I clicked like on this before the comercials started and wrote this before they were over. 😁 ❤ Aaaand, I am a keyboard player and I take your lessons to heart and translate them to the keyboard. So, thank you Sir!
Just saw Steve and the Dregs 3 days ago for the first time. He, along with the rest of the bands, are simply unbelievable players. Jordan Rudess was on keys, too.
Man, this is ever so timely! I wore out Steve Morse's Power Lines REH VHS tape, I actually still have it. AND, just saw the Steve Morse Band open for the Dixie Dregs two days ago at the Warner Theater in DC. I almost cried when they started playing When Night Meets Light. Saw Steve Vai and Joe Satriani at the same theater just a few weeks ago, and Steve Morse is still the king of the mountain. He crushed it so hard.
Great lesson! For those who want to take it even one step further, do the same thing with major and minor 7 chords. Just raise the 3 and the 7 up on octave, works really well on the strings Dave uses on set #2. Lets's say Em7, that would be string A position 7 and then D-9, B-8 and (high) E-10 etc.. Majorshapes are trickier then minorshapes, so instead of for instance Cmaj7, try (low) E-8, D-5, G-9, (high) E-7 instead of C-3, G-5, B-5, (high) E-7. But again, cool lesson!
Thanks David!🥰 Steve Morse has been one of my favorites since high school as well. _Endless Waves_ was one of the hardest tunes I ever learned, and a really beautiful piece of music.😊
I learned that, too, and yeah it was tough. I had given up about midway, then I got my Roland guitar synth, and I got very motivated to hear me play it with the guitar and the unison piano part, so I dug in. I have bad ADHD, so I needed the motivation. It was one of the most satisfying musical experiences.
Thanks David, loving this one. I was raised in Miami, and followed Steve with the drags etc. All the way through the years. Met him a couple of times with the Steve Morse band, and he is the sweetest coolest guy you'd ever want to meet. He just sat with us and talked for about 30 minutes both times. Cheers.
This was a great David thank you. I would love for you to do more lessons in this kind of vein where you teach more the concept rather than a specific lick or set of licks. I love those videos too but I think learning these kind of things in the long term are way more useful, versatile and challenging. This video will definitely keep my busy for the next few months.
Excellent video! Perfect timing too, as I've been working in the CAGED approach and goofing around with the root/octaves for chord inversions... Now I'll work on moving around the 3rd within that CAGED concept-- every little bit helps :D
Steve does a really cool repeating open-voiced arpeggio thing on the outro of his song Conversation Piece from the Dreg's Industry Standard album. It uses major and minor arps as well as major inversions. It's in C, starting on the low E with a C maj 1st inversion (E, C, G) and ends on Gmaj 1st inversion (B, G, D) on the 4th, 3rd, and 1st strings, so it walks up and then loops back to the beginning. It's one of my favorite Dregs tunes, with Mark O'Connor on violin and the most gorgeous synth solo I've ever heard T. Lavitz play.
Hey man thank you for doing these, my son was in the NICU for 2 months and these videos helped a lot. I know you normal don’t do lessons but would you be able to do little fighter by white lion. The tabs aren’t that good

Steve Morse is, imo, the greatest guitarist working today. I really appreciate you giving him the spotlight as much as you have.

Excellent suggestion! Thank you.
Fantastic lesson. Such a signature of Steve's melodic playing. Simple to understand but not so simple to master in my opinion.
Your playing is one of the cleanest Ive ever seen.
Crazy and very cool lesson !! I am going to have to incorporate this into my playing !! Thank you , Dave !!

The up and down exercise is very challenging. Thanks for sharing.

Another tool into my utility belt. Thanks!
You’re remarkable. Every time I watch a lesson I learn more about the depth of my ignorance
Very cool lesson 👍🏻🙏
Great stuff David! I just saw Morse and the Dregs play on Long Island. Fantastic show and very inspiring
Thanks Dave!
Absolutely brilliant lesson!
enjoy your vids man, keep up the good work

Thanks Dave. I really appreciate how you explained the “open voicing”. Sorry, but I will borrow your “slip ‘n slide” licks too - cheers.

Very very cool❤
Next step, work those open arpeggios out for the two other inversions. Gives you a ton of arranging options. Good video. Love the open arpeggios.
Again. Let’s go.
My wrist hurts just listening to Air on a 6 String

Could you do a breakdown of Modoc?
What about REVERSALS ☝️
Navigating the string skip… 😖
