The Lighthouse is a beautifully made, wonderfully acted film. It’s dripping with atmosphere and can be interpreted in so many different ways, studied and talked about for years, and I hated every minute of it.
Did not see lighthouse yet, but i absolutely respect this approach. A lot of people shits on Iron Man 3, and while i understand a lot of their points, this movie tickles some boxes that makes me like it with all its flaws.
This is how I feel about The Fountain. It's one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, but I was angry the whole time watching it. It was "Art" but not "entertainment".
Your version of a white guy nervous about being branded racist when reviewing Black Panther was the funniest shit I've heard in months. This whole video was a joy to watch.
It's exactly what I thought as well!! White guys being afraid of being racist!! I fell asleep the first half hour of Black Panther... twice!! Still haven't seen it to this day!!
@@evandercaldwell9993 But this entire video is just Marcus making excuses as to why people liked a film maybe he didn’t. To this guy, there has to be some darker reason as to why critics love Black Panther rather than just accepting that maybe they just liked the film. This should be so easy to understand.
The thing about Cosmonaut being a “contrarian” is that, if I remember right, the way the numbering scores are set up is that a 5 is an actually average, just okay movie, whereas most people consider anything less than a 7 to mean it’s dogshit
He said in his stream 1 - 4/10 are bad movies (Which is what people should REALLY get mad about) 5/10 are okay movies (Average or movies you won’t remember) & 6 -10/10 are good movies (I think this explains itself). And he also talked about how everyone looks at number scales differently since some think giving something a 5/10 is being to mean.
Things we learned today: 1. Audience scores should be hidden on artsy films 2. Critic scores should be hidden on goofy films 3. Redditors should not be allowed to call anyone else contrarian 4. Alba stumbled
I fucking loved this video. PLEASE do more highlights from your streams. Shit was hilarious! And appreciate the additional editing you did for it instead of just only clipping it out
In a stream about contrarianism, I'm glad Marcus and his chat found common ground in the fact that "user reviews" is a unanimously trash category that you should never trust.
I feel like people are forgetting that being "A Contrarian" also mean doing it *because* they want to oppose the common opinion. But in watching the videos, it seems much more based in personal feelings rather than "being a contrarian". Sometimes common opinion is considered but there are times where he agrees and others where he doesn't.
Yup! People just tell him that he's a "Contrarian" just because his personal opinions is against the norm. Just because he has so many opinions that is against or opposite of the majority that people think that it isn't a coincidence and that he is being a "Contrarian".
This is exactly it. My grandfather was a true contrarian. He supported losing politicians and sports teams every day of his life. If a candidate or position was unpopular, he was for it, even if it made no sense. He was for weed legalization for years before it happened here in Canada, and thought the 2020 democratic nominee would be Michael Bloomberg. Marcus has nothing on him.
Marcus is the only person I watch that I disagree with the majority of the time. I just think his videos are entertaining and well made, regardless of whether or not I disagree with him.
Marcus tends to lay all his biases on the table, like when he says he likes "miserable shit" aka dark and sobering flicks. When someone's upfront about their biases, they come off as less of a "my opinion is law" guy, and you get to enjoy their content unless their opinions are completely headass.
@@earlsaverson5387 Agreed. I love BvS, but I don't get annoyed when Marcus makes fun of it, because he doesn't seem like he's trying to come off as unbiased.
You almost have to split the difference between Critics and Users to get a comparable score. Users are highly emotional and that can quickly spoil any meaning to their average score. (either hating, meme'ing or fanboying) Critics are more interested in qualities of filmcraft or innovation while occasionally missing the fun... So I think if your score fits somewhere between critics and users, you're clearly on the right track and NOT a contrarian. You good boy:-)
I disagree. Critics see multiple movies for their job. They have to be there so it's usually an honest opinion. The audience will mostly only review extremes things they love like that they want to gush about and rate super high Or things that they dislike and post like 1 star Tge average person that just thinks something is good or just ok never really post
@@Triforcefilms you're saying the score should be split between the audience and critics scores. I'm saying keep the critics score but the audience score needs to be reevaluated
I once read a user review for moonlight where a person said everything about the movie was great, but they gave it a 1 star because it "encouraged sin against god".
