There's a thing called a 'sting ray' (i believe that's what's its called). It's basically a surveillance truck that can intercept wireless communications ie cell phone calls. It's becoming common practice for prisons to do a sting ray sweep to pick up prison cell phone calls for obvious reasons. They don't have to physically tap your phone if it's a cell phone, they just need to pinpoint the location of the phone and they can hear pretty much anything.
It won't work on every cellphone, and if you're talking over a Bluetooth device, it definitely can't pick up [if for any reason, they break between that Bluetooth connection , the , the Bluetooth will drop the call immediately. So therefore if that Bluetooth keeps dropping calls like every 2 minutes or so constantly, it's definitely someone trying to break in between the call]
