"GeoNeilUK, N64 was dark grey, almost black if I remember correctly." There were several coloured models of the N64, the most common colour being grey, not black. "There was a black model of GameCube" There were several coloured models of the GameCube, the most common colour being purple. "the Wii and Wii U." Whose white models are far more common, especially the Wii. "The Switch is also mostly dark grey or black." First proper example. Being lightly coloured or even white has never stopped Nintendo being successful, in fact their most successful consoles (NES, SNES, Wii) were lightly coloured (as I said, the white Wii was far more common than the black Wii) and out of those three the SNES (at least the European/Japanese SNES) was the best looking.
Gun smoke. One of the first ever games I encountered at an arcade. A guy used to play it and he was pretty good at it but I even forgot It existed. I just remembered looking at the footage. Some 27/29 years later
This review underestimated the Super Retrocade badly and what it's really capable of. This device is awesome especially if you have a dual arcade stick. I legally own hundreds of Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and other 80's and 90's arcade games. I put all the games I own in rom form. It's much better than my emulation station/retroarch combo on my laptop. More options and better compatibility. Plus I can play everything through smooth hdmi and full screen on my curved monitor and plug in some gaming speakers. I also put everything from my Famicom Mini on it. Awesome device.
If you mod the hell out of it, and use a bunch of peripherals and accessories that didn't even come with it, sure, it's great. But at that point, you're not even using the device. You're using your own stuff on this device's hardware. I'd say it's still fair to say this thing kinda sucks overall, as is.
I don't know why those who hack and load would bother doing it to this device? They seemingly just want to hack and load everything. They'd hack and load a toaster if they could.
The emulation on some of the games makes those games almost unplayable. Too slim or too stretched screen ratio makes the vertical shmups horrible to play also.
Armored Warriors is notable for being the prequel to Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness, which DID get a japanese saturn port. Although Jeff Perkins never got to see the light of day in other capcom titles, the man who inherited the AEX-10M BLODIA certainly did, as Jin Satome got to bump fists with some of Marvel and Capcom's finest in MVC and MVC2
thanks for mentioning the title of armored warriors. I used played it back then in arcades but could never remember what it was called nowadays and it has been bothering me everytime that game comes to mind.
8:06 thank you very much! I've been looking for this arcade title for more than 15 years (last time I played it on a real arcade) also... Armored Warriors and Boogie Wings are new great recommendations to try on MAME. Best regards from Argentina!
This thing is awesome if you have little kids and you want to allow them to explore and enjoy the classics but don’t want them to ruin your pi. I personally really like my Super Retro Cade. The only down side is having to scroll through every game to find the one your want. That isn’t so bad if you are only playing the 90 games it comes with. But if you play games off the sd card...hoooboy.
The GPL does not prohibit commercial use. From the emulation shown here... NES emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (FCEUmm) Arcade emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (several versions of MAME) I don't know that console the console version of Mercs is, if it's the SNES, then AFAIK the only GPL'd emulator that can do SNES is MAME (as MESS) though I've personally never used MAME for that, I preferred it when MESS was a separate project.
Sega controllers work really well with this console and the bundled controllers aren't that bad. I bought this console from this review and I love it. I've added over 50 snes and sega games that all run perfectly. The loads and saves also run faster when the game stays paused as opposed to still running
To play Final Fight, Secret Agent, Double Dragon and Vigilante's arcade versions was reason enough for me to buy this thing. Got it for €40,- not a bad deal 👍
Also the NES Classic obviously has to upscale, too, so that's a good example as well. I actually think that the blurred upscale is better. Pixels never were too sharp on real oldschool hardware. Even if the transfer to the CRT would have been perfect (which it wasn't), the CRT itself would round pixels and blur things a bit. Many games look quite frankly pretty horrible with sharp pixels, in my opinion.
Great review. I wonder how well it plays classic late 70's-early 80's arcade games. And I wish they would have included the ability for it to play roms from older consoles like the Atari 2600 and 7600, Colecovision and Intellevision.
Those games were horrible and are best placed in our memory; my introduction to Atari was 'Adventure'. Today its unplayable. I wanna remember it like a kid, as 'the best game I'd played'.
The problem isn't that the resolution is being upscaled but rather that they're using android with retroarch as the emulator and it has bilinear filtering enabled by default making everything blurry
Great news about the system being much better than the Generations!! Was excited to hear about the release of this one but was nervous after getting the Generations. Still preordered it the Retrocade now just waiting till next Friday to get mine. Any news on the DLC or firmware updates they mentioned in their latest press release?
Hey Shane! I was wondering about that full-screen bit: maybe it was aimed towards users, that just like me, are willing to tilt their screens in 90 degree? I guess it still do not perfectly fit to the original arcade aspect ratio, but have to look much better than this stretched abomination :D At least that's (with screen tilted) how I play pretty much every arcade port I bought on Steam on my 16:10 NEC. Either way you're right: it's still better than no choice at all :)
@7:00 a lot of NES emulators purposely wash out like that. CRT screens would blur and round out the pixels, making the now-nostalgic 8-bit art a bit of an anachronism. You'd never have seen Megaman 2 as crisp as the NES classic outputs on an original setup.
