This is becoming the norm again where we are distracted by scrolling and just listening to media. I refuse, I just promise my self that I will sit still and read an hour day…
My Black owned bookstore ( Printed Word, Portsmouth VA) is similar to the local library for kids as we host STORYTIME as well as BOYZ in the Books and Men Read 📚 book club. Her story is awesome and necessary 👏🏿!!!
These stories give me so much inspiration! Living in an area which, at one time, bolstered a 25% black community, has now been whittled down to 5%. Anytime I see black creativity and expression at this level, I get empowered! Great job to all involved!
I try to visit as many Black owned book stores in whichever town/city I visit/live in the world. I was taught to read from very young, so I am used to regular bookstores. It's rare to see BO bookstores, so I try to support wherever I can. Thanks for showing us Ida. It's sad to hear you're having to give up your lease. Peace
Sista, I love your passion, faith and excitement with which you run your store. I am a German foreign language teacher who studied African-American women's literature at Indiana University and wrote my Masters thesis on Black women's identity as featured in the works of Paule Marshall and Toni Morrison and later worked as a lecturer in NigeriaI teach 12th grade Intensive English in high-school and no matter what is on the curriculum, I always, always include a poem by Maya Angelou , my all-time source of inspiration and creativity, a quote on the value of storytelling by Alice Walker, the famous lecture of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in my own personal curriculum. Due to the current political circumstances in the US at the moment, I have no intention of visiting your country in the next four years. But if I ever make it across the Atlantic, I will make sure to come to your bookstore, fill my traveling bag with all the books that you recommend and give you a big hug. May you always walk in beauty. ❤Antje Meko, Bremen, Germany
I seen this video on here in my feed for some reason and I said to myself, "She's my great niece, one of the three I think!" I'm uncle DMC, one of the twins and uncle to your dad A who your mom C always called J. I could be wrong but you look exactly like C and A. Congratulations on your new journey and I'm proud of you.
@@denniebone388 yes the middle one, Jeannine, who you cooked with and drew for and took to the store-thanks for being a fun uncle growing up-my dad passed away in October didn’t know how to reach you. This is amazing.
@jeanninecook4444 Sorry to hear that about your father I didn't know. May he rest in power and find peace with God. I'm going to call the store and give you my number. Denise and I don't speak, haven't in years but she knows how to reach me and could've told me this.
Love from South Africa!!❤visited NJ last August, would have loved to have popped in. Interested in getting in touch, can anyone assist with connecting me with her? I'm a blogger and journalist would love to profile her work and bookstore🙏🏾

Find a book on a topic that "Inspires..." you. (preferably in an American Black owned👍🏾book store in 2025) (like this one) that you want to know more about... (for instance) psychology money cooking relationships astrology numerology building etc... & like your infinite mind... the 🌎 of book topics is limitless 👍🏾 You are always more intelligent than any limiting & false beliefs.
None of the things in this comments section means nothing if you don't or won't respect and love all elders.. Our Society is doomed with out there knowledge being taught threw out every generation. Young people today talk to much. Learn to listen or we will reap what we soe
We're the most intellectual, with that being said can you all help me with a list of powerful books by us for us...I'll start with BLACK INVENTIONS by Keith C. Holmes
I'm just going to put this out now just because I don't respond right away just know I appreciate all that leave a book's title with the name of the author, I'm just going to let them build up then respond
Who cares if "we" are the most intelligent. We got nothing to show for it. Please read your way out of ignorance for your own sake. I would suggest getting a math book or intro to logic book as a start...plenty of black people in those fields
This lady is one example of the opposite. Stereotypes exist for a reason. I have seen kids ganging up on one kid for studying and getting good grades. They were accusing him of “trying to be white”. I also saw a video someone put out where the same thing was happening to another kid on the other side of the country. I’ve never seen a young scholar breaking into a bookstore for the hunger to read. There’s videos plastered everywhere of these young scholars helping themselves to shoes, clothes, tv’s, phones…but never food and MOST DEFINITELY!…NEVER BOOKS!!! When there’s a certain percentage of any type of people, seen doing or not doing a thing, a stereotype happens. It’s important to call those out because they make it bad on the rest. Denying, defending, making excuses, covering up for others poor behavior only makes the whole group look worse.
You spoke the gospel. The delusions we spread are wild. We are DEFINITELY THE MOST anti-intellectual culture there is. No question. These disingenuous videos are yet ANOTHER example of our excuse-making.

If ever in the 757 of Virginia, stop by the PRINTED WORD.
I tried to support this business several times, they were always closed and no customer service. I hope they have grown.
Love a nice small neighborhood bookstore. Salute to the sista!
Love this ❤.. Yes we are intellectual people! ❤️.. keeping pushing sister.

Beautiful story. Encouraging. Sending light, love and will go on line to purchase 💚🖤❤
Sister just keep up the good work reading is very important and we have a long history dating back 10000 years
I would live in her bookstore 📚📖
This is such a lovely story. Wishing her all the best. I wish I was in the area.
I'm going to have to visit this shop this year. Very cool. Kind of close to Philadelphia too.
I think it's wonderful that the bookstore is named after Ida B.Wells! I have a 25 cents collector's stamp of her.
✌🏿 we need reading & Applying knowledge more...its being lost in younger culture which is highly distracted😪😪😪
Excellent 💯✊🏾
Love this & look forward to visiting at some point.
Will be volunteering with NAACP. Will bring in this idea.
Love it 🎉🎉🎉
