Thanks for the super educational video. We treated our grass for crab grass to find out it was not crab grass it was st agustine. You were very clear on how it looks and grows and I can now confirm it's st agustine with Bermuda. Thanks for video.

I would love to either one of the three but I just can't deal with it going dormant in the winter.

I remember looking up buffalo and finding that Sir Walter at an Australian website when you were planting the hill yard. I wanted to mention it was a darker green variety, ah but it's really a St. A not buffalo.

yep, that's one of the biggest areas of confusion as far as I see it. Sir Walter Buffalo is a variety of St Augustine and not the true Buffalograss that is native to North America. Cross checking scientific names on seed bags and seed literature confirm this.

What about Kikuyu grass’s invasiveness? Shouldn’t we not be doing invasive at all. I used to work at an arboretum and it was a real ethical situation.

If Australia refers to st Augustine grass as Buffalo, what do they call Buffalo grass

To my knowledge St Aug DOESNT have rhizomes. That’s why you have to be delicate with mowing height, chemicals and especially if you want to renovate. Scalp low BAD, verticut BAD well you have to be careful. It is stolen based only. Come on man you’re the turf mechanic. I know your primary cool weather grass guy. You did the same thing with herbicides earlier in the year.

Ohh man, you're right, I totally messed that up. St Aug is only stolon and no rhizomes, I may have to edit that reference out, that was a mistake for sure. As for the herbicides you mentioned what are you referring to?

@@TurfMechanic you spoke of using tenacity on warm season grass earlier in the season. That will smoke some warm season or knock it back real good. Love your channel just don’t want someone damaging their prize joy.

Thanks Tim, I'll make sure I pay super close attention to grass type references when I speak on tenacity on warm season turf. I could isolate a number of vids over the past 12 months where I made it very clear which types tenacity doesn't play well with but i may have forgot to make that distinction somewhere - I do publish a lot of unscripted content after all. Fyi to anyone reading this I've edited out the part of this video where I mistakenly referenced st augustine rhizomes. We all have brain farts and when I filmed this I obviously had one big one. 😂

I love that you're in Southern California now. There is almost no kikuyu/Buffalo grass info out there in the US.
I spent over a year thinking my kikuyu was centipede or St. Aug because it's never mentioned as a US turf grass.
Thanks for the content! I'm following along and following your lead on my ratty Kikuyu front lawn.

@@JIrvine03 I'm really excited to have this opportunity! Although I'm ultimately planning on switching as much of the lawn over to buffalo as possible I'm purposefully going to long-term maintain the yard space next to the neighbor as kikuyu to learn as much about it as possible and be that local resource to the millions in this region that have this stuff in their yards. First step is to bring it all back to dirt and remove the stems and old growth stolons. It'll all start coming back fresh especially now that we're well into April.
