  • For over a century, drummers have been turning to a variety of percussive traditions as prompts for the creation of new expressive possibilities on the drumset. This talk will offer an overview of developmental processes and extended techniques one can explore in order to create an improvisational language for the drumset, in this case emerging in response to Korean rhythm/sticking cells, aesthetic conceptions, and rhythmic forms.
Simon Barker lectures in jazz studies at the SCM. In addition to his solo performances and recordings, Simon co-leads several internationally recognised collaborative ensembles including Chiri, Showa 44 and Band of Five Names. Simon also performs with many of Australia’s most established ensembles including the Matt McMahon trio, the Phil Slater quartet and several groups led by Scott Tinkler.

Simon was one of my teachers many years ago when he came to Korea a lot. I always appreciated his passion, intelligence, dilligence, humor, and humbleness. Thanks for bringing this great lecture of him.

A latecomer to this - quite cool. Never gave Korean music that much thought. Going to dig into this much more. THx Simon!
