Fair play to anyone who rides this in a day. It's a massive undertaking and just relentless. I've been on about doing it for about 25 years and finally did it in Aug 2020. Bikepacked it so did it in 3 days. Alot of the hills were impossible with the extra weight of the camping gear.
mad respect! I tried it this year. Left Winchester at 08:30 and made it as far as South-Sea before deciding to call it. Had dinner and rode the rest of it on the roads (did not want to de not he trails in the dark) before arriving at Eastbourne around 22:30 at night.
Well Done!! Myself and my friend just finished walking it about 2 weeks ago now for charity, and it was honestly the hardest thing I've ever done. Hats off to you mate x
Charlee Hissey thanks! I agree, it was definitely the hardest thing I've done also. Well done on your walk, a very good charity you supported. You're video was great.
Mate, huge respect to you (you did solo too, right) a friend is trying to get me to do this next year. I did the Century to the Stones this year which was 100k and that was pretty tough plus we had every weather condition thrown at us apart from snow which didn't help. Made the chalky stuff very dodgy to ride on the decents! It looked like you had a great day for it. Apparently the climbs get steadily longer/harder the further into the ride you get? Anyway well done you an amazing effort!
Thanks mate. You should definitely do it. It's a great day out. I'm doing it again next year around mid June, to get the longest daylight for riding. Century to the Stones looks great, may have to try that one. yep, i did SDW solo, but you're always passing walkers/riders on the trails so not too lonely. Did a couple of 50 milers earlier in the year with friends which is much more fun. The weather really made the day great (the chalky sections are like ice in the wet), and to be truthful I'm not massively fit, but the sun and views made the distance feel more than bearable. Yeah, you're right, the hills to get harder the closer to Eastbourne you get from Winchester, the thought of getting close to the finish makes the climbs easier though. From Winchester to Amberley is quite rolling climbs. Amberley onward gets a little harder, but the scenery is nicer with the coastal views. All the best for your SDW 2018
1. do it on a dry day 2. take plenty of water and use the taps along the way 3. eat little and often, as you burn a ton of calories 4. enjoy it, a great day out
Dave James - take plenty of food (sugar and savoury) as you burn a lot of calories and you don’t want to lose energy. - use every water tap you can to refill your bottles/camel bak - I listed the water taps on my website www.overthedowns.com - chamois cream is handy to avoid pain down there - the trail is well signposted but keep an eye out north of Brighton as there is a sharp right turn that is easy to miss and you will end up heading straight on instead. - if you’re doing it solo (unsupported) a small 1st aid kit and battery pack for your mobile.
Hi Here’s a Garmin link to the SDW ride I did this year connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/5222277480 Also I put some info here www.overthedowns.com Hope this helps 👍
Lewis yes there’s plenty of official campsites along the route. There’s one near Amberley called High Titten that’s basically a grassed area you can just turn up and camp for free but has no facilities etc.
Andyb2379 hi. On this ride I used a mountain bike with front suspension. But this year rode the same route on a full suspension bike and was much comfier.
Good video. I like your choice of soundtrack too. I did the SDW just over a week ago in 3 days at a more leisurely pace. Seeing you do it in a day makes me feel lame now! You can watch the vid over on my channel if your interested!

Well done for doing it. I’ve been wanting to bike pack this year some time. Maybe on the king Alfred way or the south Downs Way.

What sort of bike did you use for this mission?

Fantastic effort, you are a great cyclist to do that in a day.
Thanks mate. Not so much a great cyclist, just a little determined.
@@RussellMead I’m really hoping to do this next summer but will be two days I hope.

Beautiful song, I wish Mozart was alive to hear it