That’s the equivalent of “You made excellent and well thought out points in this video and your editing was phenomenal. Unsubscribed, blocked and reported.”
reminds me of a... I think it was a review for a restaurant? that said something like "service was excellent but only god gets five stars." at least it was four stars and not one star
People misunderstand two things. 1, that actual contrarians constantly make a point of being DIFFERENT than the majority, so much so that even if the consensus changes, they will contradict their first statement just to be DIFFERENT. 2, people conflate their own feelings for the case Markus makes for what he likes and doesnt like. In other words, the harshness or level of praising he gives can just as subjectively be recieved. Plus what do yall want? For everyone to like the same stuff? To be able to substantiate ones opinions? I actually like the idea of not having a need to substantiate every single opinion about trivial things such as this.
I think the silent minority doesn’t give a fuck and it’s a very loud and small contingent that needs to tell Marcus every single time they disagree with his opinion, even if they have no specific criticisms with his arguments. I think he’s so wrong about the Batman movie I hated it so much but it doesn’t affect my opinion of Marcus as a person or TH-camr maybe just a little Batman biased? I can appreciate his reviews even if I disagree.
@@talex3844 I also would like to know why you don't like The Batman. I feel like there's a line to be drawn between being a contrarian and just having a different opinion than what's popular. In my mind, contrarians are people who disagree with popular opinion just for the sake of disagreeing or because they think it makes themselves more interesting or look more intelligent. They disagree with popular opinion just because it's the popular opinion. You have your own reasons for your own opinions, and therefore regardless of what those opinions are you are not a contrarian. Maybe my personal definition is just wrong but that's how I see it.
I would say the criteria for being a Contrarian is PURPOSELY disliking/liking something just because everyone else likes/hates it like not liking Stranger Things just because everyone else likes it or liking Batman V Superman when most hate it. I have had some opinions in the past where its against popular opinion but I don't think it makes me a contrarian because I usually agree with the popular opinion.
@@idkwhattotype4704 OK I'll give you that it was funny but I'm still confused on which of the like 5 ideas you were trying to convey with the word "Pedophilia".
one of the defining traits for his reviews is not talking down to his audience, i feel like. even when i disagree with his opinions, his videos are enjoyable to watch because he explains his thoughts like a regular person, and doesn’t talk down to the viewer
He never tells you what to think, either, his tone makes me feel like if I don't agree, it's fine by him. Which a lot of professional reviewers haven't got the hang of.
Gotta say, this stream was one of the most enjoyable Twitch experiences I’ve had in forever. You’re a great content creator Marcus, keep up the amazing work.
As someone who generally ignores ratings, *especially* from audiences, at this point I take most instances of the usage the label "contrarian" to be shorthand for "I'm discounting your opinion since you don't agree with me". Outside of arguably Mike from RLM, I honestly can't really think of anyone who is legitimately contrarian for contrariness's sake the majority of the time.
@@Helpfulhelp I agree somewhat but not entirely. Some of the time (Fallout 4, NMS) he takes the popular opinion because doing the opposite would be damaging to his reputation as a serious critic, but a lot of the time he seems to be making points explicitly for contrarianism sake. His subnautica review comes to mind in regards to this. Overall I wouldn't call him explicitly a contrarian, but just that his content leans on making some kind of criticism even when sometimes it's not generally true.
@@koberyan2880 What? Mike has changed his opinion to oppose the overall discussion just to fuck with Jay or Rich (or Jack) pretty often. I'm not even saying he *is* contrarian overall since I put "arguably" there for a reason, but pretending Mike doesn't act contrarian sometimes for his own amusement is just straight up a lie. I wouldn't call him contrarian for any other reason since I'm not some inssne person like too many people are who delude themselves into thinking that people they like *have* to agree with their outlook on everything 100% of the time or else they're a fraud | hack. enemy | contrarian | [insert buzz word here]. There's definitely things either he or Jay or even Rich have said that I have disagreed with, but that's fine since it's their opinion and they at least tend to explain why it's their opinion. Expecting *anyone* to share the same opinion with you 100% of the time is completely deluded, especially when it comes to parasocial (TH-cam) relationships.
DING DING DING we have a winner. literally 99.9% of the time I've been labeled as a "Hipster" or "Contrarian" its because I disagreed on how good a movie is and they can't seem to refute the issues I had with the movie so it must be me that's the issue...
