So sleek!!! The curved profile from tip to bottom looks real sweet man. Congrats for your build and wish you a speedy recovery 😁
Thank you Gader! The ankle is doing way better now.
This is a Nagamaki, a Long handled sword that is a hybrid between a daito and a Naginata. It was a sword that could be used against mounted cavalry or foot soldiers, the extra long handle allowed the user to extend the reach of his sword by changing the position of his hands on the handle. All three of these blades were predecessors of the favored katana, which came later in History, the Daito being a longer version of the Katana, used mainly by Mounted Cavalry, which gave them longer reach so they had a more effective strike against foot soldiers.
Awesome! Thank you for the info!
The work in the video and your explanation are great, but this seems short for a Nagamaki, with the blade and handle not exceeding 40 inches each.
I probably can’t be trusted to make an impartial vote, but you got mine regardless! Great job bro! Love it!
Thanks a ton Jason!
Nice job, Erick! I like that you constantly think outside the box, and do your own version of art work. I do love the classics, but originality is a welcome change of pace, as well! Thanks for sharing my brother! 💯😎👍🏻🔨🔥🔪
Thank you! I love trying to think outside of the box.
Dude that thing looks awesome! That guard is very cool!
Thanks Man! I was worried about it at first but it turned out better than I could have imagined lol.
I really appreciate you taking a totally different direction than everyone else in the challenge that I have seen so far. Plus pushing through your injury. I do love a good or great katana but I also like other Japanese style weapons that don’t get as much love.
I also appreciate you forging ⚒️ completely by hand 🤚 and not doing another Damascus build. I like those too but I’m glad to see something different and even more traditional
Thank you! I'm glad that you like this one for the same reason that I do. I wanted to make something different and give everyone a break from the other builds.
@@theriversexperience9383 you are welcome 🙏 and as someone who doesn’t have much or tons of money it’s nice to see a long piece hammered out vs all of the powered tools
Ohhh my God!.Maan!.that's a challenge very creative 👌 sword nice work
Really bro for my opinion that sword is unique 👌
Thank you man, I really appreciate that!
That full tang handle wraped with ito is brilliant. It's like a shorter version of "nagamaki" or practically a katana version of "parang sword." excellent craftsmanship overall.
Thank you!
I agree that blade is definitely screams The Rivers Experience. It looks like a lot of fun to swing.
It was a blast to swing around and cut stuff lol.
I love it, so unique!! The profile on it is so cool! I wasn't sure what you were doing with the angle iron during the build but the use of it was genius. Well done, my friend! 👏
(I'm totally stealing that angle-iron trick in the future! )
Thanks Denis! You know me lol, I like making stuff that fits'ish the challenge 🤣. I was happy that the Angle-iron thing worked out as well as it did.
Absolutely love the habaki hybrid. It definitely needs a saya next. Great job Erick 👍
Thank you!
That's a beautiful sword. Kudos for doing all of the forging by hand, especially with stitches in your foot! I love the angle iron guard. Way to think outside the box with that, and a perfect fit! I love the overall lines of the build. Great job!
Thank you! I was pumped with how the guard turned out. I second guessed my self with it a couple of times.
i like what some people did with their blades but the Rivers Experience twist you put on this one, the materials, how well everything flows together, and the satisfying sliciness of the blade... you got my vote!
Heck Yeah! Thank you!
Two things I absolutely love are Kwaiken knives and Wakizashi swords. This is an excellent hybrid of the two and a stunning piece of functional art. Fantastic work! Color me impressed!
Thank you! I agree, that was pretty much what I was going for.
I tend not to be complimentary but I have to say you've created a true work of art with that piece... nicely done!
Thank you!
100% agree on most people's handles, way to fat, and not tapered to rear like real katanas. There is a lot of nuance to the Katana that most people overlook or dont understand. Very interesting take on a large Quaken/Katana hybrid 👍
Thank you!
The problem with making katanas is that the Japanese were hell bent on making everything as elaborate and hard for themselves, so no modern hobbyist really wants to spend 250h on a single build, nor do we really have the lifetime skill to do it properly. The wrap is really hard to do properly and it takes a really long time, has to be really tight, waxed, have little pieces of paper supporting the shape, the twists have to intertwine with each other in a certain way and they need to be hammered down into proper fit. Most hobbyists (including myself) just rush the wrap and it ends up fatter and more uneven than it should. Not even someone like Iliya Alexeyev doesn't get every part of the sword right, because back in the day, each part was done by a different guy, specializing only in that thing.
I absolutely love the guard.
Thank you!
I agree on that one and that intention by Erich immediately grabbed my liking to the whole build, a positive contribution to nice clean flowing lines & uncluttered ❗🤔
This is a fantastic sword build, kwaiken-inspired curves notwithstanding, and just looks great. I cannot believe you forged this while healing from a hatchet wound ! The guard turned out perfect. Thanks for the share. We'll see you in your shop livestreams.
Thank you! The ankle injury made the editing of the video fun lol. Watching myself walk around like an extra on The Walking Dead was hilarious.
brother what a creative way to make a guard! thats a beautifull blade you made there!
