In today's video we're sharing some gorgeous places we visited in Germany and along the way, we experienced some reverse culture shocks that having living in Britain for 7 years now just kicked in. We love both countries and although they aren't that far apart, there are some massive culture difference. Hope you enjoy! Kirsten & Jörg xx

I like the idea of stores closed on Sundays. It was like this when I was a child growing up in Virginia. The days were spent with family, resting and relaxing in preparation for the week ahead. Perhaps this would be beneficial in today’s nonstop world. Great video, as always!
Our country, USA, is so new compared to Europe. The buildings are what we here, call 'storybook' buildings with all the strips of wood decorating the outside and such. We do not see those style buildings in America anywhere except in books.

We have that architecture in New England where I'm from. Our houses have the original stars on them denoting their origin from the 18th and 19th centuries.

I love the building architecture in the towns on your German visits. The pastries look divine - I would be big as a house if I lived there ! For info, the UK shops also used to close half-day Wednesday and all day Sunday until law was changed in early 90's.
Another lovely video for us to see and experience your country. It made me smile when you said the shops were closed on Wednesday afternoon in Germany, because we used to have ‘early closing day’ which was a Wednesday, in England. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Kirsten, you brought me down Memory Lane with the Haribo Happy Cola. When I was a young child my friends and I would buy our sweets in the local corner shop, and these were great favourites, we called them Cola Bottles. Lots of love from Dublin, Ireland.💖🇮🇪

I loved the turtle sculpture on the fountain and that quirky carving on the building corner of the man making a silly face by sticking his tongue out. Here too (US) the days of quiet Sundays and a hush over businesses are long gone with most things being open and usually very busy - nice to see that Germany still observes one day for a slower pace. I loved living in Germany it’s so beautiful there! My oldest daughter was born in Nurnberg 40 years ago. I lived in Frankfurt, Hanau as a child and as an adult I lived in Nurnberg and Weisbaden. I cried when I left in 1992. I hope one day I will come back to Germany. I loved walking into the small towns and shopping at all the markets. I miss the delicious food and the people and culture. ❤️

I lived in Reiderich in high school and attended school there. I have a photo of my German parents and my mom in front of the beautiful fountain in Bad Urach from 1994! Seeing Schwabia brought back so many sweet teenage memories! Happy New Year to both of you!

Each time we drive from Munich to Tübingen, we drive the beautiful route over the Swabian Alb and of course, through Bad Urach. I drive this route since 44 years. 🤗🤗🤗

I remember Trier and visiting the Euroshop. I didn't realise it was Karl Marx house. Very interesting. I love visiting Germany. Happy New Year
Germany is so beautiful. Having spent time in the Schwarzwald, I will never forget the beautiful red geraniums everywhere, even on the bridges. And the people were so friendly.🌷

I grew up in the 1950’s and 60’s and shops always closed here in Uk on Wednesday afternoon and it was unheard of shops being opened on a Sunday.
I think it changed in 1994 .
Love that old world look & history. The architecture is magnificent. I was raised in NY state in the 1950s when things were closed on Sundays. It's the Lord's day of rest & I wish we could bring that back again. A day for rest, time with God & family.

Hi England used tobe exactly the same everywhere closed on a Sunday. When I was growing up the shops always closed on a Wednesday afternoon. In some villages they still do!! Happy new year to you both, enjoy your videos very much.
Lovely towns to stop for a wander and coffee and cake. Trier and Bad Urach are so well-kept….from here, the buildings look as new as the day they were built!

Hi, Love your videos! in the UK up until the end of the 1970's every wednesday afternoon and all day sunday the shops were always closed! i was brought up with that....now people panic if shops shut just Christmas day they all panic buy like shops are shutting for a month!!!
I know, it can be far too much! We are always so shocked when shops are open on Boxing Day etc. It's also good to have a rest and just plan ahead.
Trier is one of many places in Germany that I have wanted to visit again. Thank you for the wonderful trip down memory lane and may many blessings flow abundantly to you both and your families this New Year!

I especially recall my father & his brother always talking about the beautiful country, mountains, & towns which created their home. Of course, my Father, Grandmother, & Great Grandfather spoke German. My Father told me about the wonderful buildings & homes saying no others compared. The people & families were very close & worked to help each other...everyone was wise & smart. During the early 1800s German immigrants came to the USA, worked hard, struggling for success with land purchases where the land was difficult to manage but priced at good low cost. My family members at that time harvested trees from the steep mountains & created timber beam businesses for coal mines, & those timber & sawmill companies grew well. My early German family members on my Father's side...plus the early Scotch-Irish family members on my Mother's side came to the USA with nothing & did well. Their lives speak of the strengths & gifted minds of both Germans & Scotch-Irish. ...Around 1957 my Father rejoined his comrades (very close friends) to visit towns & find family & friends after the war. The world was changing, but the homeland spirit remained strong & still exists as a rich spirit of people today. ...Kirsten & Joerg, may all the days of this new year be filled with happiness & satisfaction & happy journeys to explore & share. ...This Video Is Wonderful!!!
I noticed how much I didn’t see of Germany even I lived there up to the age of 35. Now I’m almost 14 years in England and think I wouldn’t fit in anymore in Germany.

