I had trouble with insomnia and anxiety for about 2 weeks. I tried sleeping pills, tea, and working out before sleeping. Nothing worked because my mind kept thinking and running off to different thoughts. I tried this technique for the first time last night and it worked! The most impressive thing was that every night I would wake up at 2 in the morning and not able to sleep again. Well I didn't wake up at 2 and I slept all night! Thanks!

just remember that whenever you are anxious, sad, or worried. This works with anxiety and depression. Not just sleep. Always do the breathing technique but in 4 cycles. Do not do 2 or 3. 4 cycles is the one that removes my anxiety and lets me calm down and not think too much on negative thoughts. If 4 cycles doesn't work then start doing 5 cycles because everyone is different. Anxiety and anti depressants don't work on me. This breathing technique was the only thing that worked for this past year. I wish you the best of luck and remember that this anxiety is only temporary part of your life. You'll be stronger and happier once this is all over.

All jokes aside I typically go to bed at 11:30 and fall asleep sometime around 2:30, but after doing three cycles of this I fell asleep like easily. Never even got to look at my phone, but I'd guess I was asleep somewhere between five and ten minutes after doing this technique, and I was able to wake up at a good time and feel great.

I learned this 4-7-8 breathing technique a long time ago when I was just beginning to learn about relaxation and meditation. However, for whatever reason, I stopped doing it. Here I am relearning it because of reading Breath and wanting to get the technique perfected. I used to have insomnia and this technique helped way back when. Now I'm having breathing issues and allergies that are keeping me awake at night. Thank you for this video.

Whether one calls this "breath work", "breath control", "Pranayama", or "controlled breathing" it is all the same: Regulating your breathing for a specific outcome which is always positive, beneficial and therapeutic. I see great value in Dr. Weil's technique and as a certified, clinical hypnotherapist and reiki practitioner, I will not only use this myself, but start each session out by explaining this easy process, and have my clients follow along with me. I believe this will be a quick and beneficial approach to quickly enrich their system with oxygen and relax them. What a perfect way to begin. Thank you Dr. Weil.

An absolutely brilliant technique that really works. I used it myself and have taught it to others. It may take a week or two of persevering to really get it and retrain your mind but it's worth it.
One young lad I taught it to was lying awake every night until 3 or 4 in the morning with a ton of shit going through his head and he was suffering from anxiety attacks and had anger issues. He wasn't getting more than a couple hours sleep at a time of at all and during the day he was having anxiety attacks and when certain buttons were pushed he got very angry and sometimes violent or destructive.
After a couple weeks of using this technique he was putting himself to sleep with little or no problem, sleeping for longer and waking feeling more positive. Every time he felt anxious or angry during the day he would take some breaths using this technique and immediately calm himself down.
This really works, so if you suffer from sleep issues, anxiety, stress or anger it is certainly worth giving it a go, but don't expect immediate results on the first night or incident, stick with it for a couple weeks 😁🙏💕

I have medication now, metoprolol and it helps keep my hart calm. I also used oxazepam wich you can't keep using as it stops working after a while. It's a miracle medicine, it works extremely well, damn shame you can't keep using it. Most of the time it's nothing really, it's usually in your head wich is my problem. I keep thinking and listening to my heart and slowly begin to panic. Just go to bed with a clear mind, don't think about bad things and think about good things. I know it's extremely hard, at the end it gets better.

It's really not a sleep thing man. It's sort of about finding a balance between your conscious actions, and your subconscious actions. While the 4-7-8 breathing doesn't really help you fall asleep (yeah I know its a joke and everything) following it with your own breathing / counting pattern (it could be half second counts, could be 2 second counts) really helps you to relax and take a step back from what's bugging you. Regardless of whether its psychological, or physical. It helps your focus a lot, and if you're having sleep problems, its fucking magical.

Holy cow! It really works! I have terrible panic attacks and this really helped. I mean, it didnt completely go away but it brought it to a point in which I could control and tolerate it. Thanks. One down side is it made me hyper aware of my heart beat which of course was pounding due to the panic and I could feel it much more clearly due to the fact that my lungs were mostly filled but aside from that. It's just anything I can feel phsyiologically speaking makes my paniced mind question if its normal or not and what it means if it isn't. "Ah my heart is beating, that must mean I'm having a heart attack!" That sort of ridiculous nonsense that seems totally feasible when you are panicing but utterly nonsensical when you are calm. Talking (or typing) about it also really helps.

I have more clarity, I can dissociate from feelings and notions and just watch them in the present moment as they pass by. My blood pressure is lower, I can sing better lol definitely a bonus for singers and vocalists. You feel over all "woke".

Its basically disabling the fight or flight state(SNS) and entering the rest/digest state (PSNS) by slowing down your breathing -> slowed heart rate -> relaxation. Just dont overdo the holding breath part in the beginning because once oxygen is too low you might enter the fight or flight state(SNS).