Audience scores are always going to lean to an extreme. Critics are literally payed to give their opinions on things. Non-critics are only going to be tempted to score things unprompted when they feel very strongly about something. Movie critics also tend to be people more well-versed in how movies are made, and are able to judge more objectively as opposed to just "they killed off x character that I liked and now I'm angry" or "this sad movie made me sad and therefore it's garbage".
the reason there is always this discrepancy between audience and reviewer score is because the only people who care enough to go out of their way to write a review either really loved or really hated something.
I stopped caring about the general audience score on sites 100% because of this. It's for a specific part of people who are fans too. I consider myself a pretty big fan and I've never wanted to go out of my way to post a review on RT or Metacritic
Honestly, most star-review sites where anyone can vote are absolutely broken, because you're right, it quickly devolves into unhelpful, extreme opinionated statements that really just take up space. And many people go ahead and give 5 stars simply because nothing was _offensively_ bad, and then people will give 1 star because of _one_ thing they didn't like.
@@dthbdbsfgh that's far better than me, where I'm overly critical and have a hard time enjoying things for what they are. I at least do have a decent amount of things that I genuinely love, but I probably have more things that I dislike or hate

He’s not lying everybody Paddington 2 is a life changing experience. I was struggling with high school insecurities and was going through a rough transition into adult. Voillllla a magical experience unlike anything I ever seen brought me to a place I thought I lost.
I genuinely would be a different person without paddington 2. people always are like "oh what movie made you into a ✨cinephile✨" and I've always been a movie person but paddington in that cute lil pink prison uniform is what made me go full on letterboxd user
I thought you were the typical hipster contrarian at first. Then I watched more and more videos and you’re pretty dang fair and spot-on. You also are pretty clear that what you’re sharing is an opinion. Folks do tend to overreact to things. What I like about you is that if a movie makes you feel something you take this introspective look at why you felt that way. So if you hate a movie, you have a very good, valid reason.
To be a true contrarian, you have to set out purposefully to say something opposite of the consensus for the sake of being opposite. You can have contrary opinions and still not be contrarian cause it's just how you feel about it. It's when you do it expressly and solely just to be different that it's contrarian. Or at least, that's how I've always seen it.
That's it. Or, alternatively, a contrarian is somebody who seeks out a popular opinion and its holders, specifically to tell them they're wrong. This is not without its virtues: Christopher Hitchens, self-identified contrarian, spent his life doing exactly that, to generally good effect. But Cosmonaut posting balanced critique to his channel is the opposite of that, he's not even making anyone watch his reviews.
The thing is that a contrarian won't outright say that they don't like something just because other people do, they typically have other reasons that they give even if that isnt their true motivation
@@jacobcardinal8041 A contrarian isn't just somebody who dislikes something *because* other people like it. It's someone who holds an opinion contrary to the prevailing view and goes out of their way to express it to people they know will disagree. The reasons they hold the opinion may be valid, and the motive for expressing it may be valid (e.g. ethical).
Thank you for this. The internet sure does love to give their own meaning to or conflate the meaning with others in regards to words these days. It's like how everything is "underrated." :P
exactly, we all have been around people who just disagree for the sake of it, Discord groups or irl friends, we all know someone who likes to """""""""troll"""""""""" like that. Example: "X game is coming out, looks good" Contrarian; "It seems like shit!" People: Why? Contrarian: "it seems bad" (games comes out in 2 years)
love how this video devolved into scrolling through a website and complaining about other's opinions. I do that with my friends every now and then, and I need more of this on yt
I always find it hilarious whenever people get this uptight because... honestly most contrarians I know or have seen haven't been the kind of people to provide killer analysis and points like you do nor do they seem to get that just because something is popular doesn't mean that there is no possibility that at least one person is gonna say it sucked or vice versa. I think the difference is you can usually tell who's taking the opposite opinion just to be that guy and who's doing it because they genuinely feel that way. Like your reviews I've always been fascinated by because I could completely disagree on a point but the way you articulate it and explain yourself makes me perk up and gets me thinking. Meanwhile a contrarian will make me roll my eyes because there is nothing to their thought process that's interesting. One moment they will have their own opinion and the moment it gets too popular or you try to speak to them about it they change their viewpoint just to seem special, sometimes they'll even rehash what they read in an article just for the sake of seeming more educated than they actually are.
