None of these guys are completely for the special olympics it takes great mental and physical capabilities to achieve this goal (competing in nationals) for this event.
I was watching and had to check the distance for myself. When I realized it was a mile I calculated they were feeling as though they were expending more energy than actually racing the mile. Cutting your stride purposefully isn't easy to do or maintain for long distances. Requires way more maintenance and control, and probably felt like they were racing a 2 mile tbh. Kudos to these young men.