Thank You!
Really cool and very different to many of the other builds and I really appreciate that. So happy that TH-cam suggestions pointed me to this challenge. So many talented makers out there and these challenges really help to showcase what's really great about YT.
The design and style of this weapon is very eye-catching. I have seen a lot of various blades that have made me say, "I want one of those for myself." The blade you've made in this video has joined that club. Excellent work, good sir.
That's awesome! Thank you!
I think you've knocked it out of the Park..❗🤔
●Beautiful flow of lines.
● Simplicity of lines.
● Excellent Craftsmanship.
●Work well executed.
Full compliments for choice of combination of materials.
A certain lesson in " Less is More..❗
Thank you, love your Sword.

Bernard B.Arch. MPhil. PhD. ( Bld. Sci)
Thank you so much Bernard!
That so cool man,, really cool for me....😁👍
Thank you!
I'm only 5 minutes into the video and you're the clear winner so far from the ones I've seen, simply due to hand-forging instead of pressing and removing stock.
Thank you so much Dave!
The only way i can describe this blade, is that it is "so you". 😂
It came out absolutely beautifully! Amazing job man!
Thank you man! I want to run around swinging your build around poking at stuff lol. I love it.
Not gonna lie, I get a Thai style vibe from that blade. And I absolutely see the kwaiken/kaiken style and I love the little changes you made. Very functional/practical build sir! Best entry I've seen so far!
Heck yeah! Thank you!
thats awesome slicer beautiful sharpness
Thank you!
That is just sweet! I love the blade transition. Good luck in the Challenge Erick!
Thank you Jim!
The angle bar idea for the guard is prety slick
Thank you!
Nice work bro!! When I saw the pipe wrench I thought for sure you gonna start forging with it!😂
🤣 gotta get crafty!
yours is perfect. I always knew the samurai katana was always forward heavy. your concept about the balance is exactly what i imagined. Bravo, that is the definition of a fast blade.
Thank you! Balance is a huge thing to me.
Awesome build! That habaki tsuba piece looks really cool and definitely fits your unique design, great job! 🙌
Thank you Sven!
You're sword is super unique and beautiful. Absolutely love it. This sword and a couple of others are gonna make my vote very difficult to decide, but damn well done my friend!
Thank you! I appreciate that.
I saw what you going for before you explained it. Great job.
Thank you!
its beautifully made and love your design, the blade is very pleasing!
Thank you very much!
That looks amazing! I haven't quite finished watching all the videos yet so i cant say for sure but i think yours is going to be what i vote for! A large part of that is because its pretty similar to what i made and that means it suits my taste pretty well. I really like the ever so slightly curved blade and the long handle. It just feels like you could get so much power out of it and have some brutal swings then choke up and have tons of control. Idk i just like the options lol.
Anyway, i like it and I'll probably vote for it.
Edit: i voted for yours. Do what you will with this information.
That's awesome! Thank you! Everything you said is really how this Sword works. It's so balanced and easy to swing.
I watched you forge this in 2x speed and you straight up looked like a power hammer. Awesome build dude 💪🤙
Thank you David! lol, gotta love that! You made me go watch it like that. I wish I could forge that fast.
Very beautiful and innovative build. Amazing work.
Thank you!
You got my vote, buddy!👍🏻😉👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Hey, I love the shape and length of your 🎉sword and its long handle! BTW, the Allen bolt on top of the arm of your grinding belt towards the front is loose. It’s the one securing the pivot bolt.
Thank you! On my particular grinder that Allen bolt holds my work rest down. It only has one tooling arm slot so the work rest has to attachto the top of the arm.
Nice build!
Thank you!
Rocky Mountain bevel texture edge, nice!
Thank you!
THAT is friggin killer! Nice job as usual, Erick!
Thank you!
What i love about young Erick's approach and thinking on design, is that he has no blocks of conformity tied to his ankles as it where and can remain simplistic and purestic in his approach, nothing runs the risk of being cluttered..⁉️
Keep up the good work Erick, i believe there are many Designers that can take a cue from you, not withstanding the fact that i've seen some mouthwatering stuff come from the Bladeshops of others, there just simply been a hell of an advancement in capabilities and skills over the past decade by comparison to thirty/forty years ago in the craft of Bladesmithing..⁉️🤔
a Certain most skilled
most welcome revival thereof..⁉️
To everyone of one of you " i salute you " for what my opinion is worth..❗
Almost a rebirth of neglected skills..⁉️🤔🙇♂️
@@bernardhill1622 thank you for those amazing words! I try my hardest to stay true to what I think makes a beautiful blade.
Yeah buddy!
ThIs is my main favorite type of sword 🗡💖💜 and you just so happen to make it. Awesome 😊
Thank you so much!
This is very much a modern take on a shinobigatana , much like my shinobigatana. the balance distrubution you used is exactly what i did with mine. interesting to find others using this profile. Cheers
Thank you, I'll check that out.
You made it really beautiful and I liked this video❤
Thank you very much!
It turned out great!
Thank you man!
Looks great man and I love the shape!
Thank you Tony!
very cool man! love the originality. well done!
Thank you!