Okay- but I need to say- The Batman deserves the 9.5 you gave it. I loved that film from beginning to end and it had a great sense of identity and theme and stuck to both of those throughout the film.
@@NotCharAznableScores represent how people feel about things. Instead of giving a detailed analysis on something you like, saying it’s a 10 or 9 can automatically tell people how you feel about it
I feel like people definitely misuse the term "contrarian." It's not like he disagrees with people on movies just to disagree, he just genuinely thinks they're wrong. 99% of people who are "contrarians" either are have understandably different tastes, are ill-informed or biased, or just have bad opinions. I too scour the depths of Rotten Tomatoes on movies/shows that I found absolutely horrid or amazing and gawk at the trash opinions, some people are just weird. Some people liked the live action Cowboy Beebop, those people are very strange indeed, but only some are "contrarians" in my book.
Dude, for what its worth, you are my favorite TH-camr. As someone who loves both the Raimi Movies and the Star Wars prequels endlessly, your video of shitting on both of them are some of my favortie videos on the internet. I think you're insanely funny, I love your editing, your opinions and how you approach each topic. I love that you cut straight to the chase, and you have way too unique of a perspective that was way too hard to come across on TH-cam. Keep being yourself, you are appreciated more than you know! Keep up the great work
The only reason I'm watching Marcus is that I disagree with him in almost every video he makes. Sometimes he's funny, sometimes he makes actual valid criticism, but most of the time he really does act like a contrarian. His Jojo and Shrek the 3rd videos for example, it's like he barely paid attention to the source material and made those videos solely to shit on them.
Tbf, he never really hated the Raimi Spider-Man films, he has issues with them yes, but he clarified he never outright hated them. The Star Wars prequels on the other hand, yeah no, he hates them with a passion.
I think movie critiques are similar to food critiques. You’ve got your professional chefs, your foodies, and you average person. Your average person might rate a food poorly on the basis of not liking broccoli, but that doesn’t mean the dish is bad necessarily. At the same time, a chef or foodie might be tempted to discount that “I don’t like broccoli” is a perfectly valid reason to not like the dish. Same for movies. There will be those who can articulate a film’s merits and flaws and from there can separate the movie’s “quality” from their personal enjoyment of it. “This is not the best film but I love it, here is why.” Then there will be those who won’t go much further than “I did not like this movie, therefore it is bad.”
Dude I must be going nuts. Didn't VideogameDunkey make a perfect video addressing the essential role of a critic ? To be consistent and concise. So readers/subscribers of said critics can formulate their interpretation of interests they may have with a film ?
People on the internet have such a hard time accepting someone else has different opinions. There always needs to be some big reason, it can’t just be that you disagree. You think that way because you’re stupid, or your opinion is based on politics, or you’re a contrarian, or you’re too nit picky, or you’re a consoomer, or you’re nostalgia blind, or whatever.
Here’s the thing on Rotten Tomatoes; it rewards movies that are like 7/10, solid stuff that’s inoffensive and technically sound, and often makes them look as good as truly great movies
I think it's just that a lot of people have very unique and different tastes from each other, that we forget that opinions can be different or change overtime. I don't think Terminator 3 was that bad. I also don't think it was better than Terminator 2. Sharing opinions is just a bizarre experience. And funny. And sometimes hostile.
He wasn’t the voice the people wanted, but he was the voice they needed... *because as we can clearly see from some of these reviews the people don’t know what the fuck they’re saying my brother in Christ those ratings*
The thing I love about Marcus and his videos is that he's willing to state his case along with reasoning without passively talking down to his audience. I've seen so many videos from other true contrarian TH-camrs that devolve into petty personal rants about why they're right and why we should feel bad for not thinking the same way they do. There's no harm and no foul for staying your opinion against the grain just so long as you're not patronizing, or straight up insulting in some cases, the opposition. I may disagree with some of Marcus's stuff (like the star wars rebels vids for example). But I have never felt that he's talked down to me or disrespected me when watching his videos. You keep doing you Marcus. By the way, the cosmonaut picture shows are some of my favorites from your channel.