I loved New Year's Eve in Germany, Silvesternacht. I remember in Wiesbaden they had huge celebrations with tons of fireworks. The next day, you'd walk downtown and see all the little wires from the rocket style fireworks, but then to walk again downtown the day after that, clean as a whistle. I had also forgotten about Wednesdays...but being excited when November came and not only were shops open on Wednesday, but had later shopping hours, too, until Christmas...and of course, the Christmas Markets. As I do every New Year, I think fondly of Wiesbaden because we married there on 2/2. 35 years soon! Hard to believe.
What a funny thing. This year we visited so many places, that you visited too. Howardian Hills, York and now Trier. We missed you only for one day😂. On the 2nd January the Porta Nigra was open and the view was stunning. We even had a hot chocolate too in that Café.

Here in Scotland in days gone by every town had a half day closing for shops. In some towns it would maybe be a Wednesday but in others it could be a Tuesday or, another day. The practice started to die out in larger towns in the 80's and by the 90s it only happened in smaller towns and villages. Now there's no half day closing anywhere that I know of in Scotland.
When I was a child if it was half day closing in our town (which if I remember correctly was a Wednesday) if mother wanted to go shopping we would have an afternoon out to a neighbouring town. Mother knew which day was half closing in every town within miles!

When I was in Germany- I always love to hear those bells sounding off. We don't have that sort of thing in the states. The streets were so clean, and the forests were beautiful. I had the cnace to go Volksmarching and I would bring the dogs. I just loved it but I love the outdoors anyway I can get it. When I was there all of those years ago, I never could find colored curtains
Great videos which I love watching and I think that your house is looking very cosey. The room you call your snug, looks extremely cosy. Kirsten I remember the shops in the UK closed on one afternoon on a weekday. This was many years ago There was a shops act of 1911 and this required that shops closed for one half day per week. Of course remember the shops did not open at all on Sundays, except paper shops, I believe in the UK. I wish you both a Happy New Year and look forward to watching more very interesting videos.
My uncle and his family lived in Munich and Frankfurt for many years. In the early 1950’s they sent my brother and I lederhosens ( don’t know if I am pronouncing or spelling them properly. Mine was a heavy suede jumper skirt and my brother’s were shorts. They also sent us hats with a plume of feathers from the hatband. I think I am remembering this correctly, I was only about 5 and am now 73! I love the beautiful villages and I’m glad you spent time with your family. It’s rejuvenating to spend time with your parents but it’s so sad to leave them. Happy healthy New Year to you and your loved ones 🥰

Lovely video . Many years ago we we also used to shut Wednesday afternoon and all day Sunday in the UK . Sunday used to be a lovely calm day it’s very hectic now . I loved watching you have coffee and cake it brings back memories of when I worked in a bakers shop in Germany the bread and cakes are amazing in Germany in fact when I used to go back to visit my mum and dad in the UK I used to always bring him a loaf of German bread because he loved it .

Shops closing on a Wednesday afternoon in England was normal when I was growing up certainly up to and including the 70s. Also a lot of shops closed all day Monday. Definitely no shopping on a Sunday. Most shops were closed by 5pm the rest of the week. I find some small independent shops still choose a Monday or Wednesday to close if they are open less hours. I agree with you. Sunday was like a different day to the rest of the week. Quiet and relaxing. I really miss that.
In the US our stores are open 7 days a week but that was not the case when I was growing up (I will be 74 years old next month). Store were always CLOSED on Sunday. I liked that lifestyle much better than all the hustle and bustle of now days. Things moved at such a much slower pace.
We are always a bit shocked when shops in the UK are open on Boxing Day and people go crazy. It's good to enjoy Christmas and family without shopping we think.

It’s so cool to hear dialect changes auf Deutsch that we don’t typically learn in German class in high school. 😃🗣🇩🇪 My husband is from a prefecture in the southern part of Japan and I remember riding in a taxi the first time to his family’s house and the chatter on the taxi CB was so difficult for me to understand, as someone who studied “Tokyo-ben” aka standard Japanese. I was thinking, “Is this Japanese?” 😂🇯🇵🤔 FYI - lots of shops in Japan are closed on Mondays for anyone that travels there. Anywhooo, so looking forward to your vlogs for 2023. Yes, a lot of hairdressers are still closed on a Monday in Germany so it's interesting to hear about Japan.
Loved watching your video while we are waiting to board our flight to fly back to Germany! We visited Trier last summer and it was very nice. The shops in our village in southern Bavaria also close on Wednesday midday and often close between 12:30 and 2. It can be so tricky to get used to, but I love how the employees all get breaks. Thank you so much Sara - I hope you had a wonderful time with your family in the US! I know, it's the same in the village I come from and also where Jörg is from. We're no longer used to the Wednesday afternoons but would love a quiet Sunday in the UK just to get the feeling that it's different and more peaceful. I think a lot of people could use it to switch off which has almost become impossible in our world.

We have dear friends in Ulm that we visit a couple times each year, Rosie and Wolfie. Well, Rosie was born and raised in Ehingen. Her family had a bakery there for several generations. It’s an area we love! Can’t wait to be there in May!