Nice sword Erick and love that you are still using Willys steel !
Heck yeah, it's my favorite steel!
😎 👍🏼
Very nice. Love it!
Thank you!
certainly in your style and all the better for that, it looks great and well thought out and very useable, going to take some beating, but then we already know who will win lol, and have to ask this, do you know what is going on with Aeron from Alee knives? Has he stopped making or just stopped videos?
Thank you Andy! I think he is spending more time focusing on his business and family.
Looks like a slightly smaller Nagamaki. Really beautiful design and it seems to handle well. Nice job.
Thank you! I agree as well.
That's an amazing sword!!!
Thank you!
Good job, I love how functional your blade is and how well put together it is compared to a few of your competitors. tbh while you would like to have their blades in your collection I think yours is the best edc.
Thank you!
A perfect blade for the apocalypse....
Thank you!
Great, build son! We’re so proud of you.
Thank you Mom!
nice performance 👍
Thank you!
I will hold that some day!
Yup, you will!
The handle and blade of a Japanese sword are not attached with glue.
The blade and handle are fixed with a mekugi.
But the overall look is very cool
Damn that is badass looking. Very nice job.
Thank you!
nice kitchen Knife
This is a great sword and I'd love to own one like it. The balance point being at the choil and the double handle and short blade combination is something I have been thinking about myself for a long time. The short blade and double handle allow for two handed maneuvering inside where I think most people would have to respond in a real attack and so indoor fighting and a tool that fits that is a very important. Maybe mate it with a Chissai made from the biggest file you can find so you can get maybe a 15-18' single hand to partner it (or just the leaf spring again), one to sweep and one to strike a perfect combination. They seem to be a quick manufacture so I think you could put in on the site maybe even with Micarta handles to bring the cost down to minimum and what a perfect real use partnership.
Yeah I really like the idea of the pairing and you can just get that waterjet cut to size to minimise your work but also be enough to hang your hook on. I really like that sweep through the belly and the back of the blade too and the only Chissai I have seen made had the similar sweep. Im a big fan of the hammer tone you have done and the two tone color as well. Mint!
Good job and nice style. Next job: Get that anvil to stand still when you're beating on it!
One of these days I'll be making on of this tripod anvil stands like Jason Knight uses. They seem to stand still a little better.
Very cool style. Looks very handy too.
Thank you!
Big points for toughing it out there
Thanks Kris!
Absolutely beautiful love it. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Technically, that's a kind of knife. It gets my vote though.
Thank you!
Beautiful
Innovative steelwork. You are an artist, sir. Love and respect from Egypt
Thank you!
@@theriversexperience9383 No, Thank YOU
Nice short sword. Looks like it went through those pumpkins without any resistance at all. You're pretty brave to be swinging around a sword after messing up your ankle with an axe haha. Hope you heal up quickly. How thick was the blade stock once completed? Great work on the build!
Outstanding hammer work…
Thanks 👍
beau travail ;)
Beautiful blade. Phenomenal.
Thank you David!
Such a tank of propane, how long does it last for, burning continously with one borner in a "knife-size" forge?
It last for a while. I haven't measured the exact time though.
Amazing job 👏
Thank you!
That looks really nice.
Thank you!
Красивый клинок получился.
That blade is so bad ass!❤
Thank you Neil!
Beautiful work sir!
Thank you!
Wow awesome weapon! im not a “katana guy”, i do mostly HEMA, but i have fought some ppl who did kenjuitsu (I probably spelled the wrong). N what found is the weapon were designed around what was available and personal preference n from the preference spawned the creation of the martial arts. In both medieval Europe and Medieval Japan the weapons were all unique. The blacksmith would measure, and ask question to the user b4 he began crafting the weapon. So that being said this weapon would 100% be found in medieval Japan. Well done, i really want to swing it.
Thank you! I wish you could swing it around. It was an absolute blast swinging it around.
I'm just trying to figure out why he was hitting the metal with the ballpein side, if it was just for looks or if it does something to composition of the metal
That hammer had a carbide ball bearing added into the tip of it. You use it to straighten the blade. You can look up straightening hammer on TH-cam to see a few videos about it. It's a pretty useful tool.
This blade is very similar to the Naginata
That is an actual awesome sword and quite an accomplishment cause of the ankle injury.
Thank you! It was funny watching myself move around like the walking dead while I was editing the video lol.
That’s an epic build!
" I'm not a professional welder".... it's ok bro we all go through our *first time*
Naginata....🎉
I love it look like thai style but batter
Thank you!
It looks like a traditional dha. But you can't exactly categorize every style of sword as being either this or that.
that would be nice af if it was damuscus...its already nice like that
Hell yeah . How long did it take you to forge just the blade.
It took about 6 hours to forge.
@@theriversexperience9383 if you get this I would like to know who taught you how to make knives I’m trying to teach my self to forge but I could use a little guidance i watch your videos but I have some questions but I don’t know who to ask.thank you for your reply to my question on how long it took you to forge the sword witch was awesome.
@@jeffbeck2335 I spend a lot of time forging and making them. I'm self taught for almost everything that I do in the knife making world.