I agree. See MasterTainment and going off on his audience for his audience saying he had a horrible moon knight theory which involved time travel lmao.
He has the most reasonable, non-polarizing opinions on the Star Wars sequels. He was completely mixed on Last Jedi and somehow people still got furious with him.
@19:44 This is a known phenomenon in the world of online reviews. You encounter a huge sampling bias among general users. Most people will only review a thing if they feel strongly about it. A completely adequate experience doesn't fill them with the emotional fervor needed to power them through the process of opening a review site, thinking about their feelings, and articulating them coherently, and submitting those thoughts in an informative way.
It’s also that they want to affect the overall score so if they see that a movie got a higher ranking than what it deserves (in their opinion), they’ll give it 1 star to try and lower the overall score as much as they can. Same when a movie gets a lower ranking.
Honestly, people who call someone out for being "contrarian" arguably miss the point of a critic - especially a youtube critic. The vast majority of people who watch your videos will be people who've followed the channel for a while. They know what you like and dislike and also know how those likes and dislikes align with their own. If they, in the past, utterly hated movies or games that you liked a lot, then that's still valuable knowledge - they'll know that if you like a game or a movie similar to those games, it'll probably mean that they *won't* like it, based on their past experiences. Same the other way around, if you hated things they liked they know that if you hate something in the same genre there's a good chance that they migth like it. It's the job of a critic to give a *biased* Opinion. Not an unbiased or neutral one, because that's not really helpful to consumers. The bias, in combination with the consumers knowledge about said bias, helps with deciding what products to consume.
@@NoiseDay I guess art is meant to be looked at subjectively not objectively (most of the time) like there are objective things about art, but majority of the time, you as a person are meant to insert yourself and derive your own enjoyment/understanding of the art, whatever conclusion that may be e.g. tall girl is a psychopath
The point of a critique is supposed to be what you felt after consuming the art, how did the painting make you feel? How did the food taste? Did the movie’s emotional beats land for you or did they not? After that you must explain your reaction and why it hit or miss, I know you probably know this but I thought I’d just explain
@@NoiseDay Entirely neutral criticism simply ain't possible, your experience of any media will always be coloured by our own likes and dislikes. A neutral critique of a video game, for example, would boil down to the technical level. Does the game work, do the graphics meet current standards (although that already dips into subjective criticism, what looks good to one person might not look good to another), etc. The moment you start talking about if the game is *fun* you start getting into biased territory, because what we find fun heavily depends on our personality and our own individual likes and dislikes. One should, of course, still strive to be neutral in their criticism, but in my opinion you can't fully remove that bias from the equation. Even if you are aware of it you might overcompensate and rate things too highly as a result. It's therefore better for consumers to know what the critics they watch like and dislike than to expect complete neutrality.
There is a reason Siskel and Ebert worked so well. They had opposed subjective opinions, you usually agreed with one and disagreed with the other. Movies with two thumbs up generally had something to like for everyone. If two thumbs up was all the time it would be meaningless as a score.
For the record, having a thoughtful opinion that diverges from the mainstream or having your own preferences an interests doesn't make you a contrarian. A contrarian allows popular opinion to dictate theit own preferences as much as someone who bandwagons.
I love how being a contrarian has just become "youre popular and have a different opinion than me" on the internet haha Our boi's hardly a contrarian, he just rates shit the way he does
I honestly can't trust the user score because, unless it's the most harmless thing in existence, there will always be someone that goes on a crusade for or against a movie\game. I still remember when TLOU2 and GOT fans went at war with each other because they both wanted their game to be "game of the year".
Last of Us 2 is definitely not game of the year sure it had amazing graphics, gameplay, and voice acting but the plot and character development were not good compared to the 1st one but if people enjoy it I understand why they may like it more than me
Love how he's accidentally exposing rotten tomatoes algorithm for movies they decide are good or not good. Also Eddie's review is exactly how baseball HOF voting works.
