Irelands greatest export has always been it's people. From the workers to the poets .. and this man's beautiful voice shines a light on our Story tellers . Rest in peace Mr Kelly, you will always be missed ✌
What a beautiful song. When i stress that nothing much phased Luke Kelly. But this song and 'Score not his simplicity'😙😙😙😙 made him very emotional and clearly upset the great man.Great songs for a great man
Beautiful, beautiful poem. Whoever transcribed the lyrics into subtitles mistook one letter that makes a difference in the meaning. It should be: "When the angel woos the CLAY he'd lose / His wings at the dawn of the day."
It's about unrequited love, a very young man who loved a woman long ago but had only "the gifts of the mind" to offer her. He made a mistake. Because he wasn't an angel but "a creature made of clay." And thus does the happiness of youth pass away ...
anyone cares to explain the meaning of the song? why was it played in "In Bruges" when the man was about to commit suicide! it doesn't make sense to me. this poem is about a failed love affair. the man in "In Bruges" lost his wife (the love of his life) in a murder; so, how is the song related to the scene in the movie?
Really great question. The Irish poet Yeats once wrote: "Rhetoric comes from our quarrel with others / Poetry from the quarrel with ourselves." The song relates to the movie so well because both are about the loss of innocence in youth. In other words, the song is not about the Brendan Gleeson character Ken but about the Colin Farrell character Ray. To Harry Waters, Ray has lost this innocence by mistakenly killing the little boy. But Ken believes that "the boy can change, the boy can be saved" -- by which he means that Ray HIMSELF is a boy. The moral and psychological drama of the film comes from the quarrel between Ken and Harry over when and how a boy becomes a man, and therefore no longer innocent. And that's what the SONG is about, and what makes it so bitterly sweet and ironic. It tells the story of a loss of virginity, spiritual if not physical -- a boy who comes to understand that he is not an angel but a man, and therefore, like the woman he loves, "a creature made of clay." Beautiful. Really.
Fifabuilder go back and play fortnite or fifa your a kid and u havent a clue about irish culture you over privileged moron and thats coming from an Irishman.
Brings a tear to the eyes of this 84 year old man who has never forgotten his unrequited love of 63 years ago.
I understand the pain of love that lives in your heart and that love never shall die ;)
Ahhh. You poor bastard. "I saw her first, and knew - That her dark hair, would weave a snare, that I might one day rue."
I'm almost there with you, brother. I'm 56 and mine was 30 years ago -- and I still think about her every day.
Sad times xx
That's so lovely, I hope you were loved back

The song is about a love of something you cant have and a realisation. can be applied to any story really.
Raglan Road happens when a great poets\ expounds on the subject of unrequited love.
Just enjoy
