I’ve been slowly trying to regain my flute playing recently. I’ve used cuts, taps, and rolls for decades, but developed my own style about playing without ever analyzing it. So I searched for taps on YT and found this video. I wanted to share my thoughts. In my head I thought I had been playing taps as you show in this video, but then I realized I was doing a more complicated version of taps. I was playing Abbey Reel where I typically tap the A note rather than rolling it. Instead of just hitting G to A, I lift everything but the first finger, slam down the G note and quickly release to the A note. I tried it both ways, but the more complex way seemed just as efficient and made the A note that I tapped much more powerful. The B note that I start with is not actually sounded, so the tap from G is more exaggerated than just a G to A tap. Hope this is useful to some.
Thank you so much for the videos! I wanted videos that didn't teach a tune but talked about the ornaments with examples. This & your other irnament video were exactly what I was looking for! I'm going to start applying this to my version of Kesh Jig. :-)
Heyo all! I am looking for videos that explains the roll and cut and perhaps other ornamentations on the guitar for Celtix Music. Any idea? I cannot find any 🥺 Go raibh maith agaibh! Nice lesson uploader.
Hey man! love your videos. I find A rolls particularly challenging! my G tap either misses or is weak, maybe 1 in 5 of my A rolls sound good :( its my only real weak point I'm consistently finding with my playing. Do you have any advice?
Slow it down and retrain your fingers. Slow it down to the speed hes doing in this video. Your fingers need to be retrained to hit properly. I was the worst culprit. We want to get a lot of tunes under our belt and get our speed up so we can shine at the sessiún. However we need to back up and really work on our technique. I played very fast and had good tunes but when I listened to certain players esp. Órlaith McAuliffe I realized that my rolls were way too soft. The older generation of flute players werent by and large as technical as they are today. We need to slow it down and perfect technique which is not as fun as blasting through tunes.
Fantastic video. You can't imagine how hard it has been for me to find these ornamentation techniques so well explained. Thanks, thanks a lot.

You might check out online academy of Irish music (OAIM) I think they teach on all sorts of instruments

Can I play it on a bamboo flute
Definitely, though the key might be different - if you have a D flute then you should be all set though.