This was a fun video! Statements like, “Your just contrarian!” May hold water at times, but for you, I would say it’s just people disagreeing with you. There is a lot of immature people out there that don’t quite know how to disagree with people. You’re a great reviewer. And that’s from a guy who has disagreed with you in the past.
one of the reasons i like you is specifically BECAUSE you often, but not always, seem to go against the grain with many movies. i'll watch something and think "hey that was really good" and then i'll watch your review and i'll realize "oh there was actually a lot of flaws and/or dumb shit in this movie that i didn't notice." or the opposite, i'll watch a movie that i think "meh" about and then watch your review and you really liked it and suddenly i'm seeing all these things you pointed out that are worth appreciating about it. it feels like you help temper my extremes/initial thoughtless reactions into something more balanced. but my favorite reason for watching you is that you do all that while reliably making me laugh my ass off. you deliver your opinions with super solid humor and you never feel like you're genuinely (although sometimes sarcastically lol) berating anyone for liking or disliking a movie.
I’ve never seen you as a contrarian. You’ve always provided pretty good reasons for your opinions so it never seemed like you were just having them to be different or whatever. Also you should release more stream highlight videos they’re great !!
As a person who always can't catch a livestream all the time due to work, I'm a fan of highlight videos and more on your channel would be awesome imo. Would love to see more of these from your streams. Keep up the great work!
I feel like usually audiences give out a higher score because they went into the movie knowing they would like it. Let me explain. If you're a critic and have to watch every movie, you might not particularly like HP and might have hated the two previous Fantastic Beasts movies, but you are still going and writting a review. As an audience member, if you don't like HP you don't go watch the movie. If you saw the first two and didn't like them, you just don't go to the third one. This means that most people that bought the ticket for it already knew they were going in for a good time. It's only fans. HP is an extreme example, but I feel like its applicable to a lot of movies thanks to trailers.
Armand White is the perfect contrarian reviewer. Even though he is always rating shit with anti-popular takes, he still manages to give actual, readable points (no matter how shitty they are) while also knowing when a movie is so good it deserves a good score and when a movie is so bad it deserves a bad score
What's so funny about this to me is that I've NEVER watched a reviewer I agree with so often. I think my friends would say I'm a contrarian too though, but I feel like I just expect/like different shit in the movies I watch than they do. Keep up the good work!

TLJ is so hard because when it’s good, it’s very good (Praetorian fight, Rey and Kylo moments). But when it’s bad, it’s fucking awful (Canto Bight, literally anything to do with the Resistance side of the story). Honestly it’s not great, but not awful imo
I just had the worst "what was the point of that anyway" with my family after everything everywhere all at once. I really liked it but they just went on and on about how long it was for a "basic" plot. So I can definitely sympathize with hating being around people like that.
In my experience "Contrarian" is the word that gets thrown at me by family members who come out of theater after every movie saying its incredible and when I don't think its perfect and give valid criticisms rather than think about the criticisms and reflect on the movie I'm a "contrarian" just because i thought the new star wars trilogy wasn't the greatest creation on earth. Contrarian is honestly used by a lot of people to try and invalidate your opinion since your criticisms are making them question their own so rather than think about harder the call you a contrarian or hipster to write you and your problems with the creation off, without a second guess. 🤷

One of my favourite things at the minute is checking the reviews for the batman and reading the 1 star reviews. All of them say the same thing and it's really funny for me because of how good everyone else thinks the film is! However, on another note, Suicide squad 1 has literally almost 60% audience score
The thing is that after watching a TH-camr's reviews the audience gets a sense of what kind of content that particular reviewer responds to and generally the audience knows what to expect from that person in a future review, this is not the case with your videos though, it is hard to predict your reaction towards something, I've seen you like content I like and vice versa. I may not agree with all your reviews but that makes you unique as a reviewer.
This was a great video. Extremely entertaining and made me think about the concept of being contrarian a little more critically. Keep up the great work!
FWIW I never once thought you were just being contrarian. I wouldn’t subscribe to your channel if the content did not have value and I think your content is worth my time.

Stepping outside the cycle of "this new thing is excellent and beyond critique" turning to "the thing is a couple months old now and overrated and people who really like it are worthy of scorn" is probably more than enough for people on the internet to start calling you a contrarian. Should people on the internet calling you a contrarian affect your self-image enough to annoy you into making whole half-hour video breakdowns on the subject? That's a different story, but I am always glad for more variety from the Variety Hour.
