Concrete and Live Edge Outdoor Dining Table

    This outdoor table build represents an entirely new approach for me as I blend glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) with epoxy sealed live edge spalted maple. That top, is then mounted to a very classic castle jointed and shou sugi ban base, finished with an outdoor varnish to create a solid, durable, outdoor patio dining table that is perfect for withstanding the elements. This is an awesome looking outdoor dining table that will brighten up any outdoor space such as a dull patio and be an absolute conversation piece if you're into outdoor entertainment. This is not your traditional DIY project as it tests a lot of different making skills, but it certainly can be done with some more dialed down tools than what I'm using in the video. The shou sugi ban technique is not only functional in its resistance to the elements, but also aesthetically pleasing as it compliments the outdoor table top perfectly. It's my hope that a process like this will inspire you to push yourself to experiment with different mediums and blending techniques of classic furniture making with more modern aesthetics. From a materials perspective, this only ran me about $300 in materials, which includes the finish, concrete, fasteners, and lumber. Concrete furniture is certainly much more approachable than I anticipated. Enjoy!

    Beautiful work, I've been experimenting with GFRC as well. You certainly have an eye for detail and it's nice to see a true craftsman at work. I didn't know about the real milk tung oil and will have to try it on my next piece.

    • @CowDogCraftWorks
      @CowDogCraftWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing I’ll say about Gfrc is that you should definitely err on the side of thicker. I’ve had some smaller pieces snap if you’re picking them by the edge instead of supporting it properly. Tung oil is great. I’ve been using it as more of a furniture finish lately. I’ve started to layer on thinner coats which helps with cure times and better protection, instead of just dumping the bottle on there like I did. About 10-12 thin coats over a week or so does the trick.

    How did this hold up? I have some black walnut pieces that I need to use, and I really want to do a table this way. With the expansion/contraction of the wood, do you have any separation or did the epoxy maintain its adhesion to the concrete?

    • @CowDogCraftWorks
      @CowDogCraftWorks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The epoxy maintained its adhesion but… do not place anything hot on the epoxy without a trivet of some kind… wife let a citronella candle burn to the base of the can and well… it created problems.

  • @Ole_ks
    @Ole_ks 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hi Adam. How is your table now? Any issues after few years outdoor, especially at wood/concrete contact line? I consider making similar design for my kitchen countertop.

    • @CowDogCraftWorks
      @CowDogCraftWorks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So there are issues… but not at the specific line you’re addressing. Be wary of your spouse placing anything hot on the epoxy. Mine let a citronella candle in a metal bucket burn on it all night. Epoxy melted under it. If you do it for a countertop I would strongly enforce trivets in the household.

    Great design, inspired lots of ideas for creative use of mixed mediums. Also a great video details both how and why of all the steps! One question: why not embed the inlaid plywood under the table top right into the concrete to ensure an even top?

    • @CowDogCraftWorks
      @CowDogCraftWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Top is going to be even either way based on the mold. But yes I could have embedded the plywood substrate directly into the concrete if I wanted to. Probably would have been better to use marine grade plywood in that instance.

    Great job brother, I just found your channel and it's awesome to see another sfla hobbyist woodworker. I do have a question where do you get your hardwood lumber from ? I'm in Palm Beach County and I'm having a hard time finding some good quality stuff.

    • @CowDogCraftWorks
      @CowDogCraftWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man! So if it's dimensional hardwoods you're looking for I've got two spots here in Fort Lauderdale: Leon General Hardwoods and Woodchip Lumber. They're about a stone's throw from each other. If you're looking for live edge slabs my friend PJ Fetscher @pj_fetscher on instagram is a good source. He's a local sawyer.

      trying to figure out exactly what you put in the hopper when you sprayed before putting the concrete on top

    • @CowDogCraftWorks
      @CowDogCraftWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a GFRC concrete mix. The company I got it from doesn’t ship but there’s a company called fish stone (worth a google) that makes a similar product line... and they do ship. I’d shoot them a call and they’ll set you up with everything you need. The modifier is basically a catalyst.
