plus the UHF channels or even talk to aircraft (which could be the RFDS?) it's such a versatile little radio I just have to have it in my grab bag, but I have to remember to put it in there! (oh! I also have it programmed with the 3 private channels that we have licences for, for running our event) I love my tech & communications. I'm looking forward to gaining satellite coverage on my mobile via Space X soon (text only for this year) but that is a start! The PLB's & Sat phones will soon be redundant with a standard mobile being able to connect to a satellite 500kms away just like another phone tower (I shit you not!!) The future is looking promising for remote communications, that's for sure with remote mobile internet due next year (space X launched another rocket today sending up more satellites 😉) Cheers & thanks for another great video 👍........................ (I talk too much, sorry!!)
@LimestoneCoastCustoms I love my tech too mate, things are advancing so fast. It will be awesome when all mobile phones will be satellite phones, that’s not too far off👍😎
Brilliant Terry, I have a grab bag with similar contents in my boat
Good idea mate😎👍
A pocket knife would be a great addition to the bugout bag.
I agree Peter. I carry a leatherman on my so I don’t need one in my kit, but if you don’t it’s a great addition. Thanks for sharing 😎👍
G'day Terry, a couple of items, a stainless mirror for signalling aircraft in daytime & a couple of sheets of plastic & or garbage bags to make a water still using foliage.
Thanks Ian. I like the ideas. The stainless mirror is a great backup to my laser pointer, and rhetorical sheets a great backup to my jerry that I pull off the back of the vehicle 👍😎
@@JafffaAdventures
You don’t want to point a laser beam at a pilot (big penalties). A Jerry in Oz could mean a pee pot aka guzunda aka chamber pot lol. (Goes under the bed).
3 smoky fires lit apart is the distress signal.
Thanks for the heads up. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Thanks for the feedback Grahame, I appreciate it very much 😎👍
Disposable poncho for the rain. Tiny and lightweight but massive benifits. More than ONE use when you want to MacGyver something. 👍
Cheers👍
Boat signal flares or smoke flares
Cheers😎👍
A army ration pack or 2 would be good.
Cool Andrew. I carry a dozen or so ration packs around my waist so I won’t starve😂😉
Some people keep condoms in their first aid kit. They are a good compact vessel for water storage!
Hmm, I think I’ll pass on that one mate😉😎
Maybe you carry a small knife at your belt, otherwise put one in the bag?
Leatherman 24/7 on the belt.😊
Yes indeed, I carry a leather an on me but your point is well made. Cheers😎👍
Absolutely 😎👍
1. Snake bit kit does help you survive snake bites.
2. Get a tourniquet.
3. Get a IFAK kit similar to what military are issued
4. Water purifying tabs, dirty water strainer
5. Pencil/ permanent marker write time/date on body of snake bite or when tourniquet applied
GO DO A FIRST AID COURSE
First aid course is a must👍