I think audience scores are so different because people are only likely to review a movie if they thought it was terrible or amazing. Usually if you see a fine movie you won’t leave a review.
A contrarian is something I call someone when I've been having a debate with them or I'm in a community with them and they literally never agree on anything you say, ever, never have. That to me is a contrarian, they are taking an unusual splendor in arbitrarily disagreeing with you. Reviewing movies that don't do anything new, but everyone liked them anyway, therefore you're being a contrarian, doesn't actually make you a contrarian. That's like calling someone a contrarian because they think everything in the dollar store is cheap crap. It is cheap crap, but people still love the dollar store. It's people being biased and then mislabeling you because you aren't biased like them, it's a projection basically.
I wish I had stayed for the rest of the stream because I was losing my mind during this whole video, love seeing the stream highlights made into full videos. I also 100% agree, tastes vary wildly for anyone to be a true contrarian unless they’re actively trying to piss people off
TBH, I feel like the idea of Marcus being a contrarian has more to do with the fact that he probably understands the movie making process better than most others which leads him to have a more solid reason as to why he gave the score that he does for whatever movie/game. The average movie goer more than likely doesn't take into consideration the shot composition, the score, the camera movements or lack thereof, etc. It isn't a bad thing, but I think the less you understand about the movie process, the less you'd agree with movie critics. Basically, the professional movie critics have a better idea of what they're talking about while the average movie goer, I get from the Rotten Tomatoes reviews at least, don't.
To be a contrarian is pretty difficult, as you have to be extremely consistent in being contrary to everything. Being contrarian and only half the time just makes you normal, because not everyone can agree on everything.

The thing about Cosmonaut being a “contrarian” is that, if I remember right, the way the numbering scores are set up is that a 5 is an actually average, just okay movie, whereas most people consider anything less than a 7 to mean it’s dogshit
Now, most people base it off of rotten tomatoes’ grading system, where anything less than a 65% “fails”
He said in his stream 1 - 4/10 are bad movies (Which is what people should REALLY get mad about) 5/10 are okay movies (Average or movies you won’t remember) & 6 -10/10 are good movies (I think this explains itself). You almost have to split the difference between Critics and Users to get a comparable score. Users are highly emotional and that can quickly spoil any meaning to their average score. So I think if your score fits somewhere between critics and users, you're clearly on the right track and NOT a contrarian. You good boy:-)
I disagree. Critics see multiple movies for their job. They have to be there so it's usually an honest opinion.

@@stormtraitor6545 that’s true but I find review bombs are kinda rare and very easy to spot.
I would never say CVH is a contrarian, he just has a SHIT TON of hot takes, and honestly, I respect that.
the reason there is always this discrepancy between audience and reviewer score is because the only people who care enough to go out of their way to write a review either really loved or really hated something.

By the way, the cosmonaut picture shows are some of my favorites from your channel.
dont be shy.. say shafrillas name
I agree. See MasterTainment and going off on his audience for his audience saying he had a horrible moon knight theory which involved time travel lmao.
I could watch videos like this for HOURS
Nah, you’re not a contrarian, that’s just the internet being the internet
You can easily make the most basic ass opinion on the internet and I guarantee you that someone out there will hate you for it
He has the most reasonable, non-polarizing opinions on the Star Wars sequels. He was completely mixed on Last Jedi and somehow people still got furious with him.
@@mr.cranker8086 exactly
Defenitly make more these are fun to watch and if it's fun for you to make them then it really is an absolute win
Wow, I've never heard someone say that critics are meant to be biased. Where did I get this expectation that critics should be neutral?
If two thumbs up was all the time it would be meaningless as a score.
marcus’ character arc since he admitted to liking aquaman has been very interesting to watch unfold
The lesson we learned here today is that Marcus is a contrarian, but that’s ok because everyone’s a contrarian.
Maybe the real contrarian was the friends we made along the way
And if everyone’s a contrarian, no one is
@@lieutenantwumbo5845 nice reference to incredibles

the stream was fantastic, and i loved watching this. will def rewatch hundreds of times
was so jokes with reading the ironic morbius reviews lmao
Well there's 30 minutes of my life i can't get back
For the record, having a thoughtful opinion that diverges from the mainstream or having your own preferences an interests doesn't make you a contrarian. A contrarian allows popular opinion to dictate theit own preferences as much as someone who bandwagons.