Was the cable you used with the controller that flat grey one in the video? It looks like an 8bitdo cable which I'm pretty sure only carries power and no data, which is why it wouldn't work. Did you try any other cables?
If by cheap hardware you mean an ARM SoC, then yeah. Don't know what you mean by the PC version of MAME, if you mean the Windows version, then not only would they have to build it from more expensive X86 parts, but they'd also have to licence Windows, which would probably triple the price. Why do that if a cheap as chips ARM SoC that you'd stick in a £40 smartphone will do and you can get AOSP for free? I mean, come on, you're emulating 20-30 year old arcade and console games. It doesn't need to play Crysis!
Yes, the Windows version of MAME. I'm not even sure if they are paying the license for any of the emulators on this system. If they did, they should have the latest build source of MAME. The ARM SoC hardware would explain why MAME is running as it is in that console.
Well, they don't need to buy a licence for MAME or even RetroArch, they're both GPL'd and can be just taken and used. The only other platform I definitely saw being emulated was the NES and again, there are GPL'd emulators for that which you can take for free. It's only when you get into things like the MegaDrive or the SNES where all the emulators have a no commercial use clause or the Amiga, PSX or Dreamcast where you need copyrighted firmware to get it working when you need to get the lawyers and chaequebook.
That's the main draw for me with these emulation boxes, well *OFFICIAL* emulation boxes, compared to just emulating off my computer or a Raspberry Pi is that I'm able to support these developers, which I obviously am probably not able to if I'm running these off of MAME or something like that. I already have an SNES Mini and am actually planning to get the NES Mini because I care more about it now, so I'm probably gonna get into looking into the Retro-cade as well. Kind of a shame that I won't be able to use my new BotW PowerA Switch controller, though.
You know this licensed product is using stolen roms downloaded from the internet and a stolen version of retroarch with non-commercial license cores such as FBA, Gamebattle, and Genesis Plus GX to name a few.
Yeah supporting thieves you mean? They licensed the games and stole all of the software to run it. Ra and mame Devs get nothing and walked all over. None of these companies have enough gall to actually spend the time and money to make their own software.
I never said I didn't want to support MAME or anything like that. I thought that it most likely that RetroBit *did* get the rights to these games. Holy crap, guys!
The two NES games I test to see how well the D-pad is are Ninja Gaiden and Contra. Those two games pretty much give me an idea on how well it will be. Button layouts just need getting use to. Oh yeah, I also like testing it out on Street Fighter 2 and MK
How can you play games like Heavy Barrel & Midnight Resistance which both used the rotary joystick? Is there a special rotary joystick usb controller that you can buy to play all those rotary joystick games on MAME like Ikari Warriors, Victory Road, etc.?
Amazing video, man! That said, I think I will stick to my plans of picking up a Raspberry Pi 3 model B for my retro needs! :) This thing seems shoddily built.
I saw on another video there is a way to play other games via the SD card. Also I'm hoping the internal hardware on the Dreamcade is identical to the Generations. That way maybe us Generations owners that were disappointed can hopefully upgrade at some point.
I'm now wanting an HD remake of Boogie Wings & Armoured Warriors!

Just ordered mine! I'm sure it won't be perfect, but I'm sure it'll be good enough. Love retro games, especially the arcade version of Double Dragon...which is the main reason I bought it!
Theres many originals that are kickin like chicken,Kicker,Gauntlet,Street Fighter 2 in several flavors,Galaga,Robotron,Centipede,Galaxian,Gorf,Defender,Wizard of War,Bump & Jump, and Joust
Why White tho?
Who...has a white 55 in tv in their living room?
Then don't buy it.
When did Nintendo ever make a black console?
GeoNeilUK, N64 was dark grey, almost black if I remember correctly. There was a black model of GameCube, the Wii and Wii U. The Switch is also mostly dark grey or black.
"GeoNeilUK, N64 was dark grey, almost black if I remember correctly."
There were several coloured models of the N64, the most common colour being grey, not black.
"There was a black model of GameCube"
There were several coloured models of the GameCube, the most common colour being purple.
"the Wii and Wii U."
Whose white models are far more common, especially the Wii.
"The Switch is also mostly dark grey or black."
First proper example.
There were black Wii's and Wii U's
Gun smoke. One of the first ever games I encountered at an arcade. A guy used to play it and he was pretty good at it but I even forgot It existed. I just remembered looking at the footage. Some 27/29 years later
FYI, the NES version is surprisingly good too.
Literally just got this in the mail an hour ago and I love it so far. So good had to comment. I bought it after watching this review
Also found a way to add mame roms to it and it's even better now
And even better at running sega roms
It's on Capcom classic arcade collection
11:47 “Warning: Not found save state.” *“Yes”*
Did Retro-bit ask for permission to use RetroArch? I recognize that save state font at the bottom. I have a lot of doubts on the licensing of that.
