    Respectfully as a born and bred Londoner, these prices are delusional and ridiculous! They know who they're targeting, not one of these were worth more than £1800 especially not in Hackney of all places, just 10 years ago these flats were £1000 a month. There's no reason it should more than double in that time, except for persons who are duped by "locations" when 15yrs ago these areas were literally the ghetto of London!

      The rooms and windows all look so small and she's saying they're spacious! Flats have been subdivided since I rented in London. I had crummy places, but they were a reasonable size and in Queens Park and maida Vale.

      Don’t see why people have a problem with market rent. The market is different from a decade ago. There is a well documented housing shortage. If there are renters willing to pay the asked rent, why would the landlords be considered greedy and disgraceful? This attitude is really baffling.

    30 years ago I lived in London and had 1 bedroom apartment in a beautiful historic house that was split into 1/2 beds apartments and it was £600 a month, which was on the higher end for a rental. It was beautiful but I moved out of London when I started a family and bought a bigger house.
    My best friend still lives in London, she bought a Victorian terraced house on one wage. Crazy how expensive it is now, even her children can’t afford to leave home and I’m just talking about renting, forget buying!

    the sole reason these prices are so ridiculous and quite frankly pathetic is because idiots keep paying them..... how a normal every day person or persons are to afford anywhere to live on a regular job/income is beyond me... no wonder we have a housing crisis.... nothing but pure greed and profiteering .....

    • @bamccabe1

      Here in the USA when the government builds affordable housing a lot of the time it's really shoddy. I think the better solution is to rehab existing buildings (with good bones), revitalize maybe formerly industrial locations that have been abandoned.

    The place you visited where someone was letting the room out through airbnb - I didn't even realise that was allowed for a rented flat? I'm torn myself at the moment as reaching the age (52) that I need to get back on property ladder after 3 year hiatus off it, and also the appeal to buy and let out the spare room is a big thing, so I'm surprised to hear that people are doing it through rentals anyway. I totally get where you're coming from with choosing to use that extra £500 for travel..... is absolutely the reason I would rent out a spare room..... ! to be London based, but travel lots is living the dream. Apologies for long message, loved the vlog.... and saw your previous one when you were flat hunting last time

    Lifelong Londoner here. It's absolutely wild to me how much rents have skyrocketed. Of course the gentrification of working class areas plays a massive part, as does decades of failure to build enough homes for people (affordable ones, anyway - 'luxury' apartment buildings everywhere, and shared ownership schemes in poorly made apartments with rising service charges, leaving people trapped unable to afford or sell them - and a massive lack of social housing...) but also it's just indicative of how exploitative the housing market is as a whole. £2500 for a 2 bedroom flat! Lawd. Landlords are taking people for a ride.
    Glad you got to stay in a flat you already like, anyway!

    • @vonder7
      @vonder7 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s not landlords, if you buy that flat the monthly mortgage is going to be even more.

    • @yogajaxx8299
      @yogajaxx8299 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Lifelong Londoner here too and I agree. It's obscene how greedy landlords and greedy letting agents are taking advantage of the housing crisis. They must look at us and see 'mug' on our forehead - and we know it, but have no choice. And the whole leasehold system for purchasing is just horrendous. I'm glad it's becoming more widely known about now as it needs to be abolished. The whole housing system needs some drastic action to cool it down but no government will do it.

    • @vonder7
      @vonder7 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@yogajaxx8299 it’s not greedy landlords, actually it costs more to buy a property than renting it, landlords also pay very high taxes. I was looking into that and it seems that I would be losing money if I bought and rented out a property. It’s the fact that there are not enough properties and England is the most densely populated country in Europe. It can feel like they are ripping you off but then why don’t you buy a property instead of renting it?

    At theses ridiculous prices, the day will come when most people will be moving into van life, tiny owned homes or narrow boats or even tents on the street. The rules and regulations are making the rental market increasingly prohibited for both tenants and land land lords.

    I've seen a lot of those listings or been around where those listings are. I pay 1k for one room in a 4 bedroom flat on a council estate in hackney. The size is okay but it still holds the council house infrastructure and vibration. There is an inefficiency when it comes to living in council houses.. I hope not to have to pay 1k after this lease is up to live in another council building..

    I liked #3 and #6. I'm curious about what is considered spacious. A number of the ones you said were spacious were 500 to 600 square foot range. That seemed smallish to me. I used to live in a one bedroom that was 850 square foot here in Washington, DC and my current two bedroom is 1,200 square feet. I'm thinking that in London the range of square footage must be relatively smaller.

    • @georgiadoust

    It strikes me that the UK is the reverse of the US. In the UK everything outside the flat looks old, and everything inside the flat is modern. In the US, the world outside looks modern but inside, we love our antiques and distressed cabinetry and floors, etc!

    • @karenglenn6707

      As an Aussie, I much prefer the style of flats in the UK. Often with the cutest little heritage details. Many old buildings in the UK, which I love, have just so much character and funny little quirks around every corner. And to be honest, the history of Australia and the US is virtually non existent compared to the UK and Europe with its stunning old buildings. ❤

    Gosh. You are being robbed that is for sure just because you want to live near central London? When I lived in South London and owned my own flat, my commute to central London from East Dulwich (my office was in Grosvenor Square at that time) took me 1.5 hours each way on the bus. Then my office moved to Chancery Lane so I could walk to the station where I got the train to High Holborn. My journey came down to about 40 min.
    These areas you are looking at can be really rough, though they have been "gentrified" in later years (where we lived in East Dulwich has been gentrified too) We eventually moved out of London down to the south west where we bought a house for less than the amount we sold our flat for. We both kept doing the same jobs we had done in London, except my commute was 15 mins and my husband's was 25 mins.
    When you are young, living in London seems really important for various reasons. But other cities have just as much going on, and have cheaper accommodation. My parents had moved from South London down to the south coast when I was at school. I could not wait to get back to London and did so when I was 24. By the time I was 26 I had bought my own flat. For me, London was everything and I could never envisage wanting to leave it again. Six years later I was really ready to leave. I had bought my flat while I was still single, then got married and wanted to get out and leave that rat race behind because I realised that London wasn't everything and I could live a much better life elsewhere. My husband and I carried on doing the same work, except down on the Southwest Coast. Note: Flats number 3 or number 10 were the best and I think you should have really thought hard about either of those.