I love how being a contrarian has just become "youre popular and have a different opinion than me" on the internet haha
Our boi's hardly a contrarian, he just rates shit the way he does
Well unless the definition's changed, it does literally mean to go against popular opinion
Please make more of these videos. I live in berlin and every time you stream it’s in the middle of the night for me.
I honestly can't trust the user score because, unless it's the most harmless thing in existence, there will always be someone that goes on a crusade for or against a movie\game.
I still remember when TLOU2 and GOT fans went at war with each other because they both wanted their game to be "game of the year".
User scores are spam and garbage. Never to be trusted
And the actual Game of the Year that year was Hades.
Last of Us 2 is definitely not game of the year sure it had amazing graphics, gameplay, and voice acting but the plot and character development were not good compared to the 1st one but if people enjoy it I understand why they may like it more than me
"I so wanted horror, but ended up with a borer" made me think of Gene Shalit more than Dr. Seuss. Really, a winner either way.
Cosmonaut is scared of Eric taking his job, as he should be. I could watch Eric talking about movies for hours. What a man.
What a man you are*
Fixed it for you there, you're welcome.
Lol
I feel bad that I can never catch your streams, so PLEASE make some more highlights on youtube. I love them.
I've always enjoyed hearing your input and thinking behind everything, this was no different. I'd definitely like to see more content like this.
“Another Jared Leto masterpiece. Haven’t seen it btw” got me
Armand White is the perfect contrarian reviewer.
Bro, putting the jet set radio music on during the sponsor, AND you're a guitarist? Didn't know, mad new respect for you dude. What's your gear?
not even half way through the video and im loving it already. i feel like people take it way too seriously when watching marcus's videos

other people: “the last jedi is bad!”
Marcus: “the last jedi is both good and bad and i think that’s fine.”

The Last Jedi is the greatest, divisive, film of all time.😂

TLJ is so hard because when it’s good, it’s very good (Praetorian fight, Rey and Kylo moments). But when it’s bad, it’s fucking awful (Canto Bight, literally anything to do with the Resistance side of the story). Honestly it’s not great, but not awful imo

Awesome video, would love to see more of these !
I just had the worst "what was the point of that anyway" with my family after everything everywhere all at once. I really liked it but they just went on and on about how long it was for a "basic" plot. So I can definitely sympathize with hating being around people like that.
i can’t imagine walking out of that movie feeling that
My boyfriend didn't like how long it was but it didn't feel all that long to me. It was such a good movie.
My buddy said the same for the Batman he didn’t understand it at all
Encanto as well. I’ve heard people say it’s not great because ‘it doesn’t have a plot and it’s just a family in a house’.
Pretty much everyone I have met and talked about Star Wars with though the Sequel trilogy was just okay or to down right terrible. lol
It’s ok to have your opinion but if your family feels the need to call you that you’re probably being mad annoying abt it lmao, let people enjoy shit
Can Star Wars fans just admit the movies are and always will be terrible, their hasn’t been a good one since the 80’s just let it go and stop acting like it matters at all.
@@ceptic6710 no no see cause that's my attitude its just if i make any criticism about a movie they like the write off as me just being an edgy hipster immediately i don't have a problem with my old man loving star wars ( i didnt even hate it just didnt think it was a masterpiece or anything like that) but i do have a problem trying to force me to love something just because he does if that makes sense?
@@ceptic6710 Also I know for a fact im not being mad annoying about they ask for my opinion and i give it if thats annoying than damn i guess ill never share my opinion when asked :P
This is by far one of your best videos. Keep it up cosmonaut !!
From all the TH-cam reviewers Marcus usually tends to be the one that I agree with the most.
Agreed.
Superhero movies - Cosmonaut
Other movies - Critical drinker
All movies - Jeremy jahns

FWIW I never once thought you were just being contrarian. I wouldn’t subscribe to your channel if the content did not have value and I think your content is worth my time.

Don't comment then
Stepping outside the cycle of "this new thing is excellent and beyond critique" turning to "the thing is a couple months old now and overrated and people who really like it are worthy of scorn" is probably more than enough for people on the internet to start calling you a contrarian.