LuigiBlood The interface looks like the Retron 5 as well, which did rip off RetroArch...
they should stop promoting these kind of stuff, specially if they are sold with the non-commercial use software.
RetroArch is released under the GPL, Retro-Bit don't need the developers permission.
that does not state anywhere about selling software though!
The GPL does not prohibit commercial use.
From the emulation shown here...
NES emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (FCEUmm)
Arcade emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (several versions of MAME)
I don't know that console the console version of Mercs is, if it's the SNES, then AFAIK the only GPL'd emulator that can do SNES is MAME (as MESS) though I've personally never used MAME for that, I preferred it when MESS was a separate project.
I like your love and respect for DPads
Sega controllers work really well with this console and the bundled controllers aren't that bad. I bought this console from this review and I love it. I've added over 50 snes and sega games that all run perfectly. The loads and saves also run faster when the game stays paused as opposed to still running
To play Final Fight, Secret Agent, Double Dragon and Vigilante's arcade versions was reason enough for me to buy this thing. Got it for €40,- not a bad deal 👍
"The ones that came with the counsel did work" lol I sure hope so buddy
Upscaling doesn’t always lead to soft edges. Look at the Framemeister or the OSSC.
I admire your appreciation for a proper D-pad
GamingDude800 You’re not wrong
The problem isn't that the resolution is being upscaled but rather that they're using android with retroarch as the emulator and it has bilinear filtering enabled by default making everything blurry
Great news about the system being much better than the Generations!! Was excited to hear about the release of this one but was nervous after getting the Generations. Still preordered it the Retrocade now just waiting till next Friday to get mine. Any news on the DLC or firmware updates they mentioned in their latest press release?
I appreciate your researched honest opinion👏
Interresting seeing you review more :) Your indepth analysis and honesty is refreshing.
Especially your proffesional side.
Thanks great review, you’ve made up my mind now, it’s definitely worth picking up 👍
Boogie Wings is like Indiana Jones, but it's all action
I love Armored Warriors! This deserves a console release, or Steam at least!
Who else just got done watching the retro bit gen and now this is on your subscription feed.
I cant wait for a console filled with LJN Games
Hold the phone YOUR NAME IS PRONOUNCED RE-REZ?
Some Guy yah lol
Yup! "Ree-rezz"
Did you think it was "rare-rez" like me? XD
I'm glad it's better than the Generations, looking forward to mine soon too.
I actually thought you'd already covered this. I was almost right.
I wonder if I can get this thing to work with my USB dance mat so I can dance my way to retro victory.
I could've sworn you had at least a million subs
Keep em coming Shane.
Such detailed review. Thanks man.
Looks pretty cool, I have been wanting a MAME plug and play home console.
So... it is a RetroArch box. That save-state load is a giveaway.
Did you try any other cables?
lol It is running the Android version of MAME. Not sure why they didn't go for the PC version of MAME. Probably using cheap hardware? That's my guess.
11:28 anyone know what that game is?
downphoenix nyet
Dark Seal 2 by Data East
That robot game looks pretty cool.
It's more visually interesting than the standard text list.
Great upload dude!!!
Watching this video makes me wanna buy this and i will, thank you
What is that spy style game at the end? I remember it being like james bond but its not caled that.
Sly Spy.
I’m still waiting for them to restock the super retro boy advance
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, ima big fan of your vids man, keep up!
Chaos89P what you say makes no sense... you want to support developers not MAME yet the retrocade is running MAME on Android.
But its a licensed product which means ur not stealing roms
The ability to add Roms Is a Huge Plus. 😊👌
Nice video, man!
The two NES games I test to see how well the D-pad is are Ninja Gaiden and Contra. Those two games pretty much give me an idea on how well it will be.
Button layouts just need getting use to.
Oh yeah, I also like testing it out on Street Fighter 2 and MK
I love this channel.
How can you play games like Heavy Barrel & Midnight Resistance which both used the rotary joystick? Is there a special rotary joystick usb controller that you can buy to play all those rotary joystick games on MAME like Ikari Warriors, Victory Road, etc.?
Those companies officially licensed their arcade titles to be sold on a system that also includes pirated console games?
I find that very surprising.
Well, I think I'm sold on this.
Well, consider me part of the "pleasantly surprised" crowd.
Boogie Wings looks like my kind of game. I mean, damn, it looks fun!
Amazing video, man! That said, I think I will stick to my plans of picking up a Raspberry Pi 3 model B for my retro needs! :) This thing seems shoddily built.
Great review, I love mine!
I do think they should add Banpresto and IGS to their selection of developers.
I saw on another video there is a way to play other games via the SD card. Also I'm hoping the internal hardware on the Dreamcade is identical to the Generations. That way maybe us Generations owners that were disappointed can hopefully upgrade at some point.
Awesome video! 🤘
