Dammit, I bought the Air 2+ this year. I could have waited although colour is just a small bonus. I can't fault the design or software, and it looks like they've moved the power button to a much more sensible position.

    • @bellissimo4520

Also the color always has one downside - a darker screen. So as long as you don't need the color, I'd say the Air 2+ is just fine.

I like the look of it but man, that's a pretty pricey slate.
At the moment I have Amazon's standard Kindle but I want to be able to use apps like Libby with it and see full colour illustrations when I'm reading comics.
I know a lot of people might just say "why not just get a standard tablet?" and quite simply standard tablet displays are absolute cack in direct sunlight compared to e-ink displays.
This tablet covers my needs but assuming the colour e-ink display doesn't have a huge impact on the price I'd rather wait until someone finds a way to cut a few of the more unnecessary corners to get the price a bit lower.

I ve used onyx air 2 plus ( I think previous one) little bit. I don't like it because it is quite sluggish., much slower than kindle Scribe..yes it looks premium but not software. I do not know if there is any improvement on this new model. But based on my previous experiences, if you need just notetaking device, you should go for remarkable 2; if you need notetaking and ebook reading, you should go for kindle Scribe; if you need just ebook reader, kindle paperwhite or something similar should be enough. Onyx has more advanced features but I can't bear a slow device. If they sort software issues, I directly go them..
By the way Samsung galaxy S9 etc are not good for notetaking..they are multimedia tablets.

BSR technology is a special chipset designed by boox to accelerate the refresh speed while managing ghosting. It is known to drain the battery pretty quickly. The Air 3 (non c) doesn’t have BSR, which made the battery life last a lot longer. It’s baffling that there’s no bypass option. BSR is always on.

I've tried this one and the Kindle Scribe and for handwriting the Scribe is so much more natural plus it has an eraser on the pen. Android apps on the Note Air are not really worth having cause they're so sluggish. The Kindle app is the only usable one. I also found the Note Air to be way too buggy. I wanted to like it though cause there are many more options than on the Scribe.

Yep, in terms of responsiveness it’s close to writing on the native writing app. Boox specifically made their OS to detect and accommodate OneNote. On the native app, the Wacom writing is sent to the e-ink screen and app simultaneously. The tablet pre-renders the direct e-ink screen writing first, then the app lines when the page refreshes or when you scroll. They look the same. That makes the latency lower than the pencil 1 at under 20ms (nowhere near pencil 2 at 8ms). Amazing for e-ink.
Now, OneNote doesn’t coordinate like the native app but the OS detects Onenote and does it anyway. The issue is that the OS doesn’t know what pen color is being used, so it’s going to use the last pen settings used on the native app. When the screen updates, it will show the real writing. I write in black most of the time with it pre-rendering black. Pre-rendering in black while I’m writing in red doesn’t bother me that much, I just scroll a cm to see the real lines when I want to.

Great video, but what I'd like to know is the _'battery cycle count',_ meaning... at what count does the battery's ability to hold a full charge nose dive? I think that's a valid question for those considering to use this in a busy office environment. The big boast of e-ink has been that there's no _'battery anxiety",_ which simply isn't the case with this devices that comes *out-of-the-box* for the heavy user, with around seven hours use before it requires recharging. And if you charge it most days, its battery's ability to hold a full charge is going to cut in at around 2-3 years of use.... if as most computers, the battery needs replacing near and around a thousand cycles.
Personally, I think the device is fantastic, it's just with their desire to make it _'easy on the eye'_ they have strangled its ability to hold a larger battery, which is a shame and is becoming a regular feature with Boox' colour range.

LCD refresh rates are thousands of times faster than e-ink refresh rates. This means your eyes and brain are subject to constant flickering (though you're not aware of it). For browsing or gaming or videos not so much of a problem as the content changes constantly anyway but for reading , creating or marking up documents your eyes will noticeably take more abuse over a long workday.

Great review. A question - Does this tablet allow writing using stylus over screen protector? Thanks.

"Just 430 grams". That's about a pound. Too heavy to read for any length of time when holding it in your hands. They need to get the weight down by half before I consider buying.

The Kindle Scribe is about 430g and I find it quite comfortable to hold. When you say that it is about a pound, I agree that sounds heavy, but somehow it is still comfortable, I think. It could be because they are so thin. It's also good to be able to read in landscape mode with two columns--you're able to read faster because your eyes don't have to move as far left to right.

I know you have to say nice things in reviews. But I honestly don't know who this product is for. If someone wants the retro feel of paper, then they should buy an actual book.

It's meant to be a productivity and ease of access device. It serves to purpose of having a few thousand notebooks and books without needing to carry or organize them. And also let's you have the functionality of electronic devices for sharing files or accessing resources like Dropbox or the kindle store. And the type of screen is designed to stop 90% of eye strain caused by tradition phone or tablet screens. It also has other functionality too for things like writing essays, annotating, or accessibility features for someone who might have certain disabilities.
It's not really an entertainment device unless you use it for fun reading or art. It's best use is primarily for someone like a college student, writers, or people who have to manage a lot of notepads, books, or writing needs. I can say from experience in university right now that having the ability to store 4 different textbooks, my notes, annotations, and other files in one device while still being able to access things like canvas and Google docs makes college life so much easier for me. And it makes it easier too because I can take it to places it would be difficult to bring my laptop to, and I don't have the eye strain from the screen. Plus having it be so dedicated to productivity with limited distractions and pop ups makes staying focused much easier. It's easy for me to be working on my laptop and out of habit open a TH-cam video in the background or check discord or something and lose my momentum for work. With something like this I'm able to limit those outside distractions and have all my tools for school/work in one convenient place.
      I hope that helps :)

I use it as a notebook for engineering and read manga and pdf's on it. I have a separate, smaller e-ink device for reading. I have all my textbooks and notes with me at all times. Completely worth it.
